  1. I would like to take a minute to recognize the Heritage Hills coaching staff, and specifically head coach Matt Thompson, for the ethical response in which he responded to an unfortunate incident in which one of his wrestlers was injured in a quarter final match Saturday morning during the IHSAA championships. The Heritage Hills wrestler was taken to the mat with his arm tied and no way to defend himself. The forceful landing resulted in both the injury, as well as an Unnecessary Roughness call (Note... there was no call for an Illegal Move or Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty). The Recovery Time was started, and it was determined that the injured wrestler could not continue, however, rather than accept victory via disqualification, Coach Thompson and his staff ended the Recovery Time situation voluntarily and chose to Injury Default. It was obvious that the offending wrestler did not intend to hurt his opponent, and Coach Thompson and his staff recognized this as well and chose not to let an accident end the season of the opposing wrestler, The Heritage Hills wrestler subsequently defaulted to eighth place, as his injury did not allow him to continue in the tournament. Thank you Coach Thompson and Heritage Hills High School for your sportsmanship and decision to do the right thing. An Exemplary Sportsmanship Report was filed with the IHSAA and your school's administration by the mat official to recognize your effort
  2. Brian Bailey, Martinsville and Toby Turner, Monrovia ??? : :)
  3. At the ASOA meeting in Indianapolis on Sunday, February 12, it was passed unanimously that Indiana wrestling officials would switch to the gray official's shirts for next season. The National Federation approved the switch four years ago, however, Indiana was one of 3-4 states that had yet to make the switch.
  4. Condolences to Coach Harper and his family.
  5. Was that an IndianaMat.com fleece pullover he was wearing, or just that Grizzly Adams beard he has been working on all winter???
  6. The Indiana Officials Association will host their annual Coaches Panel Meeting on Monday, January 16, 2012. All officials and coaches are invited to attend. Location: Knights of Columbus 2100 E. 71st Street Indianapolis 7:00PM EST Start
  7. I have worked all 11 Lake County tournaments and I have to say that Hanover Central did an amazing job hosting the meet. The AD, Jeff Brooks, and Coach Nick Petrov had a fantastic turnout of parents, alumni and former wrestlers on hand to assist with the tournament, hospitality room, and awards. Kudos to Calumet Coach Jim Wadkins and Region Wrestling Academy's Bill Hawkins for their contributions, and the announcer, Mike Roe, did a really nice job during the meet, as well as with the tribute to Coach John Willems and his family. PS I'll go back for the hospitality room alone.... some good grub! ;D
  8. No... his coach said he was staying at 106.
  9. 1. Lake Central 2. Hanover Central 3. Hobart
  10. To clarify... it was not a defensive pin, as both wrestlers were in the neutral position. The official called the fall but checked with the timekeeper, who advised that the time had expired prior to the fall being called. Great call, and it was handled the way the official is supposed to handle it when it's that loud and crazy.... check with your timer
  11. Lake County Championships at Hanover Central HS, Saturday Jan 7, 2012
  12. Trey Blackwell was there with the team, but in street clothes
  13. Great man, great coach, and great mentor.... RIP John.
  14. I spoke to the Fairhaven Coach at the Lafayette Harrison tournament in November, and he advised me that they have applied to the IHSAA, but there are "technical difficulties" that first need to be worked out. Fairhaven is located just north of Chesterton, so I would assume that they would be a part of the Laporte Sectional if/when they are admitted to the IHSAA. They are a K-12 school and have a high school enrollment of around 100 students, but less than 25 males.
  15. Originally scheduled was Griffith, Kankakee Valley, Highland, East Chicago Central, Whiting, Hammond Morton, Andrean, and Hebron. I am not sure, however, which team dropped out.
  16. Maybe Mr. Al Smith himself ??? Coach Smith provides great commentary!
  17. Last year Forrest Park was there, but I don't believe Bosse was a participant.
  18. This kid was pretty amazing at the IndianaMat preseason open.... FOCUSED!
  19. DuneFan likes My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, Car 52 Where Are You, and Doby Gillis.... PS Plus, Dancing With The Stars
  20. I spoke to John's wife Carol this AM. He is at St Anthony Hospital in Crown Point. Although still in the ICU they are hoping to move him to a regular room this afternoon. He had a stint put in to relieve some bloackage, but is otherwise doing well. In true John Todd fashion, he still had his striped shirt and whistle with him ;D
