  1. This is really interesting and well done. Will make sure our AD sees this. I don't think that the large schools would find anything objectionable in here either?
  2. Rianne is the real deal. In NWI there's a bjj school that easily has the best kids competition team in the Midwest and a national travel team that is top 10 in the country. Saturday classes focus on wrestling and bring in local high school wrestlers, coaches, etc. Bjj is notorious for teaching "guard pulling" and de-emphasizing takedowns, so these kids were blowing away the competition with their wrestling to get the match to the ground. Rianne was among the first in a group of kids there that cross-trained in wrestling who are now making their way into the high school ranks and progressing very quickly. At least three of the placers at girls state got their start with this group. Four or five boys from the same group made it into the EC Semistate. Most of them "pause" their bjj careers in high school to focus on wrestling and will train at RWA and intend to circle back to the bjj after college. The two sports are very complementary and give kids a great sense of body mechanics, mat awareness and make them very coachable. So, even with limited ability to train a lot of freestyle, you'll see these kids get thrown into a tournament and you can literally watch them figure it out after a match a two (you want me to lace their legs and do what?). The college coaches I've talked to notice this and are quick to point out that these are kids who haven't yet "peaked" and still have a lot of upside in a good college program. Rianee was a pioneer in this group and the furthest advanced at having combined the two. I would not bet against seeing her emerge as a strong contender for a spot in the next two Olympic cycles (after this one).
  3. ^^THIS^^ At the highest level BJJ tournaments, you must wear street shoes to the bathroom. If spotted not following this rule, you can be disqualified. Similarly, if spotted wearing street shoes on the mat, you can be disqualified. I would even love to see coaches who are on the mats pre-tournament either bring a pair of wrestling shoes or at least be in their socks. Another big difference this year was that fans, parents and siblings didn't have access to the competition floor. This significantly cut down on the number of kids running about on the mats and Cousin Larry showing off the move that worked for him in the 1987 Nowheresville District 2A qualifier. The mats are for the wrestlers.
  4. One last thing about those Indiana wrestler numbers . . . remember that a growing number of those Indiana wrestlers are now girls. I think that number is close to 300-ish now and growing every year?
  5. I don't understand why we can't have our cake and eat it too. Running the state series based on geography is arbitrary. Why not run it based on two classes? Week three (what is now semi-state week) of the state series would be to determine top 8 Class Champions. Then the placers from the Class Championships go to "Super State" at the Bank in week four. Come to think of it, we could probably use this system to cut an entire week out of the state series (there's no need for 32 sectionals in my view . . . way too many half-filled brackets or less). If I had a free afternoon to overlay the math on a map, I could probably figure it out. Or maybe I can't.
  6. My personal favorite: Body Movin' by the Beastie Boys (not for getting aggressive out of your mind hyped, but keeps you loose and "flowy") Pantera was when you need get your angry-energy up to a level that was borderline homicidal. Some of the youngsters this year seemed to favor Headlocc by some dude named Yella Beezy (yes, I had to look that up). I will now return to being old and complaining about the snow.
  7. For maximum fan excitement and athlete danger, let's add an absolute division where you throw out the weight classes and make a bracket where all the champs fight each other. Or, go full WWE and have a Royal Rumble. Put 'em all in a cage and last man standing wins. Fans can throw things at them too. Like airplanes. Or bananas?
  8. Congrats, Sarah! Proud to have gotten to know you and your family. With this kind of family, work ethic, faith foundation, smarts and mental attitude, the sky is the limit for you no matter what you choose to do next.
  9. Comparing official high school events and some of the "club" level events operated by third parties is like comparing apples and oranges. At one pre-season club event I attended that had all age groups, duals and individual there were WAAAAAY too many people. Snot nosed tikes running about, grandparents in wheelchairs, people crowding the mats, etc. Even in a non-pandemic year, these things sometimes feel like a loosely organized prison fight. On the opposite end of the spectrum, all of the official high school events we've participated in have been well organized. Attendance limited to immediate family (parents and siblings). Seating generally grouped by team, etc. People being generous, smart and giving each other their space. Host schools kept extra cleaning staff on hand to continuously wipe down commonly touched surfaces. With the regular season now over, I would suggest that what the Indiana High School wrestling teams, coaches, schools have pulled off this year was an incredible success. We did NOT hear reports of massive spread between wrestlers in practice, duals or tournaments. We did NOT hear any stories about getting fans in attendance sick. Wrestling is a misunderstood sport even in good times. At a lot of schools, even our principals and ADs were skeptical about whether wrestling should proceed. But we did what wrestlers do. We looked at the rules, added our own common sense, stayed focused and disciplined. People didn't think we could pull it off, but we did. Not hanging a "victory" banner just yet, but just look at what we accomplished. We should give ourselves a little credit (because nobody else will!).
