Remy is going to accomplish things in his life that make wrestling & football accolades seem trivial. In fact, he's already begun. In time....he'll have a deeper understanding of that truth. Very proud of your family's acceptance of God's will, and outspoken zeal. My family and I will continue lifting all of you up in prayer. And as far as fishing goes.......I have access to some unbelievable bass waters (old stone quarries) that regularly produce 5-8lb hogs. We introduced smallmouth to the lake about 7yrs ago and they're also thriving. Not uncommon to catch 3-4lb smallies as well. Case and point, get with me in the coming weeks and we'll link up and boat some fish, allow Silas and Remy to hang out.......and I'll share with you my baseball background and see if we can't get Remy interested in potentially throwing 90 in 4yrs.

Dear wrestling fans family and community. I am Corbin Bultemeier the father of Remington who was injured in a freak incident December 4th. We want to thank everyone in the wrestling community as well as Indiana Mat for the overwhelming support for Remy during this traumatic time. It has simply been amazing what prayers have done for him during his recovery. In the post below I will post his most report from Dr's today. Thanks again and God Bless you all! If you would like to follow the journey feel free to search and friend me on Facebook. I will gladly give you the opportunity follow along as his life changes directions. God put a sharp turn in the road but it wasn't a dead end.

Well we were able to meet with Remington's neurosurgeon, Dr. Fulkerson today. He reminded Remy that he was a very lucky young man....many with such injuries end up in wheelchairs. He was extremely pleased with Remy's progress and his x-rays looked great!

Unbelievably, Dr. Fulkerson released Remy without restrictions! Yes, after expecting Remy to be out of all activities for 1 entire year, he released him before we could even ask him what the future restrictions would be and how long. That includes skiing and tubing at the lake this summer (without kamikaze actions), shooting a gun for Turkey season, shooting archery for bow fishing as well as leading his new hunting dog Cabela and 4H animals.

As you can see, we have tried to focus on the positive side of the other activities that Remy enjoys. He's been Blessed in so many ways!

The one tough discussion that Remy had today was Dr. Fulkerson explaining the risk of impact sports in Remington's future. He explained that as an individual of a sports family and a son of a former coach, he recognizes the importance of sports in a young athletes life. He said he knows it's "everything" in the first 18 yrs. but emphasized the ability to be productive for the following 80 yrs. He explained that he can't totally say no to football and wrestling but stongly feels they should be out. He feels that the risk is too great for the reward since Remy's neck has lost so much of its ability to absorb the shock in such sports.

At this point, we don't have to go back to Indy until December. At that time, we will discuss whether the rods will stay in permanently or whether Remy will need to have surgery to remove them. His neck will be healed enough at that point that they won't be necessary and removing them will depend on how Remy's body tolerates them as he increases his level of activity. In this case, Remy will have time to see how he is able to function with them on a daily basis.

Again, God and his earthly healing hand, known as Dr. Fulkerson have been amazing with Remy in this journey. Not only did they save his life but restored his mobility in just 3 months. We truly believe the unceasing prayers from all of you have helped guide the healing hands of Dr. Fulkerson as he put Remington' s broken body back together. We will be forever be indebted to all that have supported us in this endeavor. Thanks again and God Bless all of you!

I'm definitely very sorry if I've come across as defensive at any time. I genuinely hope we can go to an all-in tournament sometime in the near future. I also genuinely believe a strong voting body, for example, could do a great job to select all teams. And I really do enjoy thinking through the process to find ways to improve it. I quote the accuracy numbers not to toot my own horn or the selection committee's, but rather in the communal sense of "let's be sure there's something really broken here or let's find the element that's truly problematic before we make a significant change just because it 'feels' off."
I admit I've played my part in dragging out this topic because there's an element of what regional Categories are trying to accomplish that I feel you and a couple others are missing because you think the Categories are somehow an overall quality label in the traditional sense--which they're not. They are designed as one element of allowing the scoring to be as correctly predictive as possible. They will be less so if we use the ideas you and MudFlap have suggested and apply them to how categories are currently used. I've outlined why that is the case but people are still thinking of the Categories as a "ranking" rather than the tool they are. I hope that makes sense. I have nothing but respect for your knowledge and insights on all topics on this forum. Your comments on this thread and every other are always must-read.

Good point, but this is where I think you  and even Mike aren't missing the point.     In you're example is based on who get through to the state tournament.  You're argument is based on the state tournament qualifiers.   Fact:  only 5% of the wrestlers qualify for state.   So the other 95% of wrestlers also make up dual teams.  Its like lets ignore those guys.  The whole point process quantifies the whole team not just the 5%, or also said in another way:  You can have a good dual team, but not as a  great tournament team.    I really don't see you guys  are appreciating that factor.

So you think the mathematical evidence that has put them in the scoring range to go to IHSWCA is not legitimate, and Harrison is not deserving.     Please tell me your not on the "committee of power", because were screwed then.

