2 4th's, Jaden Reynolds was wrestling for Red Cobra. Bailey McKivitz was 7th wrestling for Contenders. Andrew Frank got 6th. so I see at least 3 Champs, 4 runner ups, 1 3rd, 2 4th's, 1 6th, 1 7th and 3 8th's for Avon kids this weekend. 

The little guys did well last weekend also. With 3 champs, 2 runners up, 2 thirds, 1 fourth, and 3 sevenths. Lots of hardware for the Avon School District over the last two weekends (26 medals with 12 wrestlers in the finals). Big thanks to the high school staff, coach Parrish and coach Red for working with the kids. They are blessed to have all of you here within the community.

Sports these days is very sports specific and it most likely is hurting the numbers. 
 
Just wait till Freestyle state when then numbers drop below half of what it was last year.  My boy won't even be able to go for the triple crown.  Damn shame

My family was talking about some of the teams that Ty has been on and all the familiar names that we saw at State this past weekend.  I went back to look at Ty’s first National Elementary team and was amazed at the talent that Indiana sent to Kingsport between Team Red Cobra, Indiana Brawlers and the Indiana Elite.  Although some of these kids are no longer wrestling in Indiana, the majority of them are all still wrestling and doing so at a very high level. 
 
Years ago, I remember looking at some of these types of pics when the teams included Escobedo, Tsirtsis, etc.  For all the families that have youth wrestlers attending these events in the coming months, sit back and enjoy the ride...
 

 

 

 

This senior class were not even kindergartners when ARon Bright and Sam Ruff started club in 2000. I met Kevin Helm in the wrestling room that next year, Quinn and Brenden already knew each other from preschool. From there with Kevin doing the coaching and me taking on the parents, we took over the smallest kids in the club and made a concentrated effort to get every kid in their grade that we could to come out for wrestling. With in 5 years we had almost 150 kids signed up Coach Williams had taken over HS program at that point and Kevin joined HS staff as well as coaching little guys. We really took off after that runner up season for the HS we built on that team concept as well as Lynn's state championship. Had some dads who were willing to give their time (Rassbach, Luce, Kaiser, KAlishand now Brewer, McLain and countless others) was not over night success and the elite clubs helped us take our club to another level, when Ryan started Contenders a lot of our really good kids went to him because he was training year around and catered to the advanced kids where we were still showing basics. My goal in the early days was to make sure the kids didn't bring home the basketball sign up sheets from school cause wrestling was more fun. When Blevins came on broad the club was doing well and he jumped right in and has made sure that we continue to move forward. The last five years have been very rewarding from my stand point of being involved when my son was sometimes the only Avon kid at a tournment to now when we generally have 20-30 kids wrestling every weekend. Can't be done with out the moms and dads who are willing to give their time and efforts. The future is very bright and with the continued efforts of Coach and his staff and the parents who have stepped up and the ones who will down the road Avon should be claiming a team and some individual titles in the years to come.

Tyler Mills caught fire and had an awesome state tournament, he just ran into a buzz saw named Cummings.
 
Shame Brayton Lee lost in SS he seemed to be on the precipice of a big year. What grade will he be in next year?

Next year I think there will be more. 7 that metaled will be back. Miranda AV and Gomez PL will be back as State qualifiers. Lee BB, Weaver BB, Henson AV lost in ticket round at SS and will be back. Avon also has 4 MS State Champs entering HS next year along with 5-8 other elite 8th graders. Helm AV, Elmore AV and Caudle DV will be gone. 

My two cents on this topic as I fielded a lot of questions on Sunday about this situation. I agree with Mattyb on this separation criteria. Bottom line cream rises to top but top two place winners wrestling first round is not good. (I.e 95lb weight) those two both placed in last years tournament and should not have wrestled first round. 75lb had two ISWA state champs wrestling first round in which loser wrestled all the way back to true second as well. I think if we weight age divisions in criteria it muddies the water a little. At least separate based on Mattyb criteria so no first round match ups. Track seeding is not a good tool as of now because you can alter your kids results. I am sure one day soon it will be a good tool to separate but just not now. As I said earlier cream rises to the top eventually you just might have to wrestle 14 matches to do so. Overall great tournament with great competition.

To add to that. It becomes a safety issue. We had studs meet the first round. Some of the losers in those matches wrestled back for true second. That gave them 10 or 11 matches on the day. That would have been prevented if seeding was used.
 
