I noticed that a couple of freshman wrestlers  met in the Maryville Kaufman Brand Open finals in the amateur division at 174 pounds.  In a re-match from last year's IHSAA State Finals 3rd/4th place match, Derek Blubaugh (UIndy via Bloomington South) gained a bit of revenge by defeating Elijah Mahan (Lindenwood via Roncalli) 12-6 in the tournament finals.   Mahan defeated Blubaugh 13-10 to capture 3rd at 170 pounds at State last season.

FYI - Cathedral is NOT a Parochial school!

The Roncalli Rebels should be making another top ten run this season.  The defending New Castle SS Champions have three returning state placers, three additional returning SS qualifiers and at least one impact freshman.  The Rebels have also added 2-time NCAA Qualifier Bryce Martin (IU), IHSAA State Champion DJ Smith, and former Rebel stars Joe Kieffer and state placer Nick Clifton  to the coaching staff. 

Wrestling and coaching in Indiana, I always appreciated the Indiana single-class system.  I was lucky enough to also coach state finalists in both Georgia and Ohio who both use multi-class systems with same date/venue state finals.  In my opinion, that format really took away some impact on being a state finalist and placewinner.  I much prefer the single-class format.  
I wrestled at a DII college and, at that time, DII champions were often invited to the DI championships and some did very well.  There were some DI National Champions from DII schools.  I remember one heavyweight  from Pittsburgh-Johnstown and some others from Cal State Bakersfield.
