If we want to bring up a century old name Richard Voliva did pretty good for himself post HS with only earning two state titles.  First Big10 wrestler to become a national champ, also a national runner up and an Olympic silver medalist.  Not sure Indiana has ever had a Olympic gold yet, so he’s the standard bearer there.

It’s looks he had quite the coaching career too.

At the MAC Tournament, Jordan Slivka won by TF in Opening round and 5-0 in the Quarterfinal advancing to the Semis against Ben Barton of Loch Haven.  The MAC only has 2 allocations at 157 so he'll need to win his semifinal to be ensured of an NCAA Berth.  At 24-5 I'd guess he'd have a good shot at an at-large bid if he doesn't finish top 2.

Carson Brewer won his opener then fell in the Quarterfinal to top seed Will Feldkamp, 7-1.

Best of luck to the Hoosier Bobcats!

  3. It’s an outstanding idea, and really makes sense at the college level. It’s hard to maintain interest and eyeballs when you have a weeks long gap in the middle of the season. IU for example has a near month layoff.

The most compelling reason in my opinion is shifting the marquee event to the sporting dead zone of April and away from the b-ball tourney. Think of the millions in promotional dollars have been spent by the NCAA to draw viewers to the women’s tournament in direct competition with wrestling. It’s stupid for the NCAA to cannibalize it’s own product but there is no reason to believe they would ever give wrestling an even footing. Imagine how many additional viewers Matness could draw when it’s actually being promoted (albeit not to the extent of b-ball) and not it direct competition with two heavily promoted tournaments?

Tuition is $55k/year. I don’t know the Cernus family financial position, but the aid these families receive is certainly a factor in attending Culver. It is the same problem the Indy private’s face, but on steroids.

I doubt that was the issue. Wyoming Sem. Is one of the top prep schools for wrestling in the country, so it seems likely this was an opportunity move. No knock on Culver but that's a different level.

Definitely thought it was Zain's move. Yianni just wrapped the chest and went with it. The camera from the other side of the mat illustrates the sequence much clearer, IMO. Ultimately, the correct call was made. Sucks it's all become such a mess. No way in the world would I take on reffing a high level FS bout.

I agree about not wanting to be in the position to make that call, but I felt like Zain had reached a point of limited progression. Not that retherford wasn't continuing to work, but it appears Yanni makes it his move. Maybe the other angle shows it differently but from my estimation it was Yanni's points. That's always going to be an issue when so much is dependent on a referees opinion.

Well looks like 133 for Big Ten's just got a while lot tougher with Gross transfer to Wisconsin. We could see Suriano / Micic a couple of times. Maybe Gross goes to 141.

    Gross - Wisconsin (2nd & 1st at SDSU), Suriano-Rutgers (2nd, 1st) , Micic-Michigan (4th,2nd,3rd), Pletcher-OSU (4th, 4th), DeSanto-Iowa (5th), RB-Young-Penn State (8th),

Agreed. Big Tens will be crazy again at 133 and 141 next year. Gross may land at 141, I think he cut a lot at 133. He will be interesting at either weight. Top 5 guys in both weights are 2 TDs better in neutral but his top game is on another level with only Spencer Lee being close. Gross has surely benefited from the 4 point nf as much as anyone, and I don't anticipate that will change much after the year off.

  7. Another really strong showing by the Indiana boys! Congrats to Mendez, and all the guys. This following IN getting 30% of the junior world team and 20% of the cadet pan am team, and an overall great performance at both the open and wtt. This is the golden age of IN wrestling.

How the hell do I get a flo arena link to flo nationals? This mess is turrrrrrible, I hate flo arena!

No doubt, floarena is the poopy flavored lollipop of the bracket world. Getting to it is no picnic either. That said I love the video and for the last year or so the streaming has been good.

You have to keep in mind Flo doesn't promote wrestling they just sell folkstyle/freestyle crack to those already addicted. Addicts are willing to endure great pains to get their fix. Flo is testing your fortitude with floarena

  9. https://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/press-releases/espns-record-setting-ncaa-wrestling-championship-coverage-reaches-millions-of-viewers/

There was a 40% increase with online viewership. The total number of households on the TV broadcast were still pretty small. Interesting to see some of the southern cities represented in the top 8. Maybe they just leave the TV on ESPN all day, or there is growth in interest in places like Birmingham.

