it's gonna take a bad man to win the 116,123 and 135 pound weight classes. them are 3 of the toughest I've ever seen in any tournament.  not knowing the seedlings yet I guess I'll take a shot at picking top 3.
wow. I can see 8 different guys that have a legitimate shot to win this one!
    116.
    1.Horst
    2.Curtis
    3. Littell
I see 10 guys that i wouldn't be surprised if they win it!!
    123.
    1.Ford Melton
    2.Garcia
    3.Mills
I also see 8 in this weight class also.
    135.
    1.Fields
    2.Rachal
    3.Munson

This is absolutely incredible because usually when you look at a bracket even in some of the toughest tournaments around you may find 3 or maybe 4 guys with a decent shot to win it, well Im sure others may not see as many as me and some may see more but we can all agree that this tournament and these weights especially have got to be one of the toughest in the nation.  very nice job by indiana mat to get this tournament to where it is today. the first few years were just like a normal tournament. Now this is THE tournament.

I think you're mistaking us questioning the 2 first place votes with hate.  No doubt Bane is a fine young man, but there are many other fine young men that also had more successful wrestling careers.  Besides, you'd have to have been living in a cave for the last 15 years to not be aware of breast cancer at this point, haha.

Since when did any contrary opinion become perceived as "hate"?

Someone posted earlier in a thread how they wished to see a Maurer/Dolly rematch, and after looking up the year this match happened, I remembered the finals of this tournament was posted on YouTube. I was able to see the match in its entirety, and I must say... It was awesome. Not often do you see upper-weight 1-1 matches get that exciting, but this one was all that and more. I took a couple of notes from this match-up:

    - Maurer's conditioning never faded. Throughout the entire match, he seemed fresh. He didn't look gassed what so ever, and if he was, he had a great way of not showing it.
    - The old Bankers Life Fieldhouse (then known as Conseco) looked awesome in this video. In 2012, the venue was gifted with a state-of-the-art scoreboard with 50 ft. long, 1080p HD screens, and 25x14 ft. 1080p HD screens facing the baseline. The new scoreboard allows for more lighting throughout the arena and on the floor, but in this state finals, with the old scoreboard (and I know some credit goes to past camera quality), you couldn't see anything BUT the wrestlers. You couldn't see the crowd or coaches, but you could hear them. The video is also great as there is no commentary, only sounds of "Let's go, Blake!" and "Let's go, Dolly!" and coaching calls.
    - Incredible defense from both sides. Alex Dolly had unreal defense defending Maurer's two single leg attacks, which in many scenarios would have scored on most wrestlers. Maurer was also able to defend a buck-and-roll attempt that had him on his back for a fraction of a second, which too would've caught many others.
    - The electricity of EMD and Mishawaka was unreal. I can only imagine being there as it had to be an unforgettable experience in those days.

I definitely add this in my list of best matches ever. The only thing that would've made it better was if I seen it live.

Other matches that you know of that I can possibly find footage of, please suggest or post below. The IHSAA also has DVDs of past individual and team state finals. The Maurer/Dolly match can be found here:

    3A Coach of the Year
    Chris Joll from Chesterton
Returning 13 starters from their 2016 squad the Trojans were poised for a spectacular season. Riding the waves of some talented big guys Coach Chris Joll's squad finished 2nd at state. Individually the Trojans qualified six wretlers for the state finals with five of them placing. Andrew Davison became the 5th wrestler in school history to win a state champion joining his father and assistant coach Keith, Joh DeHart, and Jim Popp. Also placing were runner-ups Lucas Davison and Diego Lemley, 4th place finisher Eli Pokorney, and 8th place finisher Jack Tolin.

Honorable Mention: Darrick Snyder from Brownsburg and Matt Schoettle from Perry Meridian
    Past Winners
    2016- Darrick Snyder from Brownsburg
    2015- Brad Harper from Penn

    2A Coach of the Year
    Trent McCormick from Yorktown
Word on the street is that Yorktown will need to add on with all of the hardware just from the wrestling team. The Tigers had two state champions this year in Brayden Curtis and Brad Laughlin. They also had runner-up Christian Hunt and 8th place finisher Jacob Rhoades. On top of placing 4th at the state finals, Yorktown captured their fourth IHSWCA 2A Team State Duals title in five years.