  10. Or perhaps the idea is by separating weight classes into "sessions," it actually allows MORE family member tickets per wrestler? That was the concept behind some of the pre-season tournaments we attended. You'd clear the facility out between sessions and the next group of competitors and fans would then be permitted in. Not saying it's a good or bad idea, but might be part of the thinking going on here . . .
  11. Congrats to Sarah. Great wrestler, great family and overall wonderful person. A true champion in every sense.
  12. To confirm what I think I understand from the update up top . . . Correct me if I get any of this wrong!?! 1. Regionals are still same time and same place as previously announced. 2. State Finals are being moved from Kokomo to Hamilton Heights. Time changes from morning to late afternoon (3 p.m. weigh in). 3. For ALL events, wrestlers are permitted two parents. Teams are permitted 2 coaches for 5 or less girls and 3 coaches for 6 or more girls. Let me know if I got that right!
  13. Looking forward to watching this. Should be some good match ups! What time is the event on Dec. 30?
  14. Watched this a few days ago. It's good family friendly holiday fare with lessons about winning, losing and forgiveness. The plot was a little slow for the first half and picked up nicely in the second half. The match at the end was really well choreographed. Correct rules, correct points, correct names given to various moves. Actors who clearly put in the work to learn how to move like wrestlers. I hate it when movies get those kinds of details wrong and you go, um, that's not how wrestling works. But in this case they got it mostly right and helped make it entertaining for people who actually know the sport!
  15. Know it wasn't super easy to get approved, but the crew at Penn today pulled off a nice girls tournament. Good, clean and efficient. Was happy to see the girls getting some matches. Several of the ranked girls looked super sharp and couple of newcomers showed really well and surprised some folks. Well done. Thanks, Penn.
  16. Great idea, Gary. Very creative way to fill in the schedule, get some more matches and put on a good show!
  17. The interesting technicality here is that this facility is technically a native american, tribally owned property by Ho-Chunk Nation. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.
  18. I've heard nothing recently and last I heard, they didn't seem interested in reducing the number of qualified weigh-ins for boys, so seems unlikely that the girls number would change either. A bit of a pain, but not hard to piggy-back an extra weigh in or two onto a boys dual or something if needed. BTW. Lebanon Tournament this weekend was very safe, clean, efficient and well run. Proving that with good management this IS possible. A lot of people there asking if Penn is still on . . . would be good to see that update somewhere too?
  19. Thanks to the Lebanon HS team for pulling off a safe, efficient tournament. Very well managed and nicely run. Bravo.
  20. That's my experience too. At one dual this week, the AD was roaming the stands threatening to kick people out for wearing masks incorrectly and would insist on misting the mats after every match. At another, it ran like a normal dual with only slight modifications to seating, hand sanitizing and one quick wipe of the mats halfway through. At yet another, the AD walked into the coaches meeting and essentially told us that he disagreed with wrestling happening at all. Now imagine how differently each of these ADs might handle contact tracing. One will look for every excuse to sit a bunch of guys if they hear a sneeze at the other end of the gym. Others, will be more measured. Frustrating, yes. But what isn't these days?
  21. Thanks for the update. Random Q: Do weigh-ins for this count toward the IHSAA six required for state sectionals? I assume it counts toward the four required for the IHSGWA regional/state series. Just don't know whether they cross over and count for "boys" state too.
  22. As I've always understood it, after Dec. 26, the growth allowance is applied to the weight classes, not individuals. So the qualifying weight for 106 becomes 108, regardless of how many matches or weigh-ins an individual wrestler has had. For the state series (from the rulebook), beginning with sectionals, wrestlers must have achieved a minimum of six (6) qualified weigh-ins throughout the regular season. One of the six qualifying weigh-ins must be during the month of January. Additionally, of the six qualifying weigh-ins, one must be at scratch weight for the weight class entered into the IHSAA tournament series.
  23. Thanks for keeping us updated. Very much appreciated.
  24. Looks like it would offer the wearer good protection, but also looks like you could really punish your opponent's face with the top of that thing.
  25. IHSAA winter sports bulletin published last week still calls for 6 qualified weigh-ins to qualify for state tournament series. As it stands today, our team's schedule only includes 6 duals and a super dual, so that's definitely going to be tight. First dual isn't even until Dec. 2. God forbid a kids out sick or injured for a week. Or forced to quarantine for two weeks because of "suspected contact" with a COVID case. But let's be honest here, if things keep headed the way they are now . . . doesn't feel like there's a scenario where suddenly school districts feel comfortable hosting big multi-team tournaments by last week of January. I don't want to be this pessimistic, somebody tell me it's all going to be ok!
