The Indy school shake up will create a very deep regional at Perry
    Perry
    Warren
    Greenfield Central
New Pal (gonna be really good really soon)
    Mount Vernon
    Lawrence North
    North Central
    Roncalli
    Beech Grove
    LC
Franklin Central plus other schools that have decent size too

How would you like to be tiny Lutheran or Triton Central, or Purdue Polytechnic?

even if Perry and Warren never return to the programs they were in 2003-2019, the sheer depth is going to make that a tough road for those teams just to make Semi-state

Maybe (emphasis on the maybe) even deeper than Mooresville overall who has

    Brownsburg
    Center Grove
    Avon
    Ben Davis
    Plainfield
    Decatur Central
    Pike
    Mooresville
    Martinsville
    Greenwood
    Whiteland

The edge at the top would certainly go to Mooresville but I’d put the 2nd-5th placers at this regional up against any in the state.

The Tech Sectional has Cathedral and...

Southport Sectional has Beech Grove, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Mt. Vernon (Fortville), North Central(Indianapolis), Perry Meridian, Roncalli, and Southport.

Cathedral will pretty much always have 14 sectional champs.

A national competition like this, you’re wrestling best chance to win, other June matches, I’m most often putting my guys on bottom to get live looks from someone who’s not their practice partner on top.
    It’s a balance.
I also think you try to protect that ego by reading body language at end of periods, I’ll never pick neutral for them but if I want them confident I’ll throw it back to them and say your choice bottom or neutral. This little psychological trick usually results in an escape when they go bottom. Either A) they knew they could get out and did or B realized it was their choice and are extra motivated to get away because coach gave them the choice.

Saw some really fun match-ups this weekend. I was mostly coaching my kids and with 3 gyms, I didn't get to see all the best match ups but some really good ones I did see:

In Freestyle, at 16U 170, Xavier Smith of Fishers took out some really big up and comers, dominating his way over Coy Bender and Ethan Farnell before following it up with an even more dominant Greco State title. As the Rival HS Head Coach, I'm not looking forward to having to deal with him for 3 more years. He hit two 5 point throws in one match over our 170 who is no slouch at all in Greco.

Jensen Boyd was a pleasure to watch compete at 106 at 16U as you might imagine. He was taken to the brink in his semi-final against Mason Goelz, ultimately winning 8-7. Goelz turned around then and beat Aidan Smalley (ticket rounder this past season) in one of the best barn burners I've seen, just back and forth the whole time with Smalley taking a 2 point lead with criteria as well with about 12 seconds remaining but Goelz was able to get a takedown and a gut as time expired to win it. Impressive young man all weekend. I'm sure he'll be a force in Avon's line-up for a while!

If you want to watch a match for pure entertainment value, the opening round match-up with 2 state qualifier Juniors in Pendleton Height's Jackson Todd and HSE's Zach Lang at Greco 152 had nearly 40 points scored. Fun one!

I'm sure there were others that were awesome matches, but like I said, I really only got to see my guys and others in their weights.

There's also quite a few 14U kids that are getting after it in the Olympic styles. Check out some of the light weight action at 71, 77, 83, and 87. Could be I haven't been paying as much attention before this year, because my club kids are just now getting to the age division, but it seems to me our 14U kids are more polished at the Olympic styles than ever.

Overall, really great wrestling this weekend. I think we'll be seeing a lot of success at National Duals and Fargo this summer.

Coach Brobst reacted to Nate Spangle in John Rushenberg from Bishop Chatard has committed to…
Manchester University. Projected to wrestle 157/165.
John Rushenberg joined the Bishop Chatard wrestling family ahead of the 2021-22 season as a junior and quickly became one of the Trojans’ toughest wrestlers. He was a 2-time City Champion, 2-time sectional champion, 2-time regional runner-up and reached the ticket round both years he made it to the New Castle semi-state. He finished with a record of 68-13 in his two seasons as a Trojan. John’s high school career and character is best defined by his last match, when a ticket to the state tournament was on the line in the ticket round against Warren Central’s Brenton Russell, who would go on to win the semi-state and take 4th place in the IHSAA State Finals. Trailing by four with 30 seconds left, John was slammed (his second slam in as many matches) and awarded a point to bring him within three points. After five minutes of injury time, John wanted to finish the match. He earned an escape and nearly finished a takedown to force overtime but came up short. He could have taken the injury default, and his decision speaks volumes to him and the Rushenberg family as a whole. John is the second of nine siblings and the oldest of seven boys, so expect a Rushenberg in the Chatard lineup for the next 15 years!
We are thrilled for John and his family as his best wrestling days are ahead of him at Manchester.

