  3. How do those schools keep the kids that are good enough to be varsity elsewhere (prior ihsaa qualifiers/placers, offseason iswa placers, etc.), but can't make their way into the varsity lineup at these schools?
  4. The kids that go to these schools are wrestling national level events during the season through their school. These are the same kids that are wrestling off season national events. A family should not have to forgo great national events and exposure for their child simply because of the wrestling program they are in. Kids see Brownsburg, Crown Point, and Center Grove being nationally ranked and, therefore, getting bigger events on their schedule. It is hard to argue for them to stay put in a program that is not nationally recognized with teammates that may not be year round wrestlers. Families and athletes want to be a part of something special. Being able to compete as a team for titles has a certain allure. Is this any different than other sports programs? Families will go where their child can get the best looks and have a high chance of success. If more programs had national level events for their athletes to compete in, would we see the amount of transfers happening?
  5. Not surprising, guess we'll just keep hearing about all the kids moving to Center Grove, Crown Point, Browsnburg etc. Really great for the sport.
  6. While at freestyle state this past weekend I heard the Malone family will be moving to Center Grove.

  11. I feel for Coleman Scott, but you have to get yourself out of your own rut when you have an opportunity like like this. Another 15 years of classic Cowboy wrestling isn't winning any national titles. Taylor may flame out and suck as a head coach, (I don't think he will) but you have to take a big swing. For coaches, I heard it's Gillman and Jimmy Kennedy coming with him. Didn't know this, but Kennedy is his brother-in-law. He's looking for a heavyweight coach as well, and it'll probably be a big name. Recruiting could be nuts for Taylor. He obviously can't run M2 anymore, but the club will continue to run under someone he hires and he'll instantly have a pipeline to Pennsylvania talent. It'll be interesting if any Penn State guys follow him to OK State. Haines and Kasak were M2 guys. Now they can't just hop in the portal now and be eligible, but they both were looking at redshirt years so it's in the realm of possibility. And OK State can do some major damage this year yet on the national scene. Penn State still looms large as the heavy favorite, but OK State has a very good team put together for next year, and they seem to be the favorites to land Andrew Alirez and Wyatt Hendrickson from the portal. Their lineup could look like this going into the season. 125 - Troy Spratley, blood round finisher now getting Gillman to work with 133 - Cael Hughes, blue chip recruit coming off redshirt wrestling behind Fix 141 - Tagen Jamison/Jordan Williams, not sure if Williams can go down, but if Alirez does transfer in he's going 149. Both Jamison and Williams were national qualifiers 149 - Andrew Alirez, national champ as a possible transfer 157 - Teague Travis, round of 16 165 - Caleb Fish, transfer in round of 16 174 - Dean Hamiti, transfer in multiple time AA and national champion contender 184 - Dustin Plott, national runner-up now getting coached by DT 197 - Christian Carroll, no intro needed on this website 285 - Wyatt Hendrickson, two time third placer as a possible transfer Now two of those transfers have to happen, but if they do that lineup has potential to be awesome.

  16. Anyone else mind boggled over this one occurring. There were rumors the last few days, but it still unexpected considering a prestigious alumni like Colman Scott with a solid coaching record quite a decent head coaching job to take the heir apparent role under Smith all this season. And now he’s passed by even if it was for Taylor. I feel bad for Scott if he didn’t do anything that blatantly made the school consider rejecting him prior to Taylor’s interest. Someone in the search process at OK St. clearly was looking for the magic (pun intended) beans that may knock Penn State down a peg. It would be safe to say this pretty much signals an end to Taylor’s international career. Who does Taylor bring in as assistance that can start chipping away at Penn State’s recruiting and training dominance. Does Taylor retain at least one OK St. legacy coach to help retain current top commits? Who may he grab from the recruiting or transfer pool over Penn State? Where do the rest of OK St. staff likely end up? So many questions and answers are not coming quick enough.

  18. All fair points. Yazdani was at 66kg as a junior and started his senior career at 70kg. While he has clearly grown into 86kg, a 16kg jump is huge and I agree that Taylor fits the weight better and generally looks bigger than Yazdani when they compete (but not stronger). The main caveat, which also applies to Yazdani, is that the competition at 86kg has not been very strong, with DT and Yazdani sharing Golds between them as Sadulaev and Sharifov moved up after 2016. The next best guys were likely Iranian (Ghasempour, Karimi) or American but the rest of the world was not competitive (shown in DT and Yazdani's finish rate at Worlds/Olympics).

  20. Yes, for sure. They're equal in Olympic and World golds--but then Yazdani has 5 additional medals compared to only 1 for Taylor. Plus, Yazdani took worldwide Golds at 2 different weights. (I think, too, that if there had been an in-between Olympic weight class like 79 or 80kg, Yazdani might be undefeated since 2016. I think Taylor's body naturally fit 86kg better than Yazdani; but if both would have stayed down 6 or 7kg all these years, it would have been a better fit for Yazdani than Taylor.) But the "who was better" argument is obviously going to come down to what you prefer: overall resume vs. apex quality level. For a 7-year period from the U.S. trials in 2017 to the U.S. trials in 2024--Taylor was 70-1 across all freestyle matches in a traditionally very crowded weight class. As with all American wrestlers, he was not originally a freestyle wrestler--but there is a strong argument that once he fully adapted to the style and the 86kg weight class, he was at a level attained by only a few freestyle wrestlers historically. And part of that argument, obviously, is that he handed an all-time legend like Yazdani himself 5 of his 8 career losses (4 during that 7-year period, of course).

  22. The last time Yazdani lost to someone who hasn't DT was to Tsabalov in 2016. The last time DT lost to a non-American who wasn't Yazdani was to a Ukrainian also in 2016. Kinda funny. But the big difference is that DT has a lot of losses to quite a few Americans (5 losses to Dake alone, 4 losses to JB, 2 losses to Cox, 2 losses to Brooks) while Yazdani has never lost against an Iranian. I would say Yazdani has the superior resume overall but they both have excellent wins (DT's 1-2 record against Cox and 1-4 record against JB, the only win coming against a much older JB, arguably let him down a bit). Yazdani has wins over 6 World or Olympic champions: Tsabalov, Gadzhiev, Taghavi, Sharifov, Ghasempour, and Taylor. Taylor has wins over 5 World or Olympic champions: Kurbanaliev, Sharifov, Yazdani, Cox, and Burroughs.
  23. Yazdani has definitely been more consistent across all weights in his career. Of course you can point to some of DT's losses in his own country as understandable (Burroughs, Dake, Cox); but Yazdani reached the top level at a much younger age, and Yazdani developed consistency at 86kg much more quickly than DT did. It's almost funny to read some of DT's results from 2015 and 2016.
