I'm so glad those teams that enter 3-6 wrestlers are included in this even though they can't qualify even with all returning champs.

Come on, that's just untrue. They determine what regional 4th placer doesn't score for his team while a phantom fifth placer does.
Incredibly misleading for you to say they have nothing to do with the qualification process.

So time to take a quick break and provide a distraction to the loaded regional and SS talk.
My son is new to the sport...it was a little over a year ago that he decided he wanted to give wrestling a try.  Something about watching kids under the lights at Bankers Life in 2015 provided that spark.  So as a 5th grader he started on his journey.
After a bit of research, we learned about Red Cobra and he’s been in that sweat box ever since...and most nights I’m also spending a few hours listening to Coach Red bark instructions to all the kids.
Now true confession time...I never wreslted myself and frankly thought wrestlers were an odd bunch growing up.  One dude I knew in Junior High covered his singlet in deer attractant as an “advantage”.   Another kid claimed to rub onions on his pits and “area”.  I was a basketball player and that was my love...I wasn’t tough enough to wrestle even though I considered myself a tough guy.  So needless to say, I knew next to nothing when my kid started and know just a tiny bit more now.
More recent confession, during our first few meets man some parents were going insane during a match while I just saw some kids leaning on each other.  My inner monologue said “dude, what’s those people’s issue?  They’re some real nut-jobs.”
Fast forward to today, and a solid year of Coach Red training has not only helped my kid but also his old man that’s been sweating profusely on the other side of the partition while Coach Red instructs like only he can.  What I didnt know is that I was getting C-Red Trained too.   Now I find myself automatically and instinctively barking stuff like “Get Your HEAD UP!!!” And “UP AND OUT!!!” Or “GET THAT TIGHT AND SQUUUEEEEZE!!!” Or “God gave you two hands SO USE THEM!!”  Its like I can’t control it.
So to all you parents before that I was secretly being real judgey towards in my head, because y’all were losing your minds (or so I thought)...my bad.
To all you beginner parents wondering why the big dude in purple is losing his mind in the future....you’ll get it one day.
One thing I’ve learned while my boy has really embraced and taken to this sport and the process...if you’re the parent of one of these high schoolers that’s putting it all out there in the coming weeks, then really be proud of it and where you are.  Make sure to take a moment and take it in.  Be proud they’re there regardless of outcome. Unlike any other, wrestling is an awesome sport that requires some real courage to even walk out there on that mat.  Sometimes it takes the eyes of a newbie to bring the obvious into focus.
Good luck to all competitors and teams as each step gets a little tougher.  I’m glad I’m here...and I’m glad my son has chosen to be a wrestler.

I know that many schools will run out some second and third string kids when wrestling a lesser team. It gives those kids a chance to get some varsity experience and allows your opponent to actually have a chance to get better as well (not just pinned in a few seconds). Really a win / win for both teams.
I realize that there is no perfect system and this most likely is the best we got. I guess a good way to ensure that you make it to team state is to pound weaker teams every chance you can. Hate to see this, but see no way around it.

Id recommend a computer to view as I am not sure how the mobile experience will be....you should be able to click on each sectional and the list of schools and my border should pop up

Over all it looks pretty good with only a few head scratchers.....

Last night I attended the Tom Clark Celebration of Life.  It was a VERY inspiring evening, with the wrestling family coming together and making me very proud to be a member of that family.  Tom obviously touched many, many lives in his relatively short time in our state, but the turnout for the celebration was very impressive. There were literally officials from all 4 corners of the state and a significant number of Tom's international brotherhood of officials.  Perhaps most impressive was the turnout of coaches last night.  That support of the official community by the coaches does not go unnoticed, young coaches, old(er) coaches, and one even wore wrestling shoes and a whistle.....  in brotherhood with Tom.

