What he did was wrong period. For all the stuff they teach at IOWA if that's the lesson they take from their years there then its the wrong lesson. It just galls me to go to sectional and regional and see someone rip up their 2nd ,3rd or 4th ribbon usually right in front of parents or team mates just to show that they "know" that only first lace counts.
At the state meet the kids who wrestled Robinson and Sliga weren't going to win if they wrestled 10 more times. The kid who was supposed to lose to Micic gave him a hell of a battle and didn't read all the press before the match. A couple of undefeateds go at it at 170 and one loses in the last 30 seconds. Should someone be disappointed after getting that close ? Sure why not but to act out ,I say no. The sport ,the lessons learned, the conditioning and physical confidence it gives young men and women far transcends any levels they may ascend. There are only 14 state champs ,10 national champs, adnd 7 Olympic champions .You only need a couple extra hands and feet to count that on. Strive to be the best the rest is only feedback as to the effort you put into it.
I can fully understand how McDonough would feel. 2 x NCAA champion who only lost to the one person in sport history that made having only one leg an advantage. Now in his senior year seemingly regressing yet still very much a contender. It has to be frustrating. I hope for the sake of many thousands of young wrestlers he realizes what he did was wrong and very unsportsman like. The next sound you hear is my big fat a$$ jumping off of the pedastal.
