Yes… in one of the classiest moves that I ever seen. Coach Snyder defaulted. Couldn’t be more proud of our staff!
I have never seen that done before and I can think of many times it would have been the “right” thing to do. My hat’s off to Coach Snyder.
Hopefully Haines is not badly injured.

To add more to the dilema. I saw on FB someone complaining about a kid qualifying for 126 and was allowed to register at 120. I did my research and found out that it actually occured. It looks like the "wrestlers will only be able to register for the weight class they qualified for" doesn't matter.
I'm not a fan posting kids names, so I'll refrain from posting screen shots.
This tournament is notorious for last second, weigh-in shenanigans. Doesn’t matter if there are qualifiers, day before, day-of (mat side, shoes on/off), no weight changes day of— there has always been someone getting in when they didn’t deserve to. Never the kid just getting into wrestling and didn’t understand the rules either. Almost always someone who knows someone and usually a champ.
More hoops to jump through means more room for shenanigans.

Is it time to consider having them wrestle in 3A going forward? They are the smallest school size in most divisions and will struggle against the Indianapolis all stars team ( we know who that school is) and the Region all star team with an addition of Chicago and Illinois based teams (we know who that school is). MD is a prideful program, but that is too many odds stacked up against them..

Odd year to have this argument. They just placed 4th amongst the largest schools. Why go down in class and compete with the smaller teams with what would logically have less depth?
Heck, why 3A? I think by enrollment they would be a 1 or 2A school. That doesn’t sound like fun for anyone.

The 5 starters who didn’t make weight may have contributed to coach’s decision. Plenty of “slamming” to go around.

You think it's a confidence booster for his coach to tell him "you're not good enough to even try"?
Another great quote. And in no way what happened.
Do you watch tv and movies with the sound off and make up their conversations in your head, too?

WC putting up a string of forfeits was weird, and just made no sense. I was half watching, but it looked like they wrestled all those weights in the next dual, and then just left instead of wrestling the final consolation match.
EMD pulling their hwt in the 3/4 dual with CG was weird too. He was up and getting ready, then the coach saw the CG kid check in and said "nah, we're not doing this today".
I’m terms of the EMD/CG HWT match you are definitely ttrying to stir the pot, weren’t watching very closely, and can’t read lips.
it was a heavyweight match and MD did ff but the rest of your details are incorrect, unless “warmed up and ready” means sitting on bench in his full warmup pants and team
shirt and headgear on the ground.

Not that Orlando hasn't been a very good wrestler throughout his high school career, but I was even more impressed by his wrestling this season. He has (or at least used) more offense than in years past. His success, in terms of his win-loss record, takedown record, speaks to the same. He was fun to watch at State.
Not always does a wrestler continue to make big gains later in high school, but he seems to have done it. Best part, he isn't done. I hope the takedowns continue to add up at Purdue.

MD's strength has always been its depth, especially during those early 2000s teams. In any dual they could expose another team's weakness but "pulling a kid off the bench." and beat a state placer so one of their state finalists could bump up a weight (or 2) and beat another team's state champ.
So many top 8 (or better) guys have gone through MD and never actually placed at state or only did it once, when they could have multiple times due to the quality of the guys wrestling ahead of them.
That's why I don't really think you should consider a team by the guys who "should have": been there. Those guys need to make the weight, keep the grades, not do things they shouldn't be doing. Next man up, that's part of the difference between team and individual champs.

Not really an either/or thing. All one weight class at a time doesn’t have to have empty mats. Keeping mats busy doesn’t have to allow 1 mat to fall behind.
Most tourneys run first available anymore. Gives Whitehead a better chance to announce wrestlers, too. Doesn’t have to race through 8 names all at once.
Just one guy’s opinion, I guess. Bringing it up since the crowd looks a little thin and seems more quiet this year. Forcing schools to scatter their crowds around the stadium probably doesn’t help that either.
-
Empty mats lead to less fans in the seats in my opinion. Ghost town by the time heavies go.

I have been to the state finals every year since early 2000s and I don’t recall ever waiting for each weight class to finish for the next to start. Rarely is the last match the one that has everyone’s interest. I find it to be a momentum killer.
Obviously, placement matches are different and we should wait for those
Don’t get me started on the Friday afternoon 1.5 hour break between “sessions.” If they aren’t really sessions, where you can leave and return, don’t schedule it as such.
So far, been a lot of great matches though and the waits have been worth it, just not necessary.

I'm sure the Ford Center will do a better job next year. Hopefully, people like it so much we don't have to worry about Gainbridge again.

