My opinion is that the parents play the biggest part. You have the parents who are going for gold burning their kids out. Then you have the parents who are in the "wussification" of their children meaning they believe their kid is going to get hurt. You also have the selfish parents who don't want to travel or sit in the gym for an hour, let alone 3 or more. They're glued to their phones more than watching their kids. Then you have the "stigma" parents who think the sport is just vulgar and boys shouldn't wrestle girls, and all the other nonsense. Lastly, you have the good parents who do things the right way. If it was mostly up to the kids, they'd more than likely keep wrestling.

I agree....kind of.  I was the parent represented in the bold/italicized/underlines sentence above when I was asked by a friend/parent that they thought my kid might enjoy/be good at it.  Once I was in though (and my wife as well) we were HOOKED.  The benefits of the sport have more to do with the intangibles (future success) off the mat that they do with winning on the mat.

A major part of it is parents and the events. Name another sport where a kid will get 5 minutes of "playing time" over 3-8 hours? The way we have always done it can't be an excuse to change the format of our events. I know we have a lot of success with the weeknight events where another club comes and they match up on the fly.

We have to sell the sport to not only the kids, but also the parents or they'll find something else for their kid to do.

    Y2:

Gymnastics and swimming are the other sports.  My belief is that the key is to get parents involved by selling the long term benefits of the sport (re: above) prior to entry.  While there aren't EVEN CLOSE TO THE ELITE monetary success stories of these three sports as there is to the big three (basketball, football, baseball), the intrinsic benefits of involvement are not to be doubted.  There just aren't a lot of "other than" high quality humans in this world who either wrestled, swam or tumbled.

    IMHO

Warren does a great job hosting ISWA State finals,

But not getting phone service is very frustrating.

I had difficult time logging into Trackwrestling to follow matches.

I had to go outside to update everytime.

I thought groups of people outside were smoking, but they were trying to pull up trackwrestling.

    I missed several phone calls.

Almost missed one of KT's matches.

Congrats on the two 113lb titles this weekend Papa Nelson.  Glad you didn’t miss that match!

Dumb move on his part, and was embarrassed instantly after

I don't know about that.  He's got a great story to tell his kids.  He was only down 10 when he got pinned in the 3rd.  Much better than Nolf's typical opponent.  If you saw the handshake after the match, Todrank was very respectful.

Nolf was just upset he got cut instead of get time to do some bottom work.

I disagree. I think the dance upset Nolf. Pin by cradle came within 15 seconds after that dance. Todrank is a good kid though.

  6. My daughter was the oldest kid in her class. We held her back in kindergarten because she would have been the youngest in her class and was not emotionally ready in our opinion and it all worked out fine.  All of the teacher or counselors said the same thing. No parents who held their kid back as they start school ever regretted but many parents who didn’t wish they had. The reason they wish they had was because to hold them back later is too late (i.e. too hard on them socially/culturally).

Little known fact, but Estell Ritter was held back solely for wrestling.  Also for farming because it was a tough crop back in 1924, but none the less his parents seemed to be concerned with his wrestling career.

Another little known fact: Estell was a woman!

Seeing how they have over done it in some college meets I’m am hesitant of having it, especially under the coaches control.  Does it fix some mistakes yes, but it also seems to cause problems too with match delays and allowing the tired wrestlers a breather.  I can maybe see it at the higher stakes events if the officials feel the call was close enough that a video replay would be helpful to judge a scoring situation. And even then limit it to a few views and if it’s not decisive the call stands so that the action can continue without. 10min break.  However, I can see how automatically giving replay just because a coach throw a brick could become as much of a hinderance to the match in some cases as it could be a help.

Breathers happen all the time in wrestling. You don’t need replay to get them accomplished.

Maybe to the average traveler 31 is an option.  However, the interchange from US30 can be very confusing.  Avoid the construction and confusion, go via Merrillville.

Wait.  Are you saying instead of going I-69 from the NE side of Indiana to Indy, someone should instead drive across to the NW side of the state and then down I-65?  Wouldn't that add at least 1 to 1-1/2 hours?