Heldt is a pretty special story if you don't know much about him.  As a junior in high school he was still JV 170 and believe his JV record that year was 12-5.  He grew 3 or 4 inches and spent the summer in the weight room/wrestling room with Nate Warman and everything was different after that!

Heldt also won the NCAA Elite 90 award last year when he finished NCAA Runner Up and having a 4.0 GPA.

Absolutely I'd prefer longer drives with better balanced sectionals over the opposite. I'd bet the small schools care even more. Some of those schools scrap and fight just to get 1-3 kids to Regionals in the Frankfort Sectional and then if you're in the Crawfordsville Sectional teams that are essentially the same caliber can send 6-10 kids to Regionals just because of the other teams that are in it.

That makes a difference in program building!

4 are in the same (Carmel, HSE, Fishers, Westfield)
and you’re correct, they don’t care about it and I’ve said it before, if we won’t class, we HAVe to balance the sectionals more evenly

Kids from Clinton Central, Frankfort, and Clinton Prarie HAVE to be better than at least one kid from one of those monster schools just to make regionals.

Meanwhile, a kid who goes to Tri HS can make it to Regionals some years just by weighing in.

Ask the small school coaches what a difference it makes when 2-3 extra kids make regionals or semi-state and how that motivates all the other kids.

Anyways, My point to your original post is you were trying to fix just one problem and created at least 5 more by just trying to get Brownsburg away from CG. That sectional is just one example.

I can't begin to respond to the whole thing, but here's the basics:
    1) The IHSAA will NOT change Sectionals/Regionals/Semi-states just because one is loaded with talent.
    2) I drew one up a couple years ago keeping same venues as hosts, but shuffling based on school sizes alone and balancing that out (since presently FW has only 2 4A schools), but mine, like most others, fell flat because ultimately any time one person does this, we look at it from a skewed lens of whatever benefits the teams/area we root for.

Examining the rezoning above, it is clear you definitely mean that school size doesn't matter at all when designing these Sectionals. Sectionals 3, 4, and 5 each have just one larger school (3 has Harrison, 4 has 3A McCutcheon, 5 has Lafayette Jeff) but Sectional 6 gets Noblesville, HSE, Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, AND Westfield. But don't worry Clinton Central and Sheridan kids still have just as good a chance because school size doesn't matter!

We'll see what changes will come about, but my guess is 10-15 schools max will change sectionals, maybe half that change Regionals or Semi-State. In any case, it will take a committee of people to ensure there's no bias, or at least limit it.

    Hey everyone.

I made an announcement on Facebook but wanted to share here as well because I want a great coach to come take this over.

Yesterday I resigned as the Head Wrestling Coach at Cascade High School.

To many this will come as a shock and it has absolutely nothing to do with Cascade or the state of the program as both of those are in amazing shape.

I had to make a decision for myself and do what was best for me professionally to pursue other opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me the past 2 seasons!!

I can promise you will see me in a corner next season I just don’t know what colors I will be wearing!

Anyone interested in the job at Cascade please reach out I would love to get you in contact with the right people!

Top wrestler is rewarded by not giving up an escape point.  If you can get away in less than a minute and your opponent can't, then you're a point ahead.

I'd treat the pinning combination like when refs wait to award nearfall until the hold is released.  If someone has gotten a turn (or more), then he is most likely ahead in points.  From a fan perspective, I'd prefer to see them back on their feet for a more exciting finish instead of the guy ahead just riding him out for the win.