With all of this said, Coach Peck we do appreciate what you do. Please do not take this as bashing the tournament. It is great. Your tournament has provided my family great joy that we wont soon forget. Just throwing out ideas on a message board.

Impressive showing by the Hendricks County Schools. Lots of solid wrestlers from Avon, B-Burg, Danville.

No offense taken to any of this.  I like to hear feedback and I really feel everyone that has commented so far has done it in a positive manner, and with the best of intentions.  We can always do better.  One of the reasons the tournament has improved over the years is because we have noticed things that need to be improved, and because people have made suggestions for improvement.

Maybe this could be the seeding criteria:
 
1. Returning middle school state champ
2. Returning middle school state placer
3. ISWA folkstyle schoolboy state champ
4. ISWA folkstyle schoolboy top 4 placer
5. ISWA folkstyle novice state champ
6. ISWA folkstyle novice top 4 placer
 
If you have none of these you go unseeded. From being there the last three years, I think this would give us fair brackets.

After spending all day in New Castle yesterday for what was a great day of wrestling, I wanted to post a few thoughts. Overall a very good tournament but as a parent there were a few things that bothered me.
 
1) Why state that your weigh-ins would close 2-12-15 when they really closed on 2-14-15. Not what the flyer says and not what's listed on the website. In fact, somewhere it was listed weigh-ins would close Thursday 2-11-15, which was clearly a misprint.
2) In the past, this event was seeded using a wrestlers Trackwrestling profile ranking. This was clearly not done.
3) When I registered my wrestler I read the flyer regarding the criteria for determining a Team Champion, the flyer stated the Champion would be determined by using only the top 6 placers in each weight class earning points for their school. It appears that changed somewhere along the way.
4) A wrestler was overweight by .1, left the room and was allowed to weigh-in again, this time making weight. I don't care but this did happen.
 
I hate to sound so negative about a really good tournament but I think a lot of this could be avoided with better communication.
 
1) I don't care when you close registration, just state it clearly, ahead of time and don't change it.
2) If you're going to blind draw the brackets, ok, just let us know. 
3) I don't care how you determine a Team Champion but once you decide on a criteria don't change it. In my opinion, have it mirror how the IHSAA now determines the High School Team State Champion.
4) There needs to be clearly defined rules for weigh-in procedures. This way everybody's aware of the guidelines ahead of time and they're not open to interpretation.
 
Aside from my above comments, I want to say thanks to the IHSWCA for running this tournament. The future of Indiana wrestling looks very bright after what I saw yesterday!

Are you kidding me? Nick Lee is pound for pound the best wrestler. I have a question for you James wrestled Red in the off season and won do you know what weight class that was at? 132! Why didn't James wrestle it this off season? Why is James nationally ranked at 132? And by the way he is also ranked well under Nick on the rankings as well. Just my opinion but Nick Lee has yet to see competition and James has seen it this year.

Thanks Coach Williams! I am sure all 4 of them (Trey Lane, Asa Garcia, Nathan Conley and Carson Brewer) will be sad once the season is done this year. Great Coach to push them everyday and takes times to spend 13 hours with them this past weekend. A great team and a great program to be apart of. Also thanks to Coach Blevins who spent all day at Evansville Semi State and then comes to spend a long day at Middle Schoolers. Thanks to all the Avon coaches that help at MS State

Thank you Coach . Been a FAN-Tastic year so far. This success started back in the Avon Wrestling Club and is carrying over to the Middle School years and next year spill over to Avon HS . Just think this is only the first wave coming thur....

Great job to Perry and Avon! I am also so proud of team Shenandoah who came in 3rd! They had an unbelievable day of wrestling, bringing 16 wrestlers (some for the very first time) and each one of them wrestling at a high level. These boys gave it their all!!! Some winning big matches and some losing by just a point. Either way, it was one enjoyable day watching the Raiders all day long!!!! I was also extremely proud that the whole team stayed till the end to watch 2 of their wrestlers in the championship matches and 4 more wrestlers wrestling to get on the podium. Great job Raiders!!!!!!

Just wanted to take the time to say how proud I am of this group of wrestlers this year. Not only the success on the mat but off as well. It is a truly special set of eighth graders that I will be sad to see go. Very proud of you guys going 4 for 4 in the finals and even more proud of the compliments and praise I get from other schools athletic departments on your attitudes and sportsmanship. Keep up the good work!