The one and only metric that matters in evaluating the system as a whole is accuracy in getting the best teams from the following season into the event. Again, because we  are giving huge points for semi-state second round and state advancement AT SEMI-STATE, we are strictly and only concerned with assigning those points for advancing to the round of 64 (first round of semi-state) correctly at regional. For this, we have to look at each site's comprehensive crowdedness in the Round of 256 (essentially sectional) and the Round of 128 (first round of regional). Once we've assigned those Round of 64 points correctly, we move on and give big points for the Round of 32 (semi-state 2nd round) and the Round of 16 (state qualification) the FOLLOWING WEEK.

Here are the metrics we care about in evaluating how well we've assigned points throughout the system from sectional non-placer through state champion:

2016-17 Season-Ending Duals Top 10s (one year after the scoring system is used):

    3A
    1. Brownsburg-invited
    2. Perry-invited
    3. Avon-invited
    4. Portage-invited
    5. EMD-invited
    6. Penn-invited
    7. Cathedral-lost at vote-in, but the system had them 11th
    8. Castle-invited
    9. Carroll-invited
    10. Carmel-invited
(if selection committee had "guessed" correctly, all 10 of the season-ending top 10 would have been at the event. They took Chesterton and Columbus East instead of Cathedral--hard to blame them although we see it was a slight miss.)

    2A
    1. Yorktown-invited
    2. Bellmont-invited
    3. North Montgomery-invited
    4. Edgewood-invited
    5. Evansville Memorial-invited
    6. Jimtown-invited
    7. Garrett-invited
    8. Indian Creek-lost at vote-in; system had them 14th despite 4 FFs at sectional
    9. Southridge-lost at vote-in; system had them 15th
    10. Culver Academies-invited
(Committee took Delta ahead of IC and Southridge; system "error" was #9 Northwood, who lost a returning state qualifier to a move among other attrition.)

    1A
    1. Prairie Hts-invited
    2. Shenandoah-invited
    3. Oak Hill-invited
    4. Monrovia-invited
    5. North Posey-invited
    6. Eastern-lost at vote-in; system had them 13th despite FOUR sectional forfeits
    7. Adams Central-invited
    8. Cass-system had them 20th, with 2 forfeits and returning only 9 (nearly impossible they would qualify because 1A teams with that profile are never top 10 teams the next year)
    9. Knightstown-invited
    10. Central Noble-invited
(By far the most unpredictable class, but the 2 years of the current Category system have been very accurate even in this class.)

Totals: 15 of 15 from the year-later, season-ending Top 5s and 9, 8, and 8 of the Top 10s were invited. Only #8 from 1A, an extremely unpredictable class, was a genuine scoring system miss with no chance to be critiqued deeply and voted in.

I've mentioned this before, but we use a mathematical model that's able to "control" completely for sectional/regional path (i.e. take it out of the picture) and create predictions for the number of regional qualifiers and semi-state qualifiers that teams of any given duals ability should have. We use FOUR SEASONS and 1,225 full season results simultaneously to run this. The fact that deserving teams are being given regional points for 5th or 6th place guys at some sectionals and undeserving teams are not being given semi-state first round points for a regional 4th placer, for example, at some sites is strategically instrumental into why we're able to produce the effective results I've shown above. The continued argument that "who got the most to the Round of 32 or the Round of 16 should be our predictor of which area's Round of 256 and Round of 128 is richer" argument is unfortunately very limited. We've been doing deep research into ways to control for sectional/regional path, including many of the ways people have suggested on this site, for 7 years. We've run lots of past-year tests for comparison and nothing works nearly as intuitively as what we're doing right now for getting the right group of teams into the event.

Imagine a regional weight that has the kids ranked 1st-4th in the state and NOBODY else (just forfeits).  How difficult was it to advance through that regional?  5-8 are extremely important in determining how difficult it is to advance.

All semistate tells you is how well your 4's do against 1's, etc.  That is reflected in the semistate scoring and should not impact the regional.

There is a means to test the accuracy of the model - look at the results of the following year, which is what it is meant to predict.  The creators of this model even went back and tested it on years before team state started and found it's accuracy was very good compared to the following year's results.