Have a sense of humor. The fact that everyone knows what he is talking about means there is a little truth to it. No matter where he goes, he is a great wrestler and a great pick up for any program.

In summary...can't make everyone happy. Good thing this is only true in wrestling and nowhere else in life.
-
Only in wrestling, do we get to hear about the unfortunate larger schools. Every other sport its the unfortunate little schools that get don't have the numbers, the facilities, or athletes to compete. As the math shows that a higher percentage of the bigger schools get to compete at Team State than the little ones the way it is. So lets kick out 2 smaller schools out to let the bigger ones in. Argument would be "bigger schools get their way in every other sport, why not wrestling?"
Let's face it, can't make everyone happy and some teams are going to be allowed in and others unfortunately will be left out. We have already increased the number of teams competing for a state championship x4, which is great for the sport. It's funny some solutions to this particular "who's in, who's out" is to go back to something similar to the old "open" 8-team Team state.
Do another tournament, the same weekend for the team's that don't make it to state. It can be "open" or "classed" and more teams can compete that day. Good for the sport? sure. Does it allow every team that wants to compete at state to participate in the team state tourney? no. Again, not everyone will be happy. Allow 12 teams to compete--make the day last forever and water down the competition--and the #13 team in each class will be upset.
Let's face it, the way this Team State tourney is done is pretty great the way it is and I believe everyone leaves each class' tourney confident the best team that day won and a team that unfortunately wasn't invited wouldn't have been champ if only they could have attended.

I just don't see how having 12 teams in each division is bad? So 1A cares that 4A has the same amount of teams competing?
Also Indiana Football has a reclassification every 2 year. They have 7 divisions and do this. Wrestling has 4.
For a sport that struggles to keep interest why would less wrestling be better? Specifically from the larger schools.
1----All CLASSES SHOULD HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF REPRESENTATIVES!
And so my argument here is WHY with less spots available are smaller school bumping up and taking away from the bigger schools spots ? I understand that they want to compete, so do the bigger schools.
2----12 teams per class, again this cant hurt anything it allows more wrestling and I am sure more revenue for the host school of the meet.
3---Reclassification at least every other year, not every year.
As far a the private schools the should not get to pick where the play what sport. EMD is 4A for wrestling, but 2A for football???
I believe you play in your class size that you actually are. It is silly that the bigger schools are the ones punished because the smaller ones play up. If it is okay to move up it should be okay to move down. I am sure the 2A teams would love a crack at EMD. Ad other 3A teams a crack at Cathedral. But in fairness you are knocking out 2 other schools that are a certain class size picked by the committee. If they do move up then the team they bump should be able to move down a class and take the spot.
My understanding is that you need to have a doctorates in Calculus to figure out the equation from the different Sectionals, Regionals, and Semi state and they are all different?? I keep looking at Moorseville and the amount of just powerhouses that come out of the SEC. & REG is just insane. They knock each other. While there maybe some adjustments to points based on the sectional, it doesn't help when your bumped as the 5 th guy in any of it.
In the Moorseville Regional regional alone their are 6 x 4A teams
AVON
BEN DAVIS
Brownsburg
Center Grove
Pike
Whiteland
Consider MD and Cathedral to have moved up due to a similar "success factor" that other sports currently have. It totally makes sense for me to have the 4A champ to likely be the best team in the state, no matter class. There will be years that this isn't true but for the most part, it is.
Honestly, no way to make everyone happy. There will be a line drawn somewhere and those below the line are likely to be upset. When there was a single team state champ, the #9 team was upset they didn't make it, but all had to qualify--a line was drawn. Now we have 32 teams fighting for 4 state championships, yet we now have even more teams (likely none that would win) upset they didn't make the cut.
Just because some aren't happy, I would not make a change that keeps the top 4-5 teams from competing for the largest class championship.

So far this has only seemed to make attending state more difficult.
No large groups...that's students, fellow wrestlers, families (isn't that the main group that attends state).
You have to buy tickets mid-tourney, no matter who you are--wrestlers family, wrester that loses Friday, hard core/casual fan.
I can't imagine the mess that will ensue at 10:00 Friday night. I'm sure you will eventually get a ticket, just not one you want, but don't worry.......it will be there when you get there. Just find one of the overworked ushers (that haven't had to do much any previous tourney) who will help you remove the part of the family sitting in your seat.
But, you can show up at starting time (like everyone else now as there is no rush) and complain about they don't let everyone in fast enough even though wrestling already started. Your seat will be waiting.
Fixed 1 problem, but caused 30 new ones.
