Nice attitude. That will surely help get things accomplished. You, as the main source of information on wresting in this state, and the IHSWCA should be working hand in hand to promote the sport in whatever way possible, not having some stupid pissing contest.
I remember watching Sullivan from Beech Grove and Ellis being tied late in a match during a dual at Tech in 1989. I seem to remember Ellis cutting him and then taking him down with very little time left in the match to win a close one.
Off the top of my head:
103/106 - Gabe Zirkelbach
112/113 - Chip Elderkin
119/120 - Greg Schaefer
125/126 - Buzz Mieras
130/132 -
135/138 -
145 - Craig Weinzapfel
152 - Matt Armentano
160 - Matt Coughlin
171 - Blake Maurer
182/189 -
215/220 -
HVY -
I'll have to think about these other spots later. My mind is drawing a blank.
Although Cathedral has 0 state titles, they are good year in and year out. Always crank out some good wrestlers. Probably wouldn't put them in the top 5 though.
I'll take a shot at Mater Dei.
Mike Goebel
Randy Helfrich
Blake Maurer - "modern era"
Chip Elderkin - "Old school era"
I think you would have to have both Goebel and Helfrich. That leaves only 2 spots. I think Maurer gets one based on being a 4x state champ. That last spot could be debated for a long time and there are so many worthy contenders.
Will be interesting to see where those 2 fit into the line up. You've got Lehman, Johnson, Jordan and Pierre all in that range. I think Lee can beat any of them so he might be able to pick where he goes. Not sure where Egli will fit in. I'm sure there will be some shuffling, weight changes, etc to get them in the line up.
Start smaller. Instead of trying to schedule top 5 teams in the nation like St. Paris Graham, how about just a top 5 team in the state of Ohio or Illinois? Beating teams like that will get you some notice and could open a door to a match up with the St. Eds of the world. Staying put in Indiana and beating up on the same teams every year doesn't do anything to enhance a national profile.
Didn't stop MD from wrestling St. Paris Graham a few years ago (or St. Ed's way back in the day) or going to the Cheesehead or going to Cincy.
And by the way, I agree that the rule is stupid. But there are plenty of opportunities to find good out of state competition within the rules. Unfortunately few teams in Indiana seek out those opportunities.
There is nothing stopping our top teams from seeking competition in neighboring states. MD goes to Missouri, and they've been to Ohio many times. I know that Merriville has been to the same tournament in Missouri as MD and Mishawaka has wrestled teams from Michigan (I think). Teams like Perry should seek competition outside the state. Teams from the region have a short trip to the Chicago suburbs that have really good teams. Now, maybe they have looked at doing this and just haven't been able to make it work due to scheduling or other issues. I guess my point is don't blame the travel restrictions when there are some many good teams in our neighboring states that we don't attempt to wrestle (at least it doesn't appear that we have attempted).
MD only has one qualifier back, but 9 of their 12 SS qualifiers are back. It's logical to think that most, if not all, could take that next step. I'd say around 8 qualifiers next year.
I do appreciate the coverage. I said it was brutal to read because it was. I read the forums over on the open mat. I've read many, many posts by DiMaria and I don't recall many grammatical errors in his message board posts.
It was good for what it was. A snapshot preview of the state tournament. I just felt it was poorly written and I'm sure AWN will work to improve it in the future.
Getting caught implies that the wrestler got lucky and fell into the cradle doesn't give credit to the wrestler that executed the technique. That's all. But thanks for the tip.
What kind of dirt bag steals from a fellow wrestler??? Pathetic.
Now with that said, I would never buy $200 headphones for my kid let alone let him leave them unattended at a tournament.
