CoachJoyce reacted to samaj in 2022 ADIDAS MIDWEST SCHOLASTIC DUALS - DISCUSSION
There is a new summer tournament on the block and it's the real deal!!  The event information is listed in the Tournament Information Forum, where it should be.  I am hoping Joe leaves this post here as it becomes a discussion.

After many years of consideration and thought of trying to make this event happen, We finally jumped in feet first and made it a reality.  We contacted Adidas Wrestling and they jumped at the chance to be the title sponsor of this new event.  I am wondering what everyone's thoughts are.  This event strives to much more than a typical high school hosted Summer Duals. (You know, the summer events that unorganized teams verbally commit to and then cancel 2 weeks prior to the event, leaving the host school with the mess filling the spot and everything that goes with it.)

We want an event that is full every single year, with great programs, who show up ready to compete at a high level.  We want a waiting list of hammer teams.  We want an event, that quite honestly, is not for everybody.  This event has been "copied" after the Disney Duals.  We want it to be a smaller version of the Disney Duals, right here in Indiana.  We had a "soft opening" so that we could reach out to specific programs and get a wide representation state wide.  We also reached out to other states hoping to get a much different flavor, but have had little or no luck.

We have had some outstanding programs commit for this year. (see the list below) and we still have a few openings.  This should be a great event.  So tell us, what can we do to make it grow from 16 to 36 teams from all over the Midwest in the next 2-3 years?  What are the little things that make an event like this something everyone wants to do?  What separates an event like this from the others?  Talk to us.  Help us make this something Indiana can be proud of.

Here are the teams entered so far-

He brings a wealth of knowledge and was an absolute destroyer on his feet in college. Outstanding guy to learn from!

I have had the opportunity to coach at a small school (North Montgomery), where we had a great run, and now at a big school (Center Grove). In my experience, I would say the biggest difference is small schools deal with a lot of multi-sport athletes with wrestling being their 2nd-3rd favorite sport. Once we were able to get our guys to commit to some offseason training we saw our results get better and better. I would say we did the majority of our offseason training in our wrestling room, we had a couple guys that traveled to academies (no academies within 90 mins) but not nearly as many as we have at Center Grove (two major academies within 30 mins). I do think that if we had an academy close to North Montgomery we would have had many more athletes taking advantage of that opportunity. Also, the classed team state tournament was a big help as well as far as getting kids to come out for the sport. The publicity of being "ranked" high as a team each year allowed kids to believe that there was a championship as a team that we could realistically win. This helped us pick up some of the better athletes and also convinced our guys that putting in some offseason training was important. As far as the individual tournament not being classed, I do not think that affected our success in a negative way. In my opinion, the key is getting the kids involved in wrestling early and hoping that wrestling turns into their top sport. There is no secret that the majority of the individual state placers start wrestling as elementary/middle schoolers and put in a fair amount of offseason training. For small schools, the earlier you can get kids involved and enjoying the sport, the more success you will have. That is easier said than done though as it is easier to be the "top" athlete at your school in the popular sports in elementary/middle school at small schools than at a big school.

My opinion based on my observations - Academies are not some secret ingredient to that sausage.   Don’t let anyone tell you it is.  The secret ingredient is the extra practice outside of regular school practice.  Working on technic in small groups.  Getting better at your craft. This can be done by your school or club coaches.  Take Drake Buchanan. Started wrestling in elementary school. Between Contenders, CIA and Red Cobra he has attended less than 25 sessions in all those years. Most of those being practices for Duals teams he was asked to be on.  It was the HS and club coaches spending time with Drake and 2-3 of his teammates in small groups teaching new technics and breaking back habits.  Over and over and over again.   Did you know Drake is a righty?  Where did that wicked left leg lead and attack come from. It came from a HS coach seeing that he was able to attack to the left and a summer of “Do it again!  Do it again!  Hand cupped! Move it down! Again!” After the “Summer of love”. Drake went into 8th grade with a left leg lead.  That is impact.  The extra time in small groups.  A room packed with kids and 2-3 coaches can’t make that impact.  You don’t need “Great” wrestling partners every day. No question it helps.   You can to go live at a live night or a tournament to see what works and what needs fixed.  Then spend the time fixing it.  Why go to another all day Saturday open when you would improve more with 2 hours of technic training.  Sure it helps to have “Great” partners.  Lots of things help.  But doing something wrong over and over again against a “Great” partner doesn’t make it better.  Now I admit, getting the coach and the 2-3 other wrestling partners that want to get better is another conversation.  But it is the time spent on technic, actively getting better that is the key to improving.    As I said In my opinion.

It's the second worst part of coaching.  The first is saying goodbye to your athletes.  Whether is to graduation, quitting, or worse, saying goodbye is never easy.  I'm a mess every awards banquet.

You'll feel even worse not coaching those kids and being in even less control than you are now. As coach you have only so much control, but you do have control. As you gain experience coaching, the nerves don't go away, but your ability to handle them increases.

You may not remember feeling a ton of nerves as a competitor, but you are probably remembering the end of your competition career; what if you thought back to the beginning? Would there be a difference in the nerves you felt from the beginning to the end? The same can be true of your coaching nerves.

Totally normal. I think not having total control, like when you were a wrestler, makes it nerve racking as a coach. We want them to reach goals they've worked for and feel helpless sitting in the corner watching. No matter how hard we work to prepare them and train them, ultimately, they have to go perform and some do, but some don't.

Like anything else, it's about framing it for me. You will always question whether you did enough to prepare a kid when they fall short of their wrestling goal, but rely on the fact that you have instilled in them many life skills, including the very tough lesson that hard work and effort does not always equal reaching your goals--just the opportunity to achieve those goals.

That's what gets me through these next two weeks. Have to know that regardless of how many medals we win as a team, the seniors that leave are better off for having wrestled and will be better young men and women because of it.

I feel like the NFHS really hit the nail on the head with the questions this year.  I really think these could be positive changes to high school wrestling.  To summarize the some of the questions

Q3) 6 matches allowed per day in a regular season tournament.

Q4) Nearfall to match college style, 2 points for a 2 count, 4 points for a 4 count.

Q5) Having a visual count for stalling when wrestlers are on their feet.

Q6) Out of bound rule to only having one supporting point out of bounds.

Q7 and Q8) Removing facial hair rule.

I'm not sure what Q5 would look like, but it's interesting to me.  College out of bounds is long overdue, this would simplify the out of bounds call tremendously.

CoachJoyce reacted to Hornet Coach in Accountability
Now that it's tournament time, there are a lot of wrestlers that will not end their seasons the way they want.  It is imperative, that we, as coaches, hold them accountable for their post match behavior, even when it's a disappointing match for them.  I see so many kids throw child-like temper tantrums and are disrespectful to the other wrestler, the referee, the opposing coach, and sometimes their own coach.  We owe it to them to teach them that things in life will not always go their way and that maybe they just didn't work hard enough to accomplish the goal they set out to accomplish.  You know, tell them the truth.  When it is just one individual, I understand, it is probably just the one wrestler, however, when it's the majority of the team, it has to be what is tolerated as a program.  Making good wrestlers is very important to all of us, making great people through the lessons of our great sport, should be the ultimate goal.  Good luck to everyone advancing in the tournament and let's all do our part for the sake of our young people!
