piscis1956 reacted to DawgPoundRed in Crown Point State weekend
I have been telling everyone this year this Dogs team is special.
The weekend is finally here to prove how great this team is.
12 here, I am calling 11 medals I think we can put 8 under the lights I hope they have lights, 6 champs. It's going to be a great day to be a dog. Even the purple dogs will have a solid day.
Just a heads up we will be better next year, so I think the team trophy is staying region
I'll see you all on the Square for the celebration

I’m excited to see the freshman Volz take on Bollinger tomorrow morning. I think that’s a dangerous match for Bollinger.

Well part of it is that people couldn’t transfer tickets bought Wednesday. So we have 3 seats not occupied because the person that got them didn’t come.

piscis1956 reacted to pauliemaldo in State Champion Theory/Criteria
Apologies for the lengthy post, but thought found this to be interesting. Last night I was scrolling through Tiktok, procrastinating on some homework, and came across a video about NCAA Basketball champions, and how they all fall under certain criteria, and I was curious as to how something like that can be applied to our state tournament. This is what I came up with:
All State Champions but 4, (since 2015) have fallen under at least 3 of the 4 following criteria:
- Taken 2nd or better at respective Semi-State
- Ranked in the Indianamat Final State Top 5 Rankings
- A returning Qualifier
- Wrestles for a team with multiple qualifiers in the same season
The 4 wrestlers who broke this trend?
-Asa Garcia (106) in 2016
- 2nd or Better in SS? Y (1st)
- Top 5? N (Ranked 8th)
- Returning? N (Freshman)
- Team with multiple Qualifiers? Y (Avon)
- Eli Stock (170) in 2017
- 2nd or Better in SS? Y (1st)
- Top 5? N (Ranked 18th)
- Returning? N (Senior)
- Team with multiple Qualifiers? Y (Monrovia)
- Ashton Jackson (106) in 2021
- 2nd or Better in SS? Y (1st)
- Top 5? N (Ranked 7th)
- Returning? N (Sophomore)
- Team with multiple Qualifiers? Y (La Porte)
- Marshall Fishback (285) in 2022
- 2nd or Better in SS? Y (1st)
- Top 5? N (Ranked 10th)
- Returning? N (Senior)
- Team with multiple Qualifiers? Y (Rochester Community)
Knowing the criteria, who are the contenders this year? (* = 4/4)

Some Things to note about this data:
- 94.29% (66/70) of Wrestlers that fell under this criteria won on Friday night this year
- All but 1 wrestler with all 4 of the criteria won on Friday night
Now does someone really need all this criteria to be a state champion? Definitely not. If we could predict every champion using this, the tournament wouldn't be as great as it is. These 'contenders' are not the end all be all, but it's a decent place to start if you're looking to pick your state champion. I'll be continuing to keep track of this as the tournament goes on, and see how this list of criteria plays out. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this as well. Thanks for reading!

Need to move it over to EMD. They keep that gym at a balmy 110 degrees.

Can't figure out why trackwrestling is only showing 6pts for Tell City. They had 3 wins with 1 pin, right?

piscis1956 reacted to Coach Peck in Black Wrestlers and Coaches
I do not think he has been mentioned but a great wrestler and (in my opinion) one of the best coaches in taking a wrestler to a higher level quickly was/is James Tanniehill. Multiple time National Champion as a wrestler and coached many champions.

Can we count Jackson Bradley as a Muncie Southsider? It’s about as close as we have left.

Just an observation, but the rumor we heard concerning State was that event tickets would be sold out in less than an hour. Maybe I am missing something, but the stands look around half capacity?

Didn’t mean to slight Levi Abbott. He’s got some lineage too. Southside blood going through his veins too.

piscis1956 got a reaction from Coach Peck in Black Wrestlers and Coaches
Really showing my age, but watching Muncie Central’s great Pete Lee (state champion and future Olympian) wrestle live in high school helped flame an early spark of interest in wrestling. I remember sitting a few feet from him on the bleachers at sectionals at Muncie Southside and just being in complete awe.

Hard to believe this topic has gotten 2 pages long without mention of the Leavell Brothers. Tim, James, & John (I believe)
All State Champions if I’m not mistaken, with James certainly being one of the best HS wrestlers of his era.
