When compared to the teams of the early 00's, MD is down. They haven't had a state champ since 05, but you can't put that on Coach Schaeffer. I think they hit a little dry spell talent wise, but there are a bunch of really good kids coming up through the feeder system. They will be consistent contenders for the state title for several years to come, although nobody will rip off 9 in a row ever again. Especially with the elimination of team state.
And for Wrestler100. If MD lost that winning instinct, I highly doubt they would have opted to bump up to 3A for the IHSWCA state duals. They easily could have stayed in 1A and ran off 15-20 titles in a row there. But they chose to bump up to wrestle with the best in the state.
MD vs. Griffith in 2003. If I'm not mistaken, there were 9 wrestlers in that dual that won a total of 21 individual state titles.
MD's comeback win over Hobart with pins at 215 and 275 to pull out a 3 point win. Great dual.
Just some guys that I think need mentioned.
1. Gil Journey, PM - sooo fast. Thought for sure he would get one his senior year
2. Craig Macke, EMD - 4x making it to the semi's. If not for Angel, he is a 2x champ
3. John Boes, Princeton - big time thrower. Dominated people his last 2 years.
4. Rusty Head, EMD
5. Toby Turner, Monrovia
6. Jamie Murray, Decatur Central
Come out to Mater Dei on Super Bowl Sunday and watch opening day for the feeder league. You will see nearly 300 kids take to the mats representing the schools that feed MD.
You say we steal kids from Reitz? I believe that Reitz has a kid in their varsity line up that wrestled for 2 years at MD. However, you cannont find one kid that was in the reitz feeder league anywhere in the MD wrestling room.
126, people forget how good Macke was. The guy made a t lest the semi-finals every year. if not for Escobedo, he's likely a 2x champ.
132 - Coughlin by a large margin
138 - Scott was good, he gets the win here
145 - If not for Tsirtsis, Weinzapfel is a 3x champ. Let's not forget that he but Tsirtsis on his back in that semi-final match they had.
152 - Nosko, maybe by pin
160 - Really good match. Wildeman was a brute. He abused Jimmy Schultz in the semi's that year. Completely manhandled him.
170 - nobody beats Maurer. He did lose one match in Indiana in his career. He lost early in his soph year to Cooper from Bloom. S.
Perry doesn't win a match in this stretch. MD probably picks up 2 more wins in the other 7 match ups.
I agree with what you say, I just think it is a surprising choice. It isn't every day that you see a kid ranked #1 in the country, that has had success on the national stage, choose an NAIA school. For me, if I'm spending the time and money on camps, travel, etc. then I'm hoping it pays off with a D1 scholarship.
Coaches Snyder and Peck....I would suggest that you pick up a phone and call each other to discuss your differing opinions instead of arguing like a couple of school girls. Seeing the coaches of two highly respected programs arguing like this makes me think we have no hope at all in doing anyting about this.
Leave the arguing to the fans.
I'd definitely put Schaeffer over Stevenson. Not even close. Just overlooked that one.
And Coughlin's national resume gives him the edge over Cassidy.
One more: Jackson, Kelvin (And Highland) State Champ, NCAA Champ
I really have no problem with Bubba's celebration. Not really my style, but I didn't see anything wrong with it. It was done well after the match, Taylor and the PSU coaches had already left the mat, and he didn't do anything to belittle his opponent. Cut the guy some slack.
