  1. Not if you talk to most "expert" parents. The only way to get a scholarship is specialization. They don't realize how rare a D1 athlete is. Also, I've experienced a lot of AAU/Travel/Club coaches making promises to kids/parents about their son/daughter being a D1 caliber player if they just put more time in to that sport. How many athletes walking the halls could improve their other sports just by wrestling? They would rather lift 3 days a week or go to easy open gyms a couple times a week and be lazy.
  2. Angel lost out of state to Joe Gomez, who was pretty good. Just curious -- who is Red's best opponent in high school?
  3. How about not just picking, but your confidence in that individual winning that weight class. This would be interesting as some weight classes with studs would be lower on your confidence rankings. Also, much different than a pound-for-pound list as two guys could be on that list, but a toss-up match might make you rank your pick a little lower. My picks in order of confidence: 1) 126 - Red 2) 152 - Forte 3) 132 - Lee 4) 195 - Rypel (two studs Scott & Hinkle have made noise at Banker's Life, but I think Rypel is that good) 5) 138 - James (had to think twice about putting 138 this high with Cash in this weight, but again I think James is that good) 6) 220 - Woods (finds a way to get it done) 7) 106 - Cummings (one of the weaker weight classes) 8) 182 - Osborn (one of the weaker weight classes) 9) 145 - Covaciu (definitely some guys who could make it interesting: Pruitt, McCormick, Lawrence, etc.) 10) 160 - Hughes (I think he could be higher up on this list, but Schurg makes me hesitate on this pick) 11) 285 - Streck (two nationally ranked studs battle it out) 12) 113 - Pepple (4th at Super32 vs. Konrath Cadet National Champ) 13) 170 - Stevenson (I'll take the defending champ, but this weight class has some studs with Jackson, Harvey, Lydy, etc) 14) 120 - Reitz (again give me a defending champ unless Hudkins is healthy, but this weight class is a mess. New #1 every update) Some other guys: Hudkins, Lahue, Ferguson, Myron Anderson (Yorktown). Are these guys wrestling?
  4. Unfortunately, there is only one true team state champion recognized by the IHSAA and its at the end of the individual state finals. Last year that was Indianapolis Cathedral. The IHSWCA Duals identifies the best team, but sadly that's just another regular season "tournament".
  5. I highly doubt James and his coaches need a comment on a message board for motivation.
  6. If there video stream is working that day. Seems to be hit or miss.
  7. Apparently, you can only be a good coach if you have the right athletic credentials. I agree that a bigger name would help with recruiting, but that doesn't mean some of the bigger names that were thrown out as suggestions would be able to develop the talent. Regardless of what we think, now that he's the coach, we should see what he does with the program before making any judgements
  8. Is the NCAA tournament also flawed? Would you prefer a National Duals format? Minnesota beat Penn State in a dual.
  9. Yeah those guys don't know anything about wrestling. They would be terrible, probably only get 3 AA's in 7 years.
  10. Reece -- head coach Angel -- light weights coach Howe -- upper weights coach Also, it would never happen, but what if one of these programs threw big time money at a David Taylor or Jordan Burroughs or someone of that stature.
  11. Definitely in the discussion with best without a state title. Does he change that next season?
  12. Sorry don't watch the "hang outs". Here is my prediction: the IHSAA will NOT adopt the IHSWCA dual tournament by 2016 or by 2018 so it will continue to be a regular season tournament.
  13. Doesn't matter. Only one IHSAA team champion goes down in the record books. It doesn't matter if you like it. It's what we have. Can't crown anyone a state champion from a regular season tournament.
  14. I think you made a mistake: Mater Dei wins the team title. Both the (air quotes) "TEAM" title at the IHSWCA tournament and the real team title at the state tournament led by the 2 Lee brothers who both win state titles
  15. What would an all-Indiana team look like with current D1 wrestlers (this season only)? Can we even fill all of the spots? Off the top of my head: 125 -- Petrov 133 -- Quiroga 141 -- 149 -- Tsirtsis 157 -- 165 -- 174 -- Howe 184 -- 197 -- Atwood 285 -- Chalfant
  16. I agree that you have to hit on in-state talent to be successful. I think both programs have underachieved, but they are attracting some studs. We forget how good Quiroga was because he lost to Tsirtsis (and Tsirtsis is so special). Eppert, Quiroga, Nelson, Atwood have all been Big 10 quality wrestlers. They've also attracted some other top guys like Ayersman, Farrell and even some who didn't work out, Stein, Devon Jackson, etc. Same goes for IU. Andrae and Angel were great Big 10 wrestlers with Angel obviously being one of the best. They've attracted some of Indiana's top wrestlers (regardless of how it's worked out). Powless was an AA, plus Raley, Roach, Molloy, Chalfant, Fletcher Miller (recruit), etc. IU has also had some guys not work out. Didn't Brandon Wright start at IU? They were in the mix for Nathan Boston for a little bit. I'm sure there are others. It would definitely be nice to keep all of our top dogs at home (Tsirtsis, Howe, Micic, Sliga, plus guys like Corsaro, Bernard, LeCount, etc.) I don't think they've been outrecruited by U of I or Wabash but maybe they've missed a couple of guys who might have worked out at the Big 10 level (Keiffer brothers, Riley LeFever, etc.)
  17. You can't base this year's "tournament" on a past year's results. There might not be a better solution, other than the one we gave up, but that doesn't mean its not absurd.
  18. Migraines are brutal. Glad he is recovering!
