The Berne Witness will webcast the ACAC tournament this Friday night beginning at approximately 7 p.m. Our broadcast will be available on our website (bernewitness.com), on IHSAAtv, through our YouTube channel and on our Facebook page.
This is the beginning of four straight weeks of wrestling webcasts for us. We'll also have the sectional and regional tournaments at Jay County and the Fort Wayne Semi-State.

AC Computer reacted to Dave Cloud in NWCA Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year
It is my privilege to congratulate the men who have been named as Indiana's National Wrestling Coaches Association Head Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year.
    Head Coach of the Year
Tony Currie of Adams Central High School has continued to build the great wrestling tradition for the Jets. Now in his 15th year of coaching at the school, first as a volunteer, then assistant and now head coach, Tony has continued to build Adams Central Wrestling. The Jets won the IHSWCA Team State Duals this past season. The team compiled a 23-3 record and claimed the team titles at both the IHSAA Sectional and Regional tournaments. Coach Curie is also a founding coach of the wrestling little league for youth wrestlers in his area.
    Assistant Coach of the Year
Joe Somerville has been a member of the Jeffersonville Red Devils program for 15 years. Along with his duties as assistant coach at the high school, the History and English teacher is also the head coach for the Jeff Youth Club and serves as club treasurer. In addition, Joe is tournament director for the Jeff Holiday tournament and the Sectional and Regional. Jeffersonville had a freshman class of 25 wrestlers this past season and was able to field full Varsity, 2nd varsity and C-team squads. The Red Devils were IHSAA Sectional champions and Regional runners-up this past season.
Congratulations to both of these men for the success they have brought to their programs and all they do to build our great sport!

AC Computer got a reaction from rookie78 in MVP
AC is similar to Garrett. We don't give a MVW award, but give a BAGUBA of the year, since BAGUBA involves more than just winning. It typically goes to the wrestler who advances the farthest in the tournament, but this year Macklin and Mosser shared it. Macklin placed while Mosser was eliminated Friday night, but Mosser had a better regular season and embodied the personality of a BAGUBA.

If they show up to do some other sport they won't. I mean, it is a wrestling tournament.

I think a bigger question is why do so many teams drop out of a tournament in season? Not honoring contracts makes it really difficult on everybody.

AC Computer reacted to maligned in Drama you didn't realize happened--5 tight matches that decided who will be at Team State
While you were paying attention to the individual tournament the past few weeks, some dramatic matches were going on that earned teams' positions at Team State for next year. Here are 5 situations that earned the individuals' teams their spot:

    Richmond Regional 170 first round:
2-seed Jake Orschell of Franklin County edges 3-seed Hines of New Castle, 8-6.
Without the win, the senior Orschell's team would have tied with Lawrenceburg in Team State qualification points and the tiebreaker would have left FC in the vote-in process.

    LaPorte Sectional 160 consolation match:
Freshman 4-seed Christopher Mays of New Prairie upsets 2-seed Ware of Michigan City by the score of 6-4 with an overtime takedown. If he places 4th, even though he advanced to regional, his team would not have qualified automatically for Team State.

Fort Wayne Semi-State 195 first round:
New Haven Senior Devonte Brown will replay his semi-state 11-7 quarterfinal defeat to Herrera of Kokomo for the rest of his life. But probably unknowingly, he ensured his school's first appearance at Team State when he first beat Carroll's Thomas as a 4-seed over a 1-seed at regional and then earned a hard-fought 8-5 win over Watson of Yorktown in the first round at semi-state.

    Evansville Semi-State 138 first round:
Castle's struggles at semi-state this year have been well-documented. Perhaps less so is the fact that freshman Robert Deters' first round 4-3 nail-biter over Bradburn of Edgewood moved Castle into Team State for the second year in a row as they avoided a crowded 3A vote-in pool.

East Chicago Semi-State: Penn first round:
Penn earned its automatic bid to Team State by the slimmest of margins--1 point. If we look back at the East Chicago semi-state, we find that Light at 106, DeMein at 120, Hochstedler at 195, and Vakalahi at 220 all won very slim decisions in the first round. If any one of those had been a loss, Penn would be waiting out the vote-in process.

AC Computer got a reaction from bwoodjc89 in Brothers
Adams Central has a unique situation this year that may have occurred at other schools. We have four different sets of brothers on the team, Hunter (152) and Parker (113/120) Bates, Nash (220) and Trey (126/132) Brunner, Anthony (120/126) and Logan (106) Mosser, and Dylan (285) and Chandler (195) Schumm . All have at least 10 varsity matches, but when Parker was inserted into the lineup it usually bumped Trey out. All eight brothers wrestled a varsity match together for the first time last Saturday vs. the Perry B team at the Warren Duals and they won 7 of the 8 matches. Their combined record for the season is 165-52. Anyone else have that many different sets wrestle at the same time?

AC Computer got a reaction from Major Ursula in Fred Tone
We'll miss Fred at AC, too. There's been a close bond between the Dwenger and AC wrestling teams for years because of the example Fred set and expected from his wrestlers. An example that has continued through his successors. His gravelly voice will be missed. Whether he was in the stands or at matside you could always find Fred by following the voice. Condolences to the Tone and entire Dwenger family from AC.

AC Computer reacted to grecoref in Mooresville Head Coach Zach Errett selected to referee 2016 Rio Olympic Games!
Zach has been selected by United World Wrestling as one of just 2 USA referees and one of just 50 referees in the world to referee the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. Zach has also been selected as a UWW Instructor. Instructors are the Head Officials at World and Continental Championships. He was 1 of only 9 Instructors in the World, This is Zach's 2nd straight Olympic selection as he worked the 2012 Games in London.

The Olympic selection process can be very stressful. They seem to do it differently each time. As one who has been through it, I can only describe it as survival of the fittest or last man standing. It's not user friendly to say the least.

On the mat Zach is considered to be the best referee in the world, not only by me, but by his peers and the powers that be with UWW. When he is on the mat he gets the big matches as the referee or mat chairman. As young as he is, he's already considered one of the best, if not the best, referee the USA has put on the mat.

    Congratulations my friend!

AC Computer reacted to ENoblewrestling in Experience Running a 10 Team Dual with 9 Teams
You could do three pools of three.  Then have the winners wrestle in a three team pool, the second place teams in a three team pool, and the third place teams in a three team pool.  Then you could wrestle those pools off for placements.  Every team would get four matches, and you would have fairly accurate placements.  I guess it depends on what is more important, accurate placings, getting five matches, everyone getting the same amount of matches?
