Totally misses those kids that fill in during bumps that fight off the pins or pull an upset. Not the true essence of the dual aspect that you would have wrestling in an actual dual meet. Plus those schools like CP or MD that the backups are probably state qualifiers to champs behind other state qualifiers or champs at their weight. Yeah it's better than nothing by going off individual results. Just rather see team state dual qualifiers come from winning prior rounds of duals in a tournament format like football, basketball, baseball, and etc.

Wish the IHSAA would help and not count the event towards the competition points as I believe they still do(correct me if I'm wrong). I'd love for it to be like football & etc with sectionals/regional to earn a spot at state (top 8/12 teams per class) in an actual dual tournament instead of basing it on individual tournament results. Duals and individual tournaments are so different. Criteria for teams being those filling 8 weight classes.

I’d say this goes with the late bloomers topic. Joey Cline came in as a freshman having never wrestled and was our starting 106 weighing 84 lbs he won like 3 matches that year. Now as a senior he’s ranked 20th at 113

My son is the JV kid from Owen Valley you mentioned. His name is Kacey Orman. It is amazing to see him being recognized for his hard work and determination. He has never let his disability get in the way of whatever he wants to do. He always finds a way!

That argument will keep being confusing to people since there is already 25% of 4A taken and only 12.5% of the other three classes. You get special privileges as it is because we all acknowledge that almost every one of the 10 best duals teams overall will be in 4A. And even if Cathedral and EMD weren't involved, 6 of the 32 remaining is still 19%--higher chances than any other class.

It's a sad reality of our severely limited system that the lower enrollment schools in all 4 classes qualify much less than the ones at the top of their division--no matter where the lines are drawn. Until we have an all-in model, people at the edges of qualification scoring or the edges of classification numbers will feel frustrated.

Tell me why wrestling isn't truly classified as 2 sports in one? The individual aspect is much different than the team aspect in duals. Much different than XC or tennis to compare. The bumping & shifting of the lineup truly sets it apart. Why I'll die on the hill & continue to beat the dead horse that the IHSAA allows it to be it's own tournament not affecting the scheduling points. That tournament would be all in and classed. Only stipulation would be having to fill 8 spots of the 14 for a match. It's time to get it done! No one has a legitimate gripe that way!

My one wish for the state finals is not bracket related. It would be to have the walk of champions with the entire group of qualifiers. I overheard one of my wrestlers talking to a teammate saying we have been teammates since 1st grade and I wish we could walk together. One is first session and one is second.

90% of the FF were at the very bottom or very top. Weights added would mostly be between 100 and 195 which would be easier to fill.

We (whiteland) considered this event this year, we probably would've finished middle of the pack.  We went down to the wire with Perry last week in a dual.  One of the reasons we opted not to compete was most of central indiana wrestles 22 weight classes for middle school and this event only had 17 weights.

As a team with a majority above average kids, it hurts us when you cut out 5 weights where other teams with hammers can spread their kids out.  Every team that entered is 3a-4a for wrestling except one they should have no issue filling weights.  If the goal is to increase participation and find the best "team" cutting out 5 weight classes makes about zero sense.

I think you all are talking about two totally different things. One - facts, two - social graces. Let's move this away from boys/girls and weight classes, since that seems controversial. My kid wrestles in one of the weaker regionals in the state. That's a fact, the statistics over the years on state qualifiers/placements bear this out and I acknowledge that. However, I would be pretty pissed if someone walked up to him right after winning regionals and told him that he wouldn't even make it out of sectionals if we lived elsewhere. Even if they're right! You could make the same argument comparing a state title in Indiana vs. a stronger/weaker state, or the same weight class being stronger/weaker from one year to the next. Someone always has it easier/harder than another person. Everyone knows that, just don't be a jerk about it or intentionally try to diminish someone's accomplishments because of it.

There are 25 ranked wrestlers per each weight class; if all SS's were evenly weighted they would average 6.25 ranked wrestlers per weight.  Based on historical data, the rankings are incredibly accurate, an assumption can be made from the #'s which weights are going to be the toughest at each SS.

I can't argue your data.  It's just frustrating.  That is why I think a regional qualifier would solve a lot of problems.  This year for us we had a senior at 106 and a Freshman backup that had beat him in a wrestle off once.  They were not that far apart.  We will not get the points that he would have received had he been our starter at sectional.  We had underclassmen at several weights that would have scored more "team points" toward a team state bid but there is no way to gain those.  I didn't mean to come across angry at the people working tirelessly to help this great sport and the Team State tourney.  I love it and am grateful to those that work so hard to make it happen.  I would just like to see teams wrestle to earn it.  I would be the 2nd to sign up if they had a qualifying tournament.  It would be nice to see how our team stacks up against these elite 1A schools next year.

They need a qualifier, one that is well planned and rolled out to the public in plenty of time to schedule.

Moving up in an age group should be allowed during High School season with 14U wrestlers.  I understand the idea behind it but disagree with it during HS season.  16u wrestlers are in 8th grade. 14u are mostly middle school if not all in Middle School.  Elementary Duals can have a 6th Grader wrestle a 2nd grader which is also an ISWA event.  I would love to see ISWA change the rule during HS wrestling season.  Some middle school programs do not even start wrestling until the end of January, and finding matches can be hard.  My son doesn't go to many tournaments but the 2 we have been to have only had a handful of kids in the 16u division.  He doesn't have a great birthday for wrestling I guess.  I would just like to know others thoughts on this.  Maybe I am just looking at from a Dads perspective.

1A/2A should have 24 schools and do a 2-day tourney over the holidays!  Problem solved (until 50 other schools think they should be 24th!)

I am guessing this would never happen, but I really like the idea of having the small schools having a regional qualifier.  I am assuming that finding 10 1A schools from each region would not be that difficult to do.  I would also guess that finding a school to host it wouldn't be that difficult either.  I think that it would do wonders for small schools. I think it would increase the amount of kids that would take an interest in wrestling as well as bring more attention to the wrestling team within their school.  Take the top 4 from each region and that becomes your state dual.  I love the sport of wrestling because it seems to me to be that most fair sport there is.  Everything that you get you've earned.  I think determining state teams isn't comparing apples to apples.  I appreciate the effort that goes in to try to make it fair but it's not.  Have teams go head-to-head and earn their spot.  Set criteria for entering the tournament.  Must have 11 weight classes filled.  I think that would knock out most of the small schools and it would be easy to select the ones for the regional tournament.  Break the regionals up by Semi-States.  If a 1A School goes through East Chicago and has 11 weight classes filled then they are eligible to enter the tournament.  I also think that would be a great tournament to wrestle in anyway regardless if that team qualifies for State or not.  Then the teams like Frankton, Cascade, Alexandria, Winimac, Faith Christian, Sheridan, Indianapolis Lutheran, Southmont, Freemont, Bremen, South Adams ect...  I think the list could go on.  Let them earn it head to head.  I would guess most teams wouldn't have a problem with wrestling two weekends in great competitive tournaments.  Just a thought