  10. Those are some excellent ideas to enhance both numbers of kids and the overall quality of experience they have with the sport.

Here are a couple of thoughts I'd add:

The first idea would be indirect recruitment via increased interest in the meets. Reach out to non-sports departments like the band director, art teacher, drama/theatre club, and cheer coach (I know this is technically a sport). Getting the pep band to perform at matches adds energy and excitement as well as putting additional parents and friends in the stands. Drama club for lightning up the mat, creating showy entrances and adding additional flair, making the meets fun events. Those kids would have parents and friends too. Art teacher for potentially making a class project of creating promotional posters for individual home meets. They could be like WWE or Concert posters or whatever the kids come up with. The art kid would suddenly have an interest in attending an event they did the promo poster for and there folks would too.

All are low to no cost options to utilize the resources available, and give kids opportunities to apply their skills doing what they enjoy in a practical environment. All this creates ownership in the wrestling program from the various groups that are contributing in their way to grand event. The greater interest in the meets will make it a lot easier to recruit kids out for the team.

    Quarterfinals
    @165
#1 seed Alex Marinelli of Iowa goes down to 8-seed Mehki Lewis of VA Tech 3-1 SV-1.
Evan Wick wins by fall over Chance Marsteller
    - Wick will face Lewis in the semifinal breaking up the expected Marinelli vs. Joseph Final
Vincenzo Joseph wins another tight match with Nebraska's Isaiah White 3-1 SV-1
Joshua Shields of Airzona State wins 6-0 over Bryce Steiert of Northern Iowa.  He'll face Joseph in the semifinal. Joseph won their only match up 11-2 in a December dual

Cael McCormick's match was frustrating...  In OT, Gunther held the riding time advantage and basically stalled on his feet half a TB period, a full SV2 period and half a TB2 period.  McCormick made a mistake by choosing down in TB2 with a 4-3 deficit and a riding time deficit.  He got the escape to tie it at 4, but only had about 12 seconds to get a take down and Gunther wouldn't even let him close.  Cael should have started TB2 on his feet knowing he was going to need two points to win.  Whether he or his coaches made the decision to go down, it wasn't the correct one.  And why Gunther gets no stalling warnings until :03 left is beyond me.  Unfortunately, Cael has been eliminated.

    @174
Zahid Valencia attacks off the whistle, builds an 11-4 lead and gets the fall against Army's Brian Harvey
Daniel Lewis of Missouri gets the fall over Nebraska's Mikey Labriola
    - The #2 and #3 seeds Lewis vs. Valencia meet in the semis.  Should be a great match!
Mark Hall wins with a workmanlike 5-3 decision over Taylor Lujan of UNI
Myles Amine gets a tough 4-2 SV-1 win over Lehigh's Jordan Kutler
    - Hall and Amine face off in the semifinal.  Hall is 4-0 against Amine, all 1 point decisions

Dylan Lydy wins a 5-4 decision over Matt Finesilver of Duke and moves on.

Juxtapose the officiating in Cael's match vs Stoll Parris. These are officials at the same tournament. I know you are supposed to adjust to the way the match is being called, but with that much variable on how stalling is called it can be tough on the athletes.

I believe stalling should be called on guys who dont open up on their feet or refuse to make any offensive effort. (Pushing a guy out of bounds after he just turns to face from an escape isn't the precursor to offense its jobbing the rules)

Some really good performances by some Indiana kids in the first session. Hildebrandt, Lee, Red, McCormick, Harvey were all incredible.

Sadly, the Parris loss really dampened the whole experience. We all knew he was undersized and that he struggles with the bigger guys, but I think it was just highlighted all the more again. I really hope he can make a run still, but bigger guys have figured him out a bit. Those next 10 or 15 pounds will make such a big difference, but I hope that loss doesn't derail this season's promise.

The asterisk of the early session for me is Micic. Of course he won easily enough, but I wasn't comfortable picking him to win a title with his knee issue and the vulnerability he showed in moments in that match didn't alleviate my feelings of uneasiness about challenges he'll face in the later rounds.

He is definitely less than 100%. He techs that kid in 2 periods 3 weeks ago. Micic was the clear #1 all year it's just a shame he isn't fully healthy right now.
