James "Bubba" Dickerson pinned his way through the state tournament his junior season. He died before his senior year, but man, that guy was a freak of nature.

A had head to head over B
A also has common over C

Thus he gets the top seed

Then it resets and B is 2nd seed, C is 3rd seed based on head to head.

Here is another complaint -- and I raise this every year -- in the sectionals with > 8 teams several of the wrestlers are put into a "one-and-done" scenario.  If you are lucky enough to have a sectional with only 8 teams, then no matter what your record you are in double-elimination with a chance to wrestle back for 4th and a move to Regionals.

So, if you look at the sectionals with > 8 teams they have to seed the top 6 and then the rest are random draw.  However, since only 6 are seeded, that leaves 2 quarterfinal slots that are completely open.  In my opinion, the unseeded wrestlers should go there to battle it out with each other.  Instead, some sectionals do a complete random draw and place an unseeded wrestler against a top seed, while another unseeded wrestler lucks out and gets a bye in that empty quarterfinal slot.

Mooresville coaches have done it right -- the unseeded wrestlers are always paired up on those open slots and the #1 and #2 seeds always draw a bye to the quarterfinals.  Meanwhile, as an example in the Crawfordsville sectional at 182 there is unseeded Wrestler with 17-17 record who has drawn into a first round with the #2 seed.  If he loses, then he is done - no chance to wrestle back for 4th.  In the same bracket, a 12-23 wrestler gets a first round bye to the quarterfinals.  If he loses he still has a shot at wrestling back to move on.  I would like to see that 17-17 unseeded matched up against the 12-23 unseeded wrestler and give the #2 guy a bye.  That way at least both of the unseeded have a better shot to battle for that #3 or #4 finish and another weekend.  For some kids, that alone may make their entire season.

I wasn't at this one, but have read about it and talked to people that were. Back in the mid 90s New Castle and Shenandoah had a tight one going. I believe it all came down to the final match between New Castle's Jeremy Motl and Shenandoah's Scott Gross (runner up at 215 in 97). The atmosphere was so heated that the officials threw everyone in the gym out, including reporters, teachers, parents, etc. If I have the story correct - only the two wrestlers, their coaches, and the school principals were allowed in. I believe Motl won, but I'm not 100 percent positive on that.

This was in the Sectional..not a Dual Meet.  The Sectional score was not close, but things did deterioate very quickly in this match due to a official that was extremely poor for everine all day long.  With about 30 seconds left he penalized Gross for stalling which would have DQed him because of other penalties on the chart.  When he figured out what he had done he did not say that he was taking it off.  Instead he claimed he never made the call.  Gross was ahead by 1 or 2 points with about 5 seconds left.  When the referee blew his whistle Jeremy charged to try to get a takedown.  The gym was loud and the buzzer was hard to hear, but the Official should havehas a clue that the match was over.  He let it go probably 5-10 seconds past the buzzer.  We got a takedown but it was clearly after the buzzer.  Before the Official stopped them Grosses brother came out of the stands to the mat.  People from the stands and benches poored onto the mat.  It took awhile for order to be restored.  When thigns got sorted out the people in charge decided to clear the gym before the heavyweights wrestled.  The only people whio were supposed tostay were the scorers. timrers, school Officials, the Official, and the two heavyweights.  It took awhile, but they cleared the gym, except there were two people sitting in the bleachers.  They happened to be my Mom and Dad.  I saw Shenandoahs AD go to them and have a conversation then motion for the Sheriff's deputy, who was working that day, to come up there.  There was another short conversationa and then the AD and the Deputy returned to the floor and we finnished the Sectional.  Later, I found out that the AD had told my DAd that everyone needed to leave the gym, but my Dad told him that he had paid his money and that he was staying.  The AD said that he would have to have the Deputy remove them if they did not leave (my Mom wanted to go, but she stayed with my Dad).  My Dad repeated his earlier statement (quite calmly according to my Mom).  The AD motioned for the Deputy and told the Deputy that he needed to remove my Mom and Dad from the gym.  My Dad looked at the Deputy and told him that he was not going anywhere.  The AD looked at the Deputy and the Deputy told the AD, "This is Mr. Peckinpaugh he can stay."  They left my Mom and Dad alone to watch the heavyweight match which they had paid to watch.

