If you went back a ways ((pre-late 1990s?) before the creation of the current format, there was a time when only the two finalists went to Regionals.  All it took was three good schools, and many very good kids would finish their year after the semifinals.  One such example was the old Brebeuf Sectional.  in the late 1980s and through the early1990s Cathedral, North Central, and Chatard were all top 15 teams.  Then throw in Brebeuf's three or four very tough kids, and the semifinals were full of great wrestling.

Parris is for sure in the conversation mix now.  I think he needs to make a senior team to contend for the Indiana GOAT title.  That being said, I will not be surprised when that happens.

Escobedo has to be in the equation...

...and, for what it's worth, Sarah Hildebrandt's senior-level world hardware probably makes her the overall Indiana GOAT.

A total misconception that all Big 10 teams must field the same sports.  For example, Wisconsin does not have a baseball team.

Wow.  I had no idea.  The spread between 3rd and 4th place is fascinating, too.

The 2003 Mater Dei team would have had the record before Crown Point last year.

According to this article, they would have scored 158.

But that score is not recognized by the IHSAA records because the IHSAA team title was crowned through the team dual tournament.

To be clear, no where did I mention anything about the size of school or class sports.

I merely wondered if the nationwide trend toward elite wrestling academies, national pre/post season tournaments (Super 32, Beast of the East, Poweraid, etc...), and some of the best kids forgoing high school seasons to train with RTCs is truly best for the sport.  Maybe it is.  I am just not so sure yet, and I hardly call it negative to discuss such.

Like it or not, the biggest academies, national travel, and the rise of powerhouse private schools like Sem, Valiant Prep, etc...  are aspects of our sport that are here and deserve to be explored and scrutinized.

Is it really?  I can't help but wonder if high school wrestling is on the cusp of becoming like high school tennis...  Where the best don't bother competing for their school, the few that do have little to do with the high school program, national tourneys are all that matter, and a sport for the very wealthy.  Im not saying its there now, but think maybe this is where we are headed.

South has shone some moxie this year. I’m not sure Washington has a chance to AA, as I thought this year. He has a problem of getting off bottom , and if he doesn’t attack all the time, he gives up too much. We’ll see. Great team effort again. Needed every one.

For me the answer is simple.  Unless you are old like me, people don't get the context of Lance Ellis' four year run.  Before Lance showed up, there had not been anyone in decades who pretty much destroyed people like he did...except for maybe David Palmer from Muncie...  Anyway, also note we didnt have the interwebs to see all the four timers from other states.  It was a much smaller world then where we would have probably never heard of the elite kids from other states.  Four timers were almost mythological.  Consequently, his dominance was so much fun to watch.

I never heard that story. I did see Lance stick his knees out at state from the neutral position once. It looked like he was taunting the other wrestler to shoot on him. The other kid called his bluff and did indeed get a brief takedown. Ellis quickly escaped then lateral dropped him for a pin.

I was on deck at a tournament (maybe at Delta?) in 1985 or 86 waiting to wrestle when I saw Ellis launch some kid to outer space half way across the mat. Fortunately, I had enough common sense to not adopt a Vision Quest, drop 2 weight classes and get myself embarrassed.

We did the middle school winter tourny series in 2014-16. All the ISWA meets we attended including CP and RWA practices were folkstyle except freestyle and Greco state. I heard of one practice at Hanover Central where you could learn freestyle and Greco moves, so I just gave my son a few tips and told him to have fun and chalk it up for experience.

Back in the 80s, AAU ran the meets and they were often freestyle and Greco. We practiced gut wrenches, alligator rolls, laterals (we called them whip overs), ankle laces, under arm spins and headlocks with defenses (we called it a snake) at every winter season practice it seems. The gut wrench alone may have an hundred different technical details. If you don’t know how to crawl forward or grab an ankle, for example, you may be lucky to last a minute with 10 points being a tech in freestyle now. At least with 15 point techs in the 80s, you had some reasonable time to invent a defense to a move that surprised you.

I think this may be part why Ellis got so good with his throws since he was using them at maybe every meet when freestyle tournaments were more common.

I personally got a chance to be involved in EMD and Perry Meridian. The two legendary programs have wrestled each other at both IHSAA Team State and IHSWCA Team State for a number of years with 2002, 2006, and 2015 likely being the most memorable for people.
