  1. And, after retiring from North Central, was key in Hamilton Heights HS finding success.
  2. In most cases you can point fingers at changes in leadership. Special programs have special leaders; it really is that simple.
  3. Ya know, wrestling teams did thrive in Indiana long before the team tournament existed. The Cathedral vs Delta matches of the mid 1980s are proof of that. Of course I am sad to see team state go, but the sport will thrive, and we will once again find excitment in team scores, bonus points, heros, and spoliers at the state meet. I know it isn't perfect, but it will be fun in a different way.
  4. The wrestling season (Sorry Y2, "class of" was not the appropriate term) of 2003 is MAYBE the deepest Indiana has ever seen. There are some major names in that tournament: Tsirtis (All-American) Hernandez (All-American) Escebedo (NCAA Champ, All-American, Current International Success, Olympic Team Contender) Coughlin (All-American) Humphrey (All-American, World Team Member) Dolly (Current Success at International Level) O'Brien (Big Success in UFC) Mauer (4x state champ, had injuries not sidelined him at Ohio State.....) I am sure there are other names I missed, but saying Indiana now is better than Indiana then is highly dubious. The entire state, from the Region, to Indianapolis, to Evansville, was producing an insane amount of talent. What EMD did that year was incredible. That being said, if any team can top them, I hope it is Coach Tonte's Falcons.
  5. Coaches: This is just a small request from Indiana wrestling fans from all over the globe. After all, there are a number of us who love to follow our old schools, friends who still coach, kids we once coached, conferences, big rivalries, etc... There are many who have left Indiana for work, for families, are serving in the Middle East?you get the idea. This year, please take a minute find an eager volunteer (parent, manager, assistant coach, wannabee assistant coach, sibling, etc?). Give them a really cool title such as ?Varsity Online Presence Engineer? or ?Marketing Director of the Interwebs.? Then, make it their mission to post good, complete results to this web site as soon as possible. Maybe check that they have an iPhone or Blackberry, and challenge them to get results up on the bus ride home. Heck, if they are really efficient they could also email local media outlets and get your wrestler?s names in the paper. Seriously, a number of threads mention growing our sport?s fan base- especially in the wake of losing team state. A great way to start is to not make the fans wait and/or beg for complete event results. If you host a tournament, please include teams scores and all place winners; dual meets necessitate individual results. This is especially true if you are hosting a high profile event. Trackwrestling a great tool for real time results, but is not the best when it comes to seeing the big picture. Posting on this site allows us to see the entire state on one screen (so to speak). Finally, please delegate this duty to someone as you already have way too much to do. Simply stated, we want to celebrate your successes, cheer on our team, and at times, feel a connection to our home state. Thanks in advance, Matt S. (Currently Jakarta, Indonesia)
  6. Florida has a three class individual state tournament where the team scored is also kept. There is no team dual meet tournament. I believe Fort Myers High School once won a state championship after winning very few dual meets and finishing 4th in their district and and 3rd in their regional. I believe they had four state champs that year. Brandon is a 3A school, though at the time of THE STREAK they may of been a 2A and South Dade 3A. No matter, Brandon is the real deal as are a few schools in Florida.
  7. I agree IU has some issues that seem to plague them every year. The most obvious is mid and low level all Americans who do not progress or almost seem to digress by their senior year. Nonetheless they have also has a TON of positive achievements in the last few years: IU owned 125 for a while, continually putting wrestlers on the NCAA podium, etc... This year's Big 10 tourney is very disappointing- outside of Kinser, Prowess, and Young. Hopefully Prowess can win his last match and save the Hoosiers from losing to MSU too. To consistently crack the top six of the Big Ten is a huge feat for any program. For now, IU and Purdue are not going to beat Iowa, Penn State, and Minny. That leaves three spots, and if we consider that Ohio State, Michigan (they have had one bad year) and Wisconsin's history, one can see finishing in the top six in the Big Ten is a huge task. Oh, we have to add Nebraska to the mix next year. Right now it seems Purdue is on a upward tick from where they were a few years ago, and IU is slipping with their light weights with the loss of Coach Mena. Hopefully a year or two more experience and recruiting with Coach Dubuque (sp?) will get IU back on track. Don't forget they have a decent shot of three All-Americans this year which would be awesome.
  8. The state tourney begins with sectionals.
  9. We can just agree to disagree. American Idol is competition. Cross-country is a sport. Wrestling, boxing, etc... is a completely different animal.
