shoottowin
Is it a common practice for some coaches to inflate their wrestlers' records, for seeding purposes?

isaiah11
In some cases that may be true. But most of the time it is the fortunate outcome of an exceptional wrestler on a poor team. Because the coach feels the best way to compete is to keep a moderate to low level of competition, for newer or less experienced kids motivated, this allows the outstanding wrestler to get a lot of wins. littlevito
It usually plays itself out. Every year in our sectional there is a team that has inflated records and grabs a couple high seeds, and those kids usually don't make it out of sectional. CoachM
This seems to be becoming more prevalent with teams starting to include varsity B matches, attending tournaments with smaller programs that may not have the talent level of others. Kids seem to be attending these meets instead of others to get 5 wins instead of going 3-2 at the higher quality meets. It has obviously always occured but this makes it easier to slip these kids into sectional seeds without wresling any real competition and no common opponents.