Honorable Mention: Maurice Swain from North Montgomery
    Past Winners
    2016- Mark Kerrn from Jimtown
    2015- Trent McCormick from Yorktown

    1A Coach of the Year
    Gary Black from Shenandoah
The Shenandoah Raiders lead by Gary Black have quickly become a program to watch in the state. With a relatively young line-up the Raiders finished 2nd at the IHSWCA Team State Duals in a match that went down to the wire. Individually, coach Black's squad had four state qualifiers including runner-up AJ Black and 8th place finishers Ryan Surguy and Josh Gee.

Honorable Mention: Brett Smith from Prairie Heights
    Past Winners
2016- Brett Smith from Prairie Heights
2015- Tony Currie from Adams Central

    3A Wrestler of the Year
Joe Lee from Evansville Mater Dei
The rumor on the street is that Joe Lee eats broken glass sprinkled with gunpowder and chugs a gallon of diesel fuel before each match. When you see him wrestle, you understand why that rumor has legs. Lee sliced through the field like a hot knife through butter this year with no one getting within 9 points of him during the state series. Lee has already committed to Penn State with one more year of high school left.

Honorable Mention: Brayton Lee from Brownsburg
    Past Winners
2016- Blake Rypel from Indianapolis Cathedral
2015- Chad Red from New Palestine

    2A Wrestler of the Year
    Mason Parris from Lawrenceburg
Mason Parris is good at wrestling. In three years Parris has amassed 159 victories in 160 matches. This year in 53 matches he had 41 pins with only one match going the full six minutes. Parris is already in the talk of one of the best big men in the history of Indiana with one year left to wrestle.

Honorable Mention: Brad Laughlin from Yorktown
    Past Winners
    2016- Brock Hudkins from Danville
    2015- Brock Hudkins from Danville

    1A Wrestler of the Year
    Eli Stock from Monrovia
One of the best stories to come out of this year's state tournament is Eli Stock from Monrovia. This Bulldog defied odds time after time and after the dust had settled he was on top of the podium. After another lengthy football season Stock stepped it up during the state series. He had to fend off numerous challengers in a LOADED regional in which all four competitors punched tickets to state. Stock's run in the post season this year will be talked about for many years go come.

Honorable Mention: Evan Ellis from Eastern
    Past Winners
    2016- Evan Ellis from Eastern
2015- Sawyer Miller from South Adams

May sound biased but I strongly believe Jason Tsirtsis is the most dominant/best wrestler in Indiana history. Freshman year he beat the defending state champion to earn his first state title. The next 3 years he doesn't get scored on offensively. Pinning/teching his way through the state tournament(Senior year). Also bumped up 2 or 3 weight classes to major Bobby Stevenson in a dual meet who later placed 5th at state that year.... I think. Then after the season he beat former NCAA champion, Darrion Caldwell. A couple weeks later he beat the #2 ranked wrestler in the country by a 14 point margin. The last two facts are what separates him from the rest of the pack in my opinion.

I mean the honest answer is you need to be insane and willing to eliminate any free time.

Here is an example of my typical week

Me and Darrick share this responsibility with me leaning more towards head of our youth program.

You have top be willing to put the time in to be successful which honestly means you have to sacrifice a lot of your time.

There are things you can do to help not burn you out such has have dads help and recruit wrestlers to stay after and give you a hand.

For the babies the dads don't have to know much about the sport just be able to watch supervise and correct.

For my older group I have dads help and they tend to learn and ask questions along side the kids.

The benefit of this is they feel more comfortable in a corner on the weekends which means you're not running around to every match because the kid doesn't have a coach.

If there are academies around USE them. A closed door mentality is the worst thing for a program. Different ideas and philosophies are crucial to growth in knowledge in the sport. You as a coach can not know everything be able to admit that.

We have a pretty good youth turnout and would be willing to at least offer what has worked for us.

It was pretty evident in some of the quarters and Semi Finals that there was a lot of Quality Kids there wrestling. Some very good finals matches. If you made the finals my observation was that you probably have a chance in the future to make it down to the bank. Kudos to Southport Staff and Coaches and wrestlers for putting on a quality event that I hope takes off. Were there some Hiccups, Of Course, But not many.......

No disrespect to any of the other guys, but Parris is my choice.  He moves unreasonably quickly for a 220lb wrestler; he wrestlers like a 145er.

He had, what, 4 takedowns in the first minute against Maddox?  I don't know what he weighs in at, but he could have gone up or down a weight class and won the title, in my opinion.