  10. If you look at the IHSAA site for enrollment and consider the big picture one gets a very different view of how well big schools do in the individual tournament... If one looks at the schools with multiple state champions, there are very few small schools. In fact, if one considers schools with more than five state champs in their history, there are all of two small schools- and only one is public (Beech Grove). The other is obviously EMD which isn't really all that small a school. In fact, the ten biggest schools combine for 102 state champions in their history. I used the IHSAA basketball enrollment for classifications for 2007-2011. Im sure some enrollments have flipped around, but it paints a very clear picture that big schools win most of the titles. I will venture that the 102 smallest schools in Indiana do not have ten state champs between them, but I will have to check that out when I have more time. You can see the list here: http://www.ihsaa.org/dnn/Sports/Boys/Wrestling/StateFinalsRecords/tabid/321/Default.aspx
  11. Its not a sexual issue- if two guys can wrestle and it not be sexual than a guy and a girl can wrestle and it not be sexual. The issue is that it is wrong to violently go after a woman....period...end of story. I don't care if she is "asking for it" by spitting at you, hitting you, calling your mom bad names, or being a wrestler (I am sure there are some extreme exceptions like she has a knife to a child's throat, etc...). I, for one, could never go after a woman with the same intensity I did when I competing. I think most young men feel this way, or at least I hope they do. Bottom line is one cannot win when wrestling a girl. You either lose or you beat up a girl- I see no victory in either. I do think it stinks that there are very limited wrestling opportunities for women to wrestle women in Indiana, but there are options in similar sports- judo, taekwondo, etc...
  12. Is there any talk about where he will go after high school?
  13. Is there anywhere to stream just the audio?
  14. Who was that and who did he compete for?
  15. I just want to add that the posts by both coaches in this thread are very cool. Much respect to Tipton and and Tech.
  16. Class response. Best of luck to you.
  17. Who and when was the last team to beat Cathedral in the city tournament? I am guessing it was Roncali or maybe Manual, but reserve the right to be wrong. Thanks in advance.
  18. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Carmel wins this tourney in the same fashion as Cathedral wins the City tournament every year. Perhaps the margins wont be as big, but y'all get the point.
  19. Rankingsguy- Your position surprises me as I usually enjoy what you post. I 1000% agree that hiding your lineup is futile, but I gotta respectfully call you on your position about coaches... 1. Don Patton did way more than simply coach out of a "book" as you imply. He was an amazing leader at Delta. 2. For every college wrestler who took over and created a solid program we can also cite just as many who have run programs into the ground. 3. Lawrence North was and is maybe the best program in Indiana for the last 25 years (EMD is the obvious other choice) . I am taking nothing away from Coach Humphrey by saying LN was incredible long before he arrived. 4. There are a many great coaches in the last 20 years with little to zero wrestling experience. The two I admire most were Coach Goebel (EMD) and Coach Feigart (Beech Grove). 5. Some of the "resurgence" you mention are programs that never really went went away... The best programs are run by great leaders and motivators who draw kids in and make them believe in tradition and a system... some of them did well at the college level. However, to say that college success is a prerequisite to winning is simply not the case.
  20. I posted this elsewhere: This is just the tip of the iceberg. Pay attention to what almost happened in Florida as far right neo cons (please note I didn't say Republicans or conservatives) begin the process of taking apart public education in favor of privatization (see charter schools) and profitable standardized testing (masked as accountability). The writing is clearly on the wall.

  22. Sorry. Brandon is a 3A school- up from a couple of years from 2A. They bounce back and forth beteween the 2 classes. 2 A was won by Oviedo in Orlando and 1A by Gulf in New Port Richey. FHSAA 3-A WRESTLING FINALs Team Scores February 19-20, 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. BRANDON 239.50 2. OSCEOLA (Kissimmee) 134.50 3. AMERICAN (Hialeah) 132.00 4. COLUMBUS (Miami) 101.00 5. SOUTH DADE (Homestead) 89.00
  23. No. Brandon is a 3A school- the biggest division. It is a smaller 3A school and on occasion dips into 2A, but one has to remember there are schools many in SE Florida and Orlando that are bigger than BD, NC, Carmel, etc... Consequently Florida's 2A is full of giant schools too. Brandon's enrollment is right around 2100, a big school by any one's standards and one of the Bigger schools on the west coast of FLA.
  24. Posted by kingfelix34 on the Florida wrestling board (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=376&f=1462&t=5667340): "I had a chance to watch the IN state finals this past weekend and see # 19 Mishawaka. They won with ease, but were completely classless. They had a team point deducted when one of their wrestlers did a planned celebration dance after winning an OT match, had fans flipping off another wrestler, and were among the most obnoxious, least disciplined teams I have ever been around. I couldn't help but wish that they would get out of their tiny circle and travel this way to wrestle some of the better FL teams. Brandon is light years better.....Oviedo is better, and from the small amount I have watched Springstead they are better. Osceola and American also, in my opinion, looked better. I've only been here for three years, but there is talent and a love for the sport in this state and it gets me pumped. It seems that each year it is growing and competition keeps improving, and that speaks volumes to the ppl who are making it what it is here." Same guy as FLwrestling? You be the judge. No matter- the irony is that Florida wrestling is about as ugly, shady, and lowdown as it gets. If you aint cheatin', recruitin' and findin' loopholes, the you aint tryin'. I know from experience. I will, however, say this about Florida: Brandon is really, really, really good. Like scary good. I should also say that I met many great coaches too- several who also have Indiana connections.
