  1. That’s precisely what I meant. Regardless of the process and being “assigned” a place, never winning state and being a participant at the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS seems pretty incredible.
  2. World placer Alex Dolly. Indiana 5, 3, 2 2001 lost to eventual 2 by 1 point. 2002 lost to eventual champ by 1 point. 2003 match of the century.
  3. For people who don’t make it this far north often, please be advised: not all Penn people are certifiably insane.
  4. As far as this year, Jeffrey Huyvaert won 50 matches, his losses were to #1, #2, and #3 (two of which are Big Ten wrestlers), finished 4th, and beat the state champion.
  5. Completely unbiased take: that was the best year at State.
  6. Gimme Huyvaert in round 3!!
  7. A few around here that, despite not having the numbers of a big school, have kids in the mix nearly every year are Chris Fleeger, Steve Sandefer, and Jerimiah Maggart. Very impressed with how much they get out of kids.
  8. It’s been made clear by the IHSAA that the purpose of the tournament is to crown a champion. This system does that. TBH, I’m surprised they even bother with 3rd-8th place matches at state.
  9. If I were a betting man, how many points are you giving me on Huyvaert vs Solomey?
  10. Mishawaka is nuts for not selling tickets to this. Goldmine.
  11. One could make the claim: if the Griffith guys would have wrestled in Illinois instead of Indiana, Mater Dei would have had 7 champions.
  12. Sarah was 112 lbs in 2011, her senior year.
  13. If you ever want an anti-weight cutting tutorial, ask Steve. He will convert anyone!
  14. well done! 8 for us, also a school record!
  15. Awesome! Coach Flatt is a phenomenal ambassador for our sport!
  16. Penn had 5 in the sectional line up, all 5 got through, and 3 are going to East Chicago. (And that doesn’t include the one in your top 10 list) Love this class!
  17. The fact that Nick Lee can’t make this list after bonusing all but two opponents in 3 years shows how ungodly tough this state can be.
  18. Jonathan Lloyd 2004 SC at 103 from Warren Central had to be 6’ tall.
  19. Assuming he doesn’t follow the Nick Lee path and find something better to do with his time his senior year. I hope that’s not the case, he’s fun to watch.
