There are 3 level to this:

    - kid is in school early (Graduate at 17)

    - kid is in school in the optimal grade (Graduate at 18)

    - kid is in school and can not repeat grade and compete (hold-back) (Graduate at 19)

There are about 10 different variables that go into parents holding their kids back.  Some parents weight variables higher than others!  There is no right answer, but simply what is BEST for the kid!

    Every situation is different!

In my situation, my son was put in school too early (category 1 on this list).  In the 2nd grade he was doing poorly on the educational pillars (Math and Reading).  So after winter break, we decided for him to be put back in the 1st grade putting him, using my verbiage, in the optimal grade.    Optimal may not be the best term to use in this situation, just what i came up with.

Again, every situation is different.  As a parent who has worked in schools for over the last 24 years as a coach and/or staff member, I see parents (especially males) putting their kids in school later more than in the past.

    Best wishes to all!

Very well written. Situations are different from everyone. Wish the best of luck to all the athletes in this sport that compete and gain the valuable life lessons that come along with it.

Alec White had a murderer's row to win his senior year (126 lbs, 2017)

Knocked off 2x champ Colton Cummings on Friday night, beat eventual champions Matt Lee and Graham Rooks in the quarters and semis respectively, and capped it off with a fall over 3x semi-finalist Blake Mulkey.

That was a pretty tough weight that year and the hardest semi-final match I ever had to watch on the other side of him.

I'm pretty sure it had to be submitted today but the last weigh-in had to take place before today. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Submitted today, yes. Look at each individual's weekly weight program, this week is #12 and you can enter a weight for today. The way I interpreted is an extra day for a qualifying green weigh-in. I may be wrong, and hope to be corrected if so.

  4. Looks like this Elementary State Championship qualifier is going to be hosted on the same day, in the same place. This was already a pretty long event in the past few years, get ready for it to be crowded and I am guessing a very long day. Not sure what purpose this Elementary tournament serves, is it not basically the same thing as ISWA State, right? No knock against Hobart, I think they will do a great job hosting, but you put that many people in one place and you are asking for some chaos.

  5. I am just speculating, but since the weight management program ends on Monday, Wednesday was the best possible day to have the meeting. If a team decided to have a meet on Monday, that would give us a whole day, Tuesday, to update records and head to head. Last year was the first year that the weight management program was extended to Monday.

  6. I will start off first by saying to @littlevito, hats off my guy, huge task to take on doing rankings and seeds. Thanks for doing the best possible job given the info at your disposal. I am guessing those duties will be spread out moving forward. Thank you for spearheading it.

The NW Regional was insane as far as time. Walked into my house from that Regional at 1:15am, and I gained an hour heading back home. Definitely room to improve, but in the end, the numbers were just way too much to handle. Talking with others in attendance, my ideal solution would be to add a third tier to this tournament next year. Sectional, Regional, State for next year. I think this could be a natural progression into the type of tournament it will be once it is sanctioned by the IHSAA and it more than likely adds a fourth tier like their boy counterparts.

I definitely do not see this running with the boys, and it should not be in my opinion. That would be a disservice to these young ladies who deserve to be showcased on their own. Plus, based on the way IHSAA does things, highly unlikely. Hey, what a great problem to have though as the numbers continue to explode. Definitely see more growth in the future and excited to see where this will go!

Wish the IHSAA would help and not count the event towards the competition points as I believe they still do(correct me if I'm wrong). I'd love for it to be like football & etc with sectionals/regional to earn a spot at state (top 8/12 teams per class) in an actual dual tournament instead of basing it on individual tournament results. Duals and individual tournaments are so different. Criteria for teams being those filling 8 weight classes.

Hmmm I like this set up, but I wonder though if teams that had no chance of winning would actually send their best team? Could be a potential problem with this set up not risking injury for individual portion of tournament.

