Thornton
Don't count your chickens yet. Merrillville semi-state was stacked at 160. Hollins isn't a pushover. All farm fowl remain unaccounted for. Enumeration of feathered fryers to be done next Sunday.

He is very smooth and has a motor that doesn't quit. I would say he is one of a half dozen kids with as good a chance as anyone.
Not10
getting an easy takedown cutting mcclurg and in on another takedown before blowing your knee out then barely able to walk so mcclurg scores an easy takedown and starts to work on his knee.... the score was 2-1 when he hurt his knee in the first 20 seconds when he was in on another shot and let go due to his knee. tatom would have dominated. its a goid thing a match isnt inly 20 seconds long cuz then he could have dominated, but we all know that didn't happen. The reality of it is, any way you draw it up, Riley got his hand raised at the end of the match and went on to show that it wasn't a fluke that he was in the semi state finals, when he beat mccloskey. How many times have we seen a 2 point lead get easily blown. We saw it 2 years in a row in the state finals with brenden Campbell from Newcastle. PatParham
Get real it wasn't a good call at all...two refs on the mat get the call right...if u think that was a good call you don't know wrestling...there would have been no argument had it been called a reversal and was at least an obvious loss of control for an escape. Lets face the facts on a lucky break for mcclurg because in the tatom match tatom was dominating that match before getting hurt and mcclurg wouldn't have made it out. 1. Even if it was an escape, I find it hard to believe that McCloskey would have won in overtime. In my opinion he is a solid wrestler, but I don't think he has the gas tank that McClurg has. 2. It is impossible to speculate on what "would" have happened in the McClurg/Tatom match. I also think "dominating" is strong language considering the score was 2-1 when Tatom got hurt. It was a shame that it had to go that way; the fans at New Castle were robbed of an epic ticket round match. It will be interesting to see how the weekend goes... good luck to all competing! benni hanna 79
Don't leave the match in the hands of a ref. Perhaps that should be the talk instead of saying the referees are crazy. Because as we all know a bad call will happen, but you have to take the match into your hands. Can't complain about a call.

No excuses, he won. Many people have came to Austin saying "man you got screwed" or "that was a horrible call" Austin's reply to them every time is "its no ones fault but my own".... So dont take nothing away from mclurg, he went to win a semi state title, and he did. That should be the end of it, so give the kid the credit he deserves!! DuneFan
This is a late reply on the McClurg-Hollins match. I said to "not count your chickens yet . Well Hollins lost Fri. night 7 to 5 and Hollins was a 4th place finisher at Merrillville. I would go on further to say that hade any other 2 officials worked the McClurg -McCloskey match the result would have been different. McCloskey got scre------d out of 2 takedowns that should have been called and I have never seen worse sportsmanship shown than what McClurg exhibited after his victory. I hope his head injury didn't turn into a concussion though. See you next year. Have a good summer

I hope his head injury didn't turn into a concussion though. See you next year. Have a good summer You should be ashamed. As a Perry alum, I am going to stand up for Riley. Have you ever wrestled a match in front of 12,000 people? I doubt it. You're a coward criticizing a high schooler on a public forum. Pathetic. Riley had never been to state, therefore I know he was beyond nervous wrestling Friday night. He told me afterwards that it felt like he was breathing from the neck up, which is understandable for a kid who has never wrestled on a stage of that size. If you go back and watch the film, the first edge of the mat scramble McClurg had a wizzer and had both of his hips up. Read the rule book, a wrestler must be given reaction time. And if you are thinking of the second scramble, there was obviously no control. Riley was almost doing the splits on the edge of the mat while Austin had one leg - no control. At the end of the day, Riley has a blue ring and you are a cowardly adult hiding behind a computer. In my mind, if you win a state title you can do whatever you like. You're the best in the state and you'll go down in the history books as an IHSAA state champion. Austin is a great wrestler and the two matches he and Riley had were a treat to watch. I wish Austin and his family the best of luck, for he has a bright future ahead of him. GO FALCONS!!!
