Excited to get some of our college alumni back in Mishawaka this summer 💪

h2ooutofmudpuddles reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: THREEEEE Big Rule Changes Coming to High School Wrestling
Big changes are coming to high school wrestling this season. Over the past ten years the collegiate folkstyle rules have become almost a different sport with out of bound stalling, what determines out of bounds, and this past year the three point takedown. While many were clamoring for the college out of bounds rules with only one supporting point determining being in bounds it was repeatedly shot down by the NFHS due to mat and gym size concerns.

This year though, the NFHS has decided that it is time to implement the one supporting point criteria for high school wrestling. While making the wrestling area a little bigger this rule will make it easier for referees to focus on the action instead of checking for the proper amount of supporting points of the wrestlers.

On top of that change the NFHS has approved the popular three-point takedown. This year at the NCAA level they went to a three-point takedown. Many people were cautious, but also excited about that big change. After the NCAA season concluded many felt that the three-point takedown was a huge success.

If these two big changes aren’t enough for you, the NFHS has also aligned with the NCAA level with adding a four-point nearfall. After four seconds on your back the offensive wrestler will now be awarded four points instead of taking five seconds to earn only three points. This was implemented in the NCAA since 2015 and last year they updated the rule to allow two points for two seconds, three points for three seconds, and four points for four seconds or more. The NFHS will follow the NCAA and implement all three scenarios for nearfall.

Other rule changes include a clarification of the Technical Fall criteria and not requiring a 10-foot circle on the wrestling mat.

Here is the NFHS article on the changes

Why make our wrestling softer and have wrestle-backs? Should we give kids a second chance after they lose? Life's tough, when I lose $25k on poor investments, I don't get a redo and get that money back.

1.Yea,  instead of using  these soiled  word not be said to the IHSAA, "Wrestlebacks".  We'll use the word "Repechage".  Its more exotic,  mysterious, and interesting.  We could rebrand the whole movement

    2.  "No wrestlebacks" not only make our wrestlers work harder,  the process is much more efficient.  You  only need to wrestle 20 matches per bracket instead of the bloated 29 in a wrestleback bracket.  Thats a 35% savings,    You sell tickets at full price, but give the customers 35% less matches.     That's what you call profitable.   They should apply that to the State football and basketball tournaments.    Just play 2 1/2 quarters in state tournament basketball games,  you get done a lot earlier.   That way,  the basketball teams would have to do a lot more in the 1st quarter because it would count more.  The 1st quarter would be much more exciting.

Maybe the should apply that to track also.  Like in the 100 Meter dash should be the 65 meter dash.   The start of the race would be much more important and  really exciting.  Instead of going to 25 points in state tournament volleyball games, they should  go to 16 points.    Lets play 4 1/2  innings in a state baseball games.  That 1st inning would really be exciting, just like our ticket round.   We could do it to swimming also,   Nobody wants to sit and a watch a full 500 meters.  Lets reduce it by 35%, people would be much more interested in the  325 meters.  Do you want to watch all 18 holes at the state golf tournament?   Get this,   how about 12 holes.   Thats efficient and exciting.   Gymnastics has too many apparatus also,  lets cut out the uneven bars and give them one vault instead of two.  Tennis is too long, lets make it a 4 game set instead of 6. That 1st game really would count.

Why does he have to be injured ? He wrestled the Top Ranked Center Grove kid days before and it was won 4-2 in last 30 seconds . Huyvaert is tough and styles make matches . The greatest thing about this sport is it can all change from day to day .

Not injured…it was 15-3 with a few seconds left in the 2nd and Graham got a reversal. All Graham’s other points were from Huyvaert cutting him. Does everyone forget that Huyvaert gave Solomey his only loss last year?

With all due respect, that ref didn’t know his left from right. After determining odds and evens ahead of the same dual, he wanted to start flipping the coin midway through to determine whose choice it was. In a later dual, he awarded an escape when both wrestlers were approximately 8-10 feet off the mat. I could go on but I’m afraid there’s a character limit. Multiple teams requested throughout the day for him to not officiate their dual, and the other refs acknowledged that he was not of the highest quality.

Definitely not a toss up on the next 5 maybe tier B with the next 3/4 with Avon, Warren Central, Cathedral & EMD . Warren had kids miss weight I heard. PM & Penn Has a very very difficult with anyone in front of them.
I don't think it is all that close except for EMD to PM & Penn and really there is  Fishers, HSE, Zionsville & BD this weekend looks to have some answers to ranks. But the rankings are put together By Mike. and while he does great and has a ton of info given to him, these are his opinions. HE would be the first to tell ya he is not perfect at this.  Penn may have more in the rankings. Does not mean I agree with the rankings. I think it is easier to add a kid from up north because he has a lot of relationships up north. Hard to be 100% Bias in his spot. Not like there is a Sagarin rating for wrestling. Possibly P.I.N. system maybe after a few years and enough data it may get to be more accurate. Hell Fishers maybe the 8th team after this weekend.. I am confident in my first 7......
Question Does Penn have a 106? I saw a FF on track. What was the PENN CARMEL RESULT? Last year it was some secret and nothing there this year. You would think that with both those team jostling for a spot the winner would have made sure the results were in for that match and there others. Both are huge programs I am sure the have assistants and managers and no one puts them in.
