  1. With all this talk of Lee vs Red and Woods vs Parris, can we all say again how nice it would be to somehow split the #1 and #2 seeds at state so they meet under the lights!! If these pan out, neither should be a semifinal matchup
  2. No incoming freshmen on the list that might shake things up? Others on the radar: B Welliver D Stewart E Starks N Smith I Castro L Black D Bryant J Eiteljorge D Phifer D Kitko A Grino C Moore E Owens T Ragle S Buck T Flood L Burton J Loos J Phillips
  3. Strictly for High School record, I think the only one that can compare is Lance Ellis, due to his incredible percentage of victories by fall. Although I haven't seen the numbers on Chad -- maybe his is nearly as high It remains to be seen how Chad does at the next level but how impressive to put his #1 ranking on the line in this tournament and come out on top with all the pressure on him
  4. From prior threads, Paul Konrath will not be wrestling for Mt Vernon (Posey) as part of the IHSAA season /
  5. Congratulations Nebraska got a good one. Could see some Red vs Micic vs Lee rivalries within the Big 10 (or whatever it's called these days)
  6. just thought I'd say -- I don't really follow Greco but these updates are great -- thanks for putting in the time

  8. You got it, Coach! Prayers sent up for you and your wife
  9. Thats capacity with bleachers extended. Wonder what it will be if entire gym floor is cleared for mats?
  10. I was really impressed that one of the Valencia brothers (a high school senior) was able to win 3rd place in the senior division, losing by only 3 points to Andrew Howe! Arizona State starting to look like they may be the next Penn State
  11. FYI, I have filed a waiver stating that I will be unable to file the proper waiver in time. Will my son be able to wrestle in Indiana?
  12. New Pal doesn't make the cut? I thought they were dropping to 2A, where I think they would be a serious contender to win it all
  13. Praising coach Ersland is not equivalent to bashing coach Hinkel In my opinion, Coach Hinkel was a fantastic coach. He ran a good program, qualified wrestlers for the NCAA tournament, and in general ran a respectable program. No, it wasn't one of the Big 10 elite programs, but I would rate his era as successful. Period. End of Story. Now it is the beginning of a new era with Coach Ersland. If he takes this team to the top 3 in the Big 10 (unlikely, but hey why not?!), it would *NOT* mean that Hinkel's era was suddenly worse. They are two separate entities. In that regard, there is a transition period as Coach Ersland recruits and brings in "his" athletes. I think thus far his recruiting seems to be a success as he is bringing in a highly rated class. How those wrestlers adjust to the Big10 level of competition remains to be seen.
  14. I don't believe that the school size is killing the smaller schools. I believe that the advent of single sport specialization, and the option of doing other activities is what is killing the smaller school programs. Let's say Hoosiertucky HS has a potential of 150 male students across all grade levels 1980s 15 play basketball 20 on the wrestling team 115 of them have a job, aren't athletes, or have no interest in wrestling 2014 15 play basketball 8 on the wrestling team 15 do winter "lifting" for football 10 are doing conditioning for spring baseball or track 5 of them play travel soccer year round 97 of them have a job, aren't athletes, or have no interest in wrestling In my opinion, adding a classed tournament for the smaller schools isn't going to do much getting those other 97 kids out for wrestling. Maybe you'll draw some of the 15 that are lifting, but then aren't you really hurting your small school football team? Rewarding current regional-level quality wrestlers with a trip to "state" is not the answer. Our society has brainwashed parents into believing that the only way to have success at a sport is to specialize in it and do it year-round, and that they only way their athlete will enjoy a sport is if they are not only competing and being part of the team, but reaching some mythical "elite" level. Not everybody is a college athlete. Maybe it's the crusty old fart mentality, but many student athletes don't seem to take pride in working harder than their peers -- the cell phone society is too comfortable compared to sweating 5 days a week after school and "only making sectionals". Just random thoughts, I'm not totally opposed to a 2-class system, but I also do not believe it will increase the numbers across the board at smaller schools. Good coaching and a "team first" mentality will continue to thrive at a handful of schools. Wrestlers at small schools have a host of options available to them in offseason wrestling if they want to specialize and make the run at a high finish. I just pulled those numbers out of the air -- I'd love to hear some real-world numbers from a small school coach. What are all the kids doing during winter sports? How many of the non-wrestlers do you think you could pull onto the team if, say, you built the program such that you had 4-5 "small state" qualifiers every year?
  15. I agree and I think he's capable of placing. I just found it funny that the comment came across as "hey no pressure or anything, you just have to finish in the top 5 in state!" Best of luck to the Lebanon wrestlers
  16. "You WANT me to keep spectators behind that wall....You NEED ME to keep spectators behind that wall...!!!" - Pink shoe IHSAA operative
  17. Sounds like the brackets are fine, but the behavior of pre-releasing the random draw should still be dealt with, in my opinion. We obviously need to bring back the briefcase handcuffed to an undisclosed person from the IHSAA, rather than putting draws out on the interwebs. Also, I want to see a photo of the mysterious IHSAA operative "pink lady"
  18. Your son (a great wrestler) is a year out of high school and you're still plugging him?!? C'MON MAN! :-D
  19. One of the arguments for classed individual state is that athletes at small schools play multiple sports, so they can't be year-round wrestlers. Classing the individual state championships is not going to change that. If you want to increase participation at the high school level, I think you focus on increasing participation at the elementary and middle school levels, and not by luring them with shiny medals and trophies. More of those kids will continue and increase participation into high school. In my opinion, it doesn't feel right that a kid finishing 3rd in his county tournament places at state by virtue of attending a smaller school. If your goal is to increase the overall level of wrestling skill within the state, then offer more free and/or low priced academies around the state for the younger kids. Setup more open live rooms, more beginner tournaments, and more chances to improve skill levels during the time when school size is not a factor.
  20. What's the name of the south bend club? Is it The South Bend Club?
  21. Among some of the semistate wrestlers, i'd like to know what wrestling clubs they have worked with in the past, for instance Region Wrestling, CIA, Pride Wrestling Academy, Maurer-Coughlin, etc. Non-school-affiliated clubs only
  22. You are the Shakespeare of our era j/k I really appreciate your semistate preview
  23. I feel like Gelen probably never really had to work much to get out from bottom in HS. That may be his biggest adjustment in college, having a skilled Big10 caliber big man holding you down when you're inexperienced. That said, he is massive and athletic and I hope he sticks with it
