  1. I've had this conversation a few times with some very knowledgable wrestling people. I guess I'm just curious to know how good of a chance Riley Lefever would have to be a stud at the Division-I level of wrestling? We all know he has an awesome set of skills for a bigger wrestler and dominates at his level. But I'm curious to know how well his current skill set would translate to the D-I level. Obviously this is all hypothetical, but I would love some insight from my fellow wrestling fans.
  2. IMO, I say go for that Olympic Medal. You already got your NCAA title, now go train in Colorado and get the hardware that REALLY matters!
  3. Up until about 2012, at Garrett, our wrestling room was the upstairs balcony in the main basketball gym. We would drop down a curtain so that the bball players didn't have to see us working harder and louder.. Good times huh Y2?
  4. I don't think class wrestling will solve our current problem here in Indiana. In my opinion, for the state of Indiana to become a recognized wrestling powerhouse, consistently producing high caliber division-I prospects, we need to start having our best teams compete in high caliber tournaments in surrounding states. A thing that immediately comes to mind are the Flo Major tournaments. If we could get 3 to 5 of our best in-state teams to go and compete in these tournaments on a yearly basis: 1.) they will immensely increase their exposure to division-I recruiters, which puts our best Indiana wrestlers on the national radar 2.) Wrestle against much higher levels of competition (there are typically 2-3 nationally ranked kids at each weight class in these tournaments, if not more) 3.) Expand the sphere of wrestling for our Indiana guys, meaning that they will be exposed to other styles and wrestlers they would not typically see competing only in Indiana. I have solid testimony proving this approach. My brother Hayden Lee was your typical 3-time state placer in Indiana wrestling on a subpar schedule with Garrett High School, which didn't translate well come state finals time. Fast forward to his senior year in Ohio: Hayden wrestled in 4 Flo Major tournaments in the regular season, winning one of them (Top Gun) and was eventually able to win a state title. The level of competition he was facing in these tournaments facing nationally ranked kids every weekend, I believe prepared him for a career with a prestigious Division-I program such as Arizona State. If our best teams here in Indiana could adopt something similar by competing in Flo Majors, I believe our best in-state wrestlers will go on to have great Division-I careers!
  5. If Kayla Miracle qualifies for the Olympics next summer, I think this weight will have to go down as an all-time top 3. An almost entire field of Division I and II caliber wrestlers, plus a potential olympian. That's big time.
  6. My brother Hayden used his redshirt this year out at ASU. Has wrestled in 3 open tourneys this year and is primed to be the starter at 125 next season!
  7. Ohhh yes. No way I can forget my brother wrestling her on Friday night. 4-0 was too close for comfort haha
  8. 106 lb weight class at state in 2011-2012: -Nathan Boston: 3-time state champion (2 out of state, 1 in Indiana), currently wrestling @ Iowa State -Stefan Micic: 3-time state champion, currently wrestling @ Northwestern -Hayden Lee: 1-time state champion (Div. 1 Ohio), currently wrestling @Arizona State -Tommy Cash: 1-time state champion, committed to wrestle @ Indiana University -DJ Smith: 1-time state champion, currently wrestling @ University of Indianapolis -Zach Davis: 2-time state runner-up, currently wrestling @ U.S. Naval Academy -Sawyer Miller: 2-time state semi-finalist, committed to wrestle @ Indiana Tech -Jacob Cottey: 2-time state placer, currently wrestling @ Wabash -Conner Knapp: 2-time, (potentially 3-time) state placer -Kayla Miracle: First girl to qualify for state finals, 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic hopeful Quite Impressive to say the least.
  9. Seems like a really big trend in Indiana for all of our big-name studs that can't cut it academically at a Division-I university end up training and fighting in MMA. I can think of Jarred Brooks and Devon Jackson just to name a few.
  10. 106: Christian Hunt (my Dark Horse) 113: Garrett Pepple 120: Breyden Bailey 126: Chad Red 132: Nick Lee 138: Brandon James (wins a very close rematch w/Cash) 145: Cael McCormick 152: Tommy Forte 160: Gabe Koontz (w/the upset against Hughes) 170: Dillon Jackson (Have a feeling he'll peak at the proper time, gonna try to match his brother with a state title) 182: Chase Osborn (senior on a mission) 195: Blake Rypel 220: Elisio Guerra (Could go to Woods though, but I'll take Guerra's seniority into account) 285: Norman Ogelsby (Senior and has been under the lights before)
  11. Come on Y2! You gonna let a 17 yr old call you out on your hair?!?
  12. I'm not delusional am I? Did I just see people mentioning that Mrs. Cash should have a Division-I coaching spot? Like Chris Carter always says, "C'MON MAN!"
  13. I honestly think a match between these two could go either way. Lee is really fundamentally sound, while Cash makes his money off of his Ben Askren-style of wrestling. I really hope these two meet up in the finals this year. Would be a great one to watch.
  14. Christian Hunt from Yorktown is looking to have a solid freshman campaign.
  15. Yawn at the fact that starfire fans/wrestlers are the ones mainly posting on this.....
  16. 3-year wrestler from Garrett High School - Hayden Lee at Arizona State
  17. Best headlock I've witnessed personally: Finals match between McKinley and Kiefer a couple years ago. BOOM!
  18. I cannot wait to see this movie! Finally a wrestling movie with a true story that will attract more than wrestling fans. However, I'm not sure what I think about Channing Tatum being cast as Dave Shultz. Great actor but I don't really see the resemblance.
  19. Alright guys! Who let Garrett Webber start a topic on his only move?
  20. I'm all about how well our guys do at the Division I level of wrestling. What have we had in the past ten to fifteen years, like 3 DI NCAA Champs? (Angel, A. Howe, and Tsirtsis). If that number is correct and I'm not forgetting anyone, I would have to say that is quite lackluster compared to the big-time wrestling states in the U.S. Are our DI produced wrestlers not as thoroughly prepared for the next level because of the lack of depth and competition in our state??? I think that might be the case!
  21. I have so much respect for all of the big guys! But let's be honest, what person, after sitting in Banker's Life for hours on end, is going to want to stick around till 1030-11 p.m. to watch a match the typically is low scoring, low action, and is hardly exciting? Maybe start the finals an hour earlier, because I know for a fact that no one wants to stick around that late unless they have a HWT to root for.
  22. Cody Zink from Woodlan a few years back was a solid wrestler but always seemed to run into trouble in the ticket round at SS.
  23. Currently ranked 9th according to FLO. I am so excited to see how well he does this year. Any outside chance of him placing in the top 4 at NCAAs?
  24. You guys must not have listened to Burroughs. He wants to sell a shoe that everyone can afford. He literally said this after he won his Gold Medal, because not everyone can afford a pair of $115 Rulon's.
  25. We need more coaches like this!!!! Not ones that wear sun glasses to the state finals. ;D ;D ;D