  8. My argument will always be for Shawn. Of course there is some bias in this argument but here it goes again...

Freshman 40-6, losses at State to Donte(1-0) and Hemmelgarn(3-1)

Sophomore 44-2, loses to Wesley by Fall, his other loss was to a guy named Gelen Robinson that year.

Junior 46-0, Pins everyone at State tournament

Senior 45-0, 3 Falls in State Tournamnet

Shawn was 135-2 between his Sophomore and Senior seasons. 8 losses in his career, 3 of them coming from eventual State Champs. 7 Falls in his last two State Tournaments. No one came close to him his last two years. When talking about the best to ever do it at the weight class, he has to be considered in the conversation.

  9. In about 2 years when this is sanctioned and we have a more solid base of tournaments, meaning we know where and what weekends they will be, who is attending them...if then there is still an issue with girls not being seeded, then I will agree, ridiculous. I do agree that ideally, your last match in a tournament should be a pretty competitive one if there is some separation criteria implemented. I do want to reiterate I also agreed that a simple criteria could be implemented to solve this issue.

I guess my discussion here is how important is it really if they are still getting a quality match? SSHS,  I agree that the drop-off in ability is huge in girls wrestling, as I have found it to be in most women's sports. The pool is just not as deep as the boys side and the different tiers of talent level have some big drop offs. Seeded or unseeded, that quality match is more than likely going to happen at some point and 2-3 other matches may be completely dominated by the better girls. Quite frankly, I am just happy to see more tournaments being hosted and these ladies getting an opportunity to showcase their talents.

  10. I do think as we progress to the sanctioning of Girls wrestling, you will see more tournaments using a seeding criteria when hosting a tournament. Although it seems like a simple separation criteria could solve the problem, at this point, what does it matter if you wrestle them early or later, it is still a quality match that they are wrestling.

My hats off to all of the schools that have hosted a tournament this year. Running any type of tournament can be challenging, I am sure there will be hiccups. Kudos to those that stayed and showed some patience.

  11. Hard to bet against Streck, I think people forget his State tournament resume....

    2x State Champ

3rd as a Sophomore and 7th as a Freshman (both years with a loss to eventual champs Bernard and Winfield)

Had a total of 8 falls in his 4 years at the tournament.

I think he gets tucked away sometimes in talks of Best big guys of all time. He was a pretty athletic and quick big guy he did not wrestle like a traditional heavyweight.

  12. We need to seriously evaluate the way that our Officials in Indiana move up through the ranks, not just in wrestling but across all sports. I say this because it was explained to me that our system is implemented by the IHSAA. For those that are not aware of our system, you have to have "x" amounts of tournaments at each level before you can move on to the next. I think in a time that we are being told our Officials are getting older and more scarce, that we start to reward our better young Officials with ascending through our tournament series more quickly. I mean what is the point of rating a guy a "semi-state" level if he can not even officiate one? Oh, and while I am on my soapbox here, we should also have a minimum number of slots that are reserved in which we vote the best officials in the State. How crazy is it some of the guys we consider the best have to sit out every two years, I think this is the time frame, someone correct me if I am wrong. If we want our best wrestlers there, then we should want our best Officials there as well. In our current system, it is possible that you can reach an NCAA Championships faster than you can our IHSAA State Finals.

I am not saying to blow the whole system up, there are pros and cons, as such with anything. However, we should really look into tweaking this system, so we can reward these younger up and coming stud Officials that we are talking about in this thread.

  13. Hopefully all of the events surrounding this weekend will be held at the more spacious and more $eating of Lucas Oil Stadium. Guess we will have to wait and see.

UPDATE: Well, looked it up myself and does appear it will be at Gainbridge. Last time it was hosted by Indy was 1985, but it was at the Hoosier Dome.

Thank you! Braxton is doing well now! He did completely dislocate his elbow out of socket and was able to get in set back in once he got to the ER. We are glad it was nothing more with how bad it was at the moment!

Thanks to all who have reached out and checked in!

Coach, thanks for the update. All of our guys were concerned and will be glad to hear he is doing well.
