Congrats to Crown Point.  Also, congrats to Indiana wrestling.  I’m proud that years ago we came together and made this event happen.  What a day of wrestling.

Huge shot out to Zeke Seltzer for bumping up to take on Mendez.  That alone made the entire event worthwhile.

Lastly, it sucks but we did take our strap down and that’s a team point.   It was the correct call.

I think Sollars wins rather comfortably.  Score may be close but I think Sollars controls it and is never really in danger.  Something along the lines of 5-1

ShawSki reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: West Vigo's Torieonna Buchanan working to make history
    By JEREMY HINES
    Thehines7@gmail.com

Torrieanna Buchanan’s wrestling coach, Brian Otte, gave her a choice about an upcoming tournament. He told her she could wrestle at 106 pounds and probably win the tournament, or she could wrestle at 113 pounds and face a few ranked wrestlers. The decision was an easy one for the West Vigo senior – she wanted to face the ranked guys.

“I want to wrestle all the ranked kids I can in my weight class,” Buchanan said. “Even if I get beat by them, they’re going to make me a better wrestler. You don’t get better wrestling kids you know you can beat. I want to wrestle the ones that are up there, that are going to push me the most.”

That mindset is what has fueled Buchanan since she started wrestling at just 4-years-old. She challenges herself to get better every day. That’s led her to three consecutive girls state titles. She also became West Vigo’s first-ever female to reach the IHSAA semistate tournament.

“Torrie never backs down from anything,” Otte said. “She is willing to outwork anyone. She’s not been treated as a girl ever in our room. She proves herself every single day.”

For Buchanan, the key to her success is in her technique. She believes her strength will help her compete against girls, but it’s her technique that gives her the edge against the guys.

“I really have to rely on technique,” Buchanan said. “Technique is the most important thing to me. You can have strength, but the person with the better technique is going to win almost every time. Technique has helped me more than anything else.”

Coach Otte also believes Buchanan’s mental toughness is the key to her success.

“Her best strength is her mental toughness,” Otte said. “She’s one of the toughest kids I’ve ever been around, mentally. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to become better. She trains here in the spring and summer, then she’ll go over to Red Cobra and train with Coach Red on the same day. She’s willing to work harder than anyone else.”

That work ethic helped her with her college search as well. She has committed to wrestle for Campbellsville University. There she will wrestle for Coach Lee Miracle, the father of one of the wrestlers Buchanan has been a fan of for a long time – Kayla Miracle.

Miracle was on hand when Buchanan signed with Campbellsville. She was also there when Buchanan tried out for the World Team.

“She talked to me and told me I need to have fun in wrestling,” Buchanan said. “I need to go out there with the mentality that I want to win. She talked about not cutting wait and being the best version of me that I can be.”

Miracle is one of the wrestlers Buchanan has always looked up to. She is the only female in Indiana to qualify for the state tournament, a goal Buchanan says would be her dream.

“I really want to win girls state for the fourth time,” Buchanan said. “But I also want to make a run for boys state. I know Kayla was the last girl to make it to Friday night, and I want to make it past Friday night.”

Buchanan has changed her perspective on her losses this season. In the past she would get frustrated at losing. Now she uses those losses to learn how to do better the next time.

“I used to think that I sucked after a loss,” she said. “Now I take them as a win and I learn from them. They make me get better. The next time I wrestle the same kid, I’m hoping I can learn from that loss and go out and beat them.”

Buchanan would like to get into coaching after college, and ultimately would love to represent the United States at the Olympic level.

“She’s a great kid,” Otte said. “You really couldn’t ask for anything better. My wife and I call her one of our daughters. She’s polite and willing to help anyone with anything. She’s been raised right.

“She’s the only girl in our room but she’s also the one that I use to demonstrate any move I’m teaching. She’s a leader on our team.”

The Sollars used to live up here and train in TheCounty.

They moved south. I saw Mr. And Mrs. Sollars at a meet at EMD after the move. They are genuinely the nicest people that I have ever met... I mean... so nice of that if you didn’t know them you would think that nobody is that nice. Mr.Sollars expressed that fact that it has always been his dream to own a hog farm. Dude bought a hog farm! With all of that said.... Gabe is the nicest hog farm country boy in all of southern Indiana.