Reminds me then of when Austin McCloskey was slammed illegally by one of the Kiefer brothers in the New Castle semistate. It wasn't an intentional illegal move, but it injured McCloskey. He decided to injury default so Kiefer could still have a chance to go to state. Pretty classy.

The wrestler chopped the arm very hard, "swung from left field", the other wrestler's elbow severely dislocated.  Match was stopped immediately, wrestler was giving an unnecessary roughness penalty.   Before the 2 minute recovery time expired, the injured wrestler's coach injury defaulted, allowing the other wrestler to continue in the tourney. Great sportsmanship by all in involved, including the offending wrestler, he did not intentionally hurt the other wrestler and was very upset as well.

Delta ran a nice tournament. There were some good matches throughout. I'd say 120, as predicted, was the most competitive. Stevenson stepped up.
Greenfield is much improved and Delta, without a few of their better guys, had a very solid showing. I liked the introductions for the finals a little better last year at Yorktown, but no complaints because Delta had everything moving along quickly. I hope the New Castle kid that hurt his arm will be OK.

This is just a clarification when it comes to Track and the records from there.  Now here is something that if you are worried about it, the match that the wrestler is injured during counts as an injury default, all subsequent matches should be Medical Forfeits, not ID's.  That tells the track system that a loss will be given for the Injury Default, but will not be counted for the Med FF.

I was at a tournament a few years ago in southern Indiana and my son had a very similar situation. He was being beaten pretty handedly but the offensive guy wasn't able to turn him. In an effort to do so, the offensive guy rolled my son - but my son ended up on top and his opponents shoulder blades were flat on the mat. My son wasn't turned in, but he was on top, looking up and being held by the other guy, while the other guy was literally laying flat on his back. Whether or not it qualified as a defensive pin or not, I am not exactly sure. But when I said to my wife beside me that it looks like a defensive pin, apparently the other dad heard and started yelling at me that there was no such thing. I told him there absolutely is, but that I wasn't even talking to him - I was talking to my wife. He started yelling obscenities, etc. I got a little heated as well - but kept my cool. His son beat my son, and he acted like it was a state championship. My son didn't even get out of sectional that year...so he wasn't beating some highly touted guy.

So the kid who got hit in the face with a chair thrown by a grown man is the wimp in this situation?

It would be nice to know the realignments so schedules can be changed to wrestle teams that might be coming into a sectional.  If a team is leaving a sectional, then it makes sense for us to know so we can take them off our schedule if there is no need to wrestle them.

Earlier this year I was officiating a match and wrestler had a kid in a headlock. When it turned potentially dangerous I stopped the match and gave the wrestler his 3 points. The coach called me to the table and I pointed out that it had turned potentially dangerous he said that he agreed with the call TOTALLY!   But that if he did not call me to the table then he would have to deal with a mother up in the stands. I asked him if I should just stand there for a minute then shake my head NO! He said absolutely that would work, but as I went back to continue the match I could not stop laughing.

Ragle didn't wrestle Wilkerson this season. If he had, and lost, do you think he would be seeded higher than him? If you look at the results Wilkerson didn't go 120 vs. New Castle at the beginning of the year.
I'm really not sure why you are hating on such an outstanding kid based solely on my prediction that he could win conference. Also, you can claim all you want about New Castle's schedule, but that doesn't change the fact that Ragle lost by two points in the ticket round to get to state.
And, I don't know how good Noehre is. His record is impressive, for sure. And he's a No. 1 seed for a reason. But, you can't get all offended anytime someone picks someone other than your guy to win a match. It's what makes this board fun.

About thirty years ago a referee has just called a pin on a heavyweight (not from NC) who had made a mistake and went to his back.  The Official and the kids get up as the Official all of a sudden bear hugged and lifted by the heavyweight who was pinned.  The Official did know what was going on and, of course, was immediatley concerned.  before He knew it he had spun around and set back to his feet.  He saw what was happening as the heavyweight turned back around just in time to bear hug his own father who was running onto the mat to go after the Official.  Thiings got settled down and later the Official thanked the wrestler.

At New Castle Semi-State a few years back, ticket round match, a kid gets pinned and mom comes running down the stairs, trys to jump the barricade and trips then lip skids across the mat, jumps up & acts like that didn't just happen, then screams at the ref for calling the fall against her kid. Quite comical...