On the Calumet regional.  The top wrestlers  are on par with Perry, Mooresville and Castle.  Both those regionals have a significantly higher level of depth and much more difficult to qualify.     The preponderance of evidence shows this.  You have to admit numbers aren't biased.

There's no average used in any way. Please look again at my earlier post. Each team's expected qualifiers are added together to give a depth total. For example, the 12 expected from Portage and 9.5 from Merrillville and 0.1 from the lowest teams are simply totaled, thus giving full powerful weight to the big teams. We then divide that total expected qualifiers number by 14 weight classes to give a per-weight-class total and you've got your category.

Everyone won't get a trophy, actually no one gets a trophy in the state tournament.

Based on NFHS data 3.2% of our wrestlers go to state, double that...and we still aren't even close to "everyone getting a trophy."

Hobart had  some big hitters, but I think Harrison would have similar amount of qualifiers if out of Calumet.   Harrison would of lost 2 or 3  qualifers  in Calumet, but keep in mind for team state,  Harrison lost semi-state points as they had 2 4th place finishers.   Hobart got 7 to SS.    Calumet Regional is good because of Merrillville and Portage,  but it drops off significantly after that.   Compare the teams after the big two.  Look at Maligned's post.

If looking at duals, Harrison had a more balanced dual team  than Hobart which is reflected in the genius rating.   If its an argument, Harrison has 13 starters back, and they had there best Varsity B team they've had.  They'll be legit next year.

I got mixed feelings on Boiler Elite.   It wasn't like they were churning out champions.    And the problem with Boiler Elite was it wasn't like the academies.   It was a couple of volunteer coaches making some extra cash, and they weren't vested in the wrestlers.   My kid went through it and the coaches didn't go watch them at tournaments or even coerce kids to go to tournaments.   They didn't have the follow up from week to week to make sure each kid was progressing, and the coaches were interested in high level college wrestling, not the mundane basics of teaching a new 11 year old how to wrestle.      Interesting thing now is that there are now 4 clubs in Tippy county at each of the major high schools.  Between the 4 clubs,  easily over 100 kids participating in wrestling  and going to tournaments.   Boiler Elite maybe had 20 to 25 at most.

I've had as many issues with the system as anyone, including the committee and their selections, but saying that the composition of the committee plays a part in the categories being lower for Northwest Indiana just shows a lack of understanding of the system and how the categories are developed.

Mike, you're still focused on top-level results--not bottom-end crowdedness. The number of state qualifiers from a regional does not tell us how good the 4th, 5th, and 6th guys at a regional are. It only tells us how good the top 1 or 2 are.

Here is the breakdown of expected semi-state qualifiers for Calumet and Logansport by team, based on their full-season quality from 2016-17. Which team's projected semi-state qualifier estimate is wrong, in terms of how many they would have in a down-the-middle, average regional?

I do agree that, at least to me, this is the best argument for class wrestling.  I'm not convinced it would work, and think maybe there are other methods.  But, I respect your and Joe's and Galagore's and other proponents passion for helping the small school wrestlers to better opportunities

If Indiana does end up going to a class-level wrestling at the individual level, I'd support it 100%.  Sure, there would be those times when we'd all like to see the 1A vs 2A champ square off, but hopefully the benefits would outweight the what-if musings

Exposure is the only argument I need for class wrestling - much better than current stats or future estimated stats.  Class wrestling will benefit multiple things...

#1 College Recruitment.  Benefits start Year 1.  College coaches (DI, DII, DIII, & JuCo) first look at achievements of sophomores and juniors.  Unless you're already an all-american, that is only going to include state achievements.  Small school wrestlers from other states tend to get those achievements earlier in high school, which gets them looked at earlier by college coaches.  Most college coaches consider your senior year too late to start recruiting.  More exposure earlier in high school will mean more college offers for our small school wrestlers, some of whom might not have considered wrestling in college as an option.

#2 Youth Participation.  Benefits won't show for a few years.  When a program has state champs, state placewinners, and state qualifiers year after year, it is much easier to grow your youth program.  Kids like to see the success and continue the tradition.  That's been a huge factor for Mater Dei, Bellmont, Yorktown, etc.  With class wrestling you will see more small schools start to build their own legacy.

#3 Future Coaches.  Benefits won't show for several years.  One thing that is holding us back as a state from getting to the next level is a lack of high school coaches with college wrestling experience.  I'd be surprised if more than half of our head coaches wrestled in college.  If we can get more of our wrestlers competing in college, then some of them will come back and coach high school, junior high, or youth clubs.  That will improve our overall quality of wrestling.

Here is one of the things that made me change my mind to support class wrestling a few years ago.  Yes, initially it will be much easier for a small school wrestler that is overall an average wrestler to qualify, place or even win state in a classed system.  As those things become a more real possibility for these wrestlers, don't you think that competition for that state championship would increase? As it becomes more possible for kids to chase that championship, more kids start working harder for it, increasing the level of wrestling at small schools.
