rookie78
Do first round winners at regional go on to semi state still even though there were wrestle backs at sectionals to 5th? Or does that not affect anything?

busstogate
I thought the first round losers were bumped into a 5th place consi bracket to find a true alternate and that this was happening at regionals and semistate this year.
unknown wrestler
I've been wrong before! Someone know the true answer?
MattM
Regional: 8-man bracket. If you win your first round match (quarter finals) you will place somewhere in the top allowing you to advance to semi-state. Winning your second round match (semi-finals) puts you in the championship match and losing it places you in the 3rd/4th match. According to the new IHSAA decision if you lose the first round match (quarter-finals) you are now placed in a consolation bracket to wrestle-off for the true alternate spot of 5th place. Semi-State: 16-man bracket. If you lose the first round you are done no wrestle-backs even for the alternate position. If you win the first round match your in the ticket-round match (quarter-finals). Win the quarter-finals round your top 4. Lose and you are in a consolation bracket for the true alternate. Essentially the same exact rules for the quarter-finals on as was listed above for regional. State-Finals: 16-man bracket. Same exact rules as Semi-State. Though those who lose on the second day/round (quarter-finals) will continue to wrestle on through to determine all of the placements down to 8th in a modified version of wrestle backs (lose in quarters you do a consolation bracket to determine 5th-8th and lose in semi-finals you wrestle for 3rd/4th). There is no actual wrestling backs for Regional and Semi-State, just a consolation round to determine a true-alternate. If we want to turn this into some type of true wrestle-backs in the future we need to find a way to convince the IHSAA it's beneficial to both them and us to add that round. FYI- It wouldn't be to much more time wise than their current consolation alternate system that was just added.
maligned
In short, it's not wrestlebacks. It's a mini consolation tournament for 5th place.

Fabio Jr.
If we have to really comprimise, I would at least like to see a true fourth match implemented. If the 5th place wrestler and 4thplace wrestler did not meet in the tournament they wrestle for fourth place. it would very rarely add a full round to the tournament. 1894life
so if you win your first 2 matches at semi state, you are a state qualifier?

decbell1
Does anyone else see this as more of a move for team scoring instead of finding a true alternate?
MattM
Does anyone else see this as more of a move for team scoring instead of finding a true alternate? I think it is was they claim it to be, a better way of determining the alternate. I agree, that allowing the last person to lose to the champion didn't really work (since most champions are #1 making the alternate a sectional #4). I always said they should have made it the highest eliminated sectional placer (with tie going to the kid from the winners sectional) would work for an alternate, but this mini-tournament works too. Though most would prefer an actual wrestle-back at least his is a more legit way of finding an alternate. The question will be will enough eliminated kids take it seriously. Are they counting it as part of the team score? Their was an earlier debate about this issue but no conclusion.