County strong from the nicest family out there.

Another great match for Sollars and Mater Dei. Gabe has wanted this since his freshman season. He watched Matt Lee win his freshman year and Blake Boarman and Eli Dickens get one of their own last season. I think he decided it was his turn. He is alot of fun to watch.

I find the whole "down year" and "recruiting" notions preposterous when talking about EMD. They have always had the best JV in the state and have always had a top flight varsity team as far back as my mind can recall.  The only thing that would alarm me is if they suddenly started to hover toward or go below the bottom of the top ten teams in the state.

First and foremost, another great season wrestlers. Thank you and to our Seniors, I wish you the best in your next journey. You have not disappointed.

106- ACTION Jackson was all business from the get go. This sophomore is going to be fun to watch the next couple years.

113- 4X time state placer and now 2X time CHAMP wasn’t about to be denied. Junior Ruble wrestles hard and as a junior, we will see him again next year for some more excitement.

120-Great hand fighting while on their feet. But Lemley was just too much on top. He had over 3:00 ride time against a solid Frazier.

126-One of the most solid wrestlers collects himself another title. Seltzer was too much for a talented Schoeff whos now been under the lights as a freshman and sophomore.

132-As a southern Indiana guy, this was a tough one for me. One side wanted me to have Freeman win for us southsiders, but I’m not one bit disappointed seeing Montgomery finally put his name in the books. I’ve enjoyed watching him at SS each year. His intro during the face offs showed just how excited he was. I don’t know him personally but you CANT love or root against  a kid with that type of character. Best of luck to both he and Freeman on their next journey.

    138-MENDEZ MENDEZ MEMDEZ
What more can be said other than we are witnessing history again. As only a junior, he’s coming back to join such a small rank in Indiana rich wrestling history. Also coming back is his competitor, sophomore Ruhlman. Great job getting under the lights kiddo.

145-Zionsville collects their very 1st school CHAMP in Wagner who just had a bigger gas tank. Watson came out strong but couldn’t keep up the pace that Wagner was forcing. No knock on Watson.

152- Conway and Ellis has some great scrambles and the 3rd period didn’t disappoint. But they needed extra time to settle the score and Conway gets the takedown and his name in the books. Great match

160- Quite possibly the most exciting match of the night. We seen all the tricks in this epic battle. Some great scrambles. Just when we thought Baumann was going to ease through the match, Majors counters with a spladle or a key lock. Only to see Baumann battle through it to throw a mean lat  drop and secure not only his 1st title but clinched the Team title for EMD. EPIC EPIC BATTLE gentlemen.

170- Here we have our 2nd High school East Central  capturing their 1st CHAMP. HALL didn’t waste much time and secured the fall in under a minute vs a stout Morril.

182- Sollars was on a mission and showed his SS win in the battle of the unbeaten vs Buchanan wasn’t a fluke. Solid riding with knee blocks helped keep Buchanan grounded. Great news for us fans, they’re both only Juniors and we get to see one more year of them.

195- And yet another school Indianapolis Luthern captures their first CHAMP. FILIPOVICH is a stud and bested another hammer in Carrington. For some big fellas, they were very athletic and had a lot of exciting scrambles.

220- what a display by Ruhlman. Who has jumped 3 weight classes, 50 lbs and comes in to put his name in the record books like Ruhlman just did. I know there’s been wrestlers picking up 15-20 lbs but NOT 50. Am I wrong on this one.   Not only did he capture the title, but finished UNBEATEN.

285- Tye big fellas put on a great show. Some power was shown in throws. Athleticism and balance for 285 was put  on display in some scrambles  And they battled till the final whistle. OL IndianaMats own @Y2CJ41had his big man ready to sit at the top. Muncie comes out in top but I think all us fans win here.

In the end, we had 3 schools capture their FIRST EVER School CHAMP.

While we’re going to be losing some GREAT Seniors, Indiana wrestling is solid right now. We seen some PHENOMENAL wrestling from freshmen sensations like Ison, Leavell, May, Demarco, Tishner.
Then a plethora of Sophomore studs.

Thank to the coaches and parents during this troubled year(Covid) to help make all this happen. Job well done.
