I’m a bit of an outsider looking in(I’m a ranker but not a coach), but as unbiased as I can attempt to be, the semi-state has been on a clear rise over the last few seasons. It doesn’t help much that there’s seemingly a lot of smaller class schools in the Ft. Wayne semi-state. Delta, Jay County, Adams Central, Bellmont, Western have been tough battles for nearly any team in recent years, but a lot of schools are coming out this season or last. Cowan, Homestead, Snider, North Miami among others are now littered with kids that will give your stud a brutal match-up. Yorktown is back in the rise after a brief down period. And best of all, freshman classes just keep getting more talented. The current coaching in the Wayne looks pretty dang good to me.

First, it is very subjective & no two officials are going to call it exactly the same.

Second, wrestling the edge is not smart wrestling. It is actually in the NFHS rules that "playing the edge of the mat" is stalling. It needs to be called more. But again it is subjective. Did wrestler A push wrestler B to the edge, or did wrestler B backup to the edge. Who is trying to play the edge?

Third, simply pushing your opponent out of bounds without ever attempting a TD technique is stalling also. It is in the rules.

But to your question. The difference between stalling & fleeing can be & is often difficult to distinguish. IMO, fleeing has to be flagrant. The example I am about to use is certainly not the only situation that can happen but it is a good example where the same result can be "wrestling action", "stalling" or "fleeing".

    1) Wrestler A pushes wrestler B to the edge then when A shoots B sprawls out of bounds - wrestling action.
    2) Wrestler B backs up to the edge while engaged with his opponent then sprawls out of bounds as wrestler A shoots - stalling.
    3) Wrestler B backs up to the edge avoiding engagement & runs/steps out of bounds as wrestler A shoots - fleeing.

My point is that the same result happened in the 3 scenarios but the subtle differences should lead to a different call by the official. But the difference between pushing, backing-up & avoiding can be subtle & will be interpreted differently by every different individual. Especially by those who have a bias one way or the other.

But how do you interpret a sprawl out of bounds? This is a very vague call

Most impressive thing to me about Ocampo’s win was she was down 5 early and almost pinned, but just went back to plugging away.  That’s the type of heart and fight we need to see out of all wrestlers.

Not sure if you are being serious, but would probably do better than here in Evansville.  I really don’t mind the actual venue. It’s just the location of said venue. It does need to be more centrally located to get the most spectators. I really believe that the kids deserve a large crowd. They have been wrestling their butts off. There are no slouches in this building today.

If you aren't going to post your picks, then don't criticize other people's picks. Plain and simple.

You only got 3 out of 56 state qualifiers correct, you are in last place of the pick'ems. Don't run your mouth when you can't keep up with the pack.

Well none of them won semi-state, so you had 14 wrong there. That's a good start, what about 2nd through 4th placers? You also missed six projected champs that didn't make it to state at all. That's a rough start and we only know 8 of your 56 picks.

Again, you call out two of 56 picks and yet don't post them yourself.

Till this day I remember my lost at semi state my senior year. I had done everything I could possibly due that summer leading into to make it to state. Well at least I had thought I did, a lot of those kids making It to state and the state podium put in countless hours of practice, have a strong support system, are true students of the sport.

Either way I remember being sad, hurt, and disappointed. However wrestling does not define who we are, winning is awesome, being the best in the state I imagine is amazing, but the most important thing is who we become once it is all said and done. Who are we once we stop competing? How do we carry ourselfes professionally after this? Are we helping the sport grow?

This sport will teach you many things, but I feel the number  one thing it shows you is how to work for something you want.

I did this more as a stream of consciousness, so I apologize if it’s a little incoherent and if there are some grammatical errors, but I thought this was something important I wanted to get out there
