wrestleliferfan reacted to Y2CJ41 in Semi State Question
TThere are 12 different bracket combinations
A, B, C, D = Regional or SS
1, 2, 3, 4 = Placement
For instance A1B4 is a first round match with the A regional's 1st place finisher and B regional's 4th place finisher.

Number 1's wrestle number 4's and number 2's wrestle number 3's but we wont know which regionals are paired for each weight until probably Sunday or later.

They will draw for which regionals are paired, but won't be released until after regionals so coaches/athletes don't try to manipulate the results in their favor to avoid certain matchups.

wrestleliferfan reacted to runner-up in Sectional Seeding Criteria Question
Per the rules "the main objective of seeding is to have outstanding wrestlers separated in the brackets so that they will not meet each other until the finals." I think that the rule writers assume that a wrestler who was on the cusp of making it to the state meet the previous year defines you as an outstanding wrestler.
10 matches qualifies you to be seeded, thus that is the 1st question. Next is head to head competition followed by common opponents. So if a returning semi-state quarterfinalist has lost to someone else in the sectional or has a worse record vs common opponents, he/she would NOT be seeded over his opponent he lost to or has had more common opponent success than--provided said wrestler meets the seeding criteria.

Thanks. I’m a second year parent in high school wrestling and just trying to educate myself on the technical aspect of wrestling, seeding, brackets, and this whole weight rules and seeding criteria from IHSAA. Appreciate it!

wrestleliferfan reacted to Holden in Sectional Seeding Criteria Question
I don't know the situation at all, but maybe he couldn't be the varsity 152 and bumping to 160 was the only way to get into the lineup. Maybe he knew he was going to drop down so he had to weigh close to 145 to do it legally. Just one possibility.
-
wrestleliferfan reacted to SWSpectator in Sectional Seeding Criteria Question
Maybe his weight loss plan didn't allow him to make scratch at 145 until this late in the season, and if he couldn't beat his teammate at 152, he would have to bump to 160 to make the lineup. Just a possibility.

It's sad when you see two top seed wrestlers wrestling each other in the ticket round. When they both deserve to be advancing!

Good example for your wrestlebacks. Go see 138 bracket at Fort Wayne, need I say more?
Rutter, Fiechter, Jamarri, Wells, all good wrestlers. Clearly Rutter should be state bound!

People like going to the casino because of a random lucky chance to win and thats fun. When i go to state wrestling tournament, i like watching the best wrestlers match up, not the luckiest wrestlers.

So if you like the current system you have to be in favor of kids getting screwed? Comments like this are ignorant, plain and simple. We are all here because we love this sport and want what is best for it. We don't have to agree on everything, but to pretend we don't care about those participating because of whether or not we like wrestle backs is just plain dumb.

Your ideas of what is Fun and Beautiful could not be more different than mine. Just because that is how it is doesn't mean that is how it should be.

Hey open your eyes we aren't saying kids didn't deserve to advance. We aren't saying that kid didn't earn his spot or do what needed to be done to go. We are saying that you should not have two top seed wrestlers wrestling in the ticket round. Restructure those brackets and those two would both be advancing! Get an open mind and quit reading to respond; read to listen to the other side!

It's rather annoying to see people who've never wrestled try to explain their position on why wrestle-backs shouldn't be a thing. Safe to say, they're clueless. So, if we can't have wrestle-backs, let's at least try to get a more focused effort on seeding so we can somehow get the best wrestlers advanced.

I have been an advocate for wrestlebacks and think the discussion needs to happen and keep pushing the coaches association to fight for wrestlebacks. However, I think the discussion should happen at a later time. Saying this guy should be at state and this guy shouldn’t because of the system in place is disrespectful to the guys that did what was necessary to advance.

Wrestle-backs are needed. If we want the best tournament possible, they must be a priority. There were PLENTY of wrestlers yesterday who didn't advance because of terrible draws and others who advanced because of sheer luck of draws. When two top ten wrestlers are battling to a one-point decision in the ticket round and two unranked wrestlers are battling in the ticket round, it's a problem. When you're at state and a wrestler places eighth with a 1-3 record, it's a problem. Compare results with any state or even the NCAA. All placers in tournaments have at least a .500 or winning record at the tournament. In Indiana, you can have a losing record and still be considered a state finisher. It's beyond flawed.

OK, I'm not trying to dis those who do the rankings.
Wrestlebacks are the only true way to ensure the 4 most deserving wrestlers on a given day move on. That is what I want to see.
-
wrestleliferfan reacted to SIACfan in How about those wrestlebacks?
In their particular quarter brackets - yes.
-
wrestleliferfan reacted to SIACfan in How about those wrestlebacks?
This is where you are wrong. The only way to know for sure that the most deserving on a particular day advance is to have wrestlebacks. All we know is that the best in their particular quarter bracket yesterday advanced.

It's not 10am yet where the qualifiers are located.

wrestleliferfan reacted to Caleb Spires in How about those wrestlebacks?
That’s actually a pretty good way of putting it and for the most part I agree. But it does suck to see wrestlers that would fare better in Indy stay home while the “lucky draw” kids get to move on. But if the IHSAA doesn’t want to do wrestlebacks or seed semi-state brackets to try and separate the best, not much else we can do about it.

Maybe youre opinion, but i saw sone guys not advance and wrestle better than guys that advanced. Saw some guys that were better at gettibg lucky draws also today.

It has been 3 hours between a wrestler's round of 16 match and his quarterfinal match at Evansville. Add wrestle backs and they may not finish before the start of state next week. Brutal.
