I've always felt open tournament results suggest D2-D3-NAIA all-americans are roughly D1 starter level and D2-D3-NAIA champs are D1 national qualifier level.

Using those comparisons, 13 of 14 from 2016 were good enough and stuck with college wrestling to the point of being D1 starter-caliber or better. That's shocking. Reaching that level, even after a good high school career, requires a LOT going right personally and athletically. Amazing group.

2004's list of champs was pretty solid. You had:

Angel Escobedo - 4X HS Champ, 4X AA and NCAA Div 1 Champ

Matt Coughlin - 2X HS Champ, 2X HS Runner-Up, NCAA Div 1 AA

Alex Tsirtsis - 4X HS Champ, NCAA Div 1 AA

Reece Humphrey - 3X HS Champ, 2X NCAA Div 1 AA

Andrae Hernandez - 2X HS Champ, NCAA Div 1 AA

Blake Maurer - 4X HS Champ

Adam O'Neil - 2X NJCAA AA

Darren Elkins - 15-year UFC Veteran

Jon Lloyd - NAIA AA

I didn’t hear a lot about Joe Lee after high school. Glad to hear he made it as a D1 starter.

And in addition to the Champs that year was Nick Lee who finished 2nd to Chad Red that year.

-4X NCAA D1 AA (actually 5X but one was mythical)

-2X NCAA D1 Champ

-2023 USA World Team member

That certainly was one heck of a year for Indiana wrestling!

The fact that we got Nick Lee and Chad Red in the finals is insane and the success they’ve both went on to have… I’ll forever hold my senior year (2016) up as the best senior class and best year of champions.

Joe was essentially a starter for PSU for one season.

Both he & Matt Lee are still currently on the roster as a Senior & Junior. Neither can manage to break into the lineup. Joe is listed at 174 which is manned by 3X NCAA Champ Carter Starocci, and Matt is listed at 165 which is currently being filled by RSFR Mitchell Mesenbrink - PSU's newest phenom.

Just goes to show the depth at PSU because I’m willing to bet they could go anywhere else in the nation and start.
