  1. Not real sure how I feel about this quite yet.  Admittedly......Silas’ primary goal is making the Cadet World Team in late May/early June.  Definitely need to find some clarity as to how this could/couldn’t translate with World Team training.  Aside from that variable......we were planning on competing there this year as a Final Folkstyle tourney, chasing a match-up with Ferrari.  Definitely somewhat of an interesting curveball at the moment.

That is incorrect. Those are the 3 young men that beat us.

145: #3 Alex Mosconi loses to #1(D1) and #18 nationally Derek Glicher 7-1 to make the team score 8-9!☘️🤼‍♂️

152: #2 Elliott Rodgers loses to #2(D1) and #7 nationally Kevon Davenport 6-2 to make the team score 8-12!☘️🤼‍♂️

160: #2 Jordan Slivka loses to #1(D1) and #2 nationally Cameron Amine 7-4 to make the team score 8-15!☘️🤼‍♂️

Those are results that breed lessons.  Obviously.....it’s never ok to celebrate defeat.  But man......the Rogers & Slivka matches show a very small gap to close.  Especially Jordan’s!  That’s a solid performance against a ridiculously talented Amine.

  3. KJ is a stand up kid whose obvious humility is genuine.  This young man’s lack of overall mat time is counteracted by high level athleticism & physical strength, as well as a competive heart that don’t know “quit”.

That same humble, yet confident approach to matches, personal interaction, etc., is also shared by the Tipton coaching staff.  Silas and I had the opportunity to dialogue with those gentlemen at length last year, and have stayed in intermittent contact since.  Great people all the way around.

The Allred’s wish KJ and Tipton Wrestling best of luck the remainder of the season as they collectively push towards their goals.

Just good to see Carmel make it. A school of that size and make up should be a powerhouse year in and year out. Don’t know why schools like Ben Davis and Carmel are not on top every year. Any insight of why these schools are not top 10 consistently?

I was happy for Carmel also Matt.  Coach P being a close friend of mine, I’m aware of a lot of the issues he’s had to persevere through to begin getting things aligned in a way that breeds success.  I know you’re already aware of what isn’t the problem there.......great coaching.

Admittedly......I don’t know the Ben Davis staff.  So I can only speak on Ben Davis alum’s Coach Gill, and his commitment to CIA.  I rarely use the word “friend”, because REAL ones are hard to find.  But ironically.....both Gill & Ed are more comparable to family, than just friendship.  So in Gill’s case......I’d bet my bank account that when/if he ever decides to slow down his commitment to pumping out D1 wrestlers at CIA, and throw his hat into the high school head coaching arena, that programs struggles would improve significantly.  No disrespect to BD’s current staff.  Again, I don’t know them.  So I speak namely about the aforementioned line-up issues.....and obviously based on my experience of how Gill (and Eppert) has helped cultivate my son into one of the top wrestling prospects in the country.

Just my 2 cents.  I know I’m preaching to the choir here Matt.  I’m confident your post had nothing to do with those guys specifically.  You’ve always been too stand-up for that in all of our interaction throughout the years.  But let’s face it......many people who are unaware of your subjectivity on the matter, may raise eyebrows and get the wrong idea about what you’re implying.  So I felt led to not only give clarity about 2 of only 5 individuals I genuinely call “friend”, but to also validate your character on the matter brother. 👍🏻  Look forward to catching up with you and Garcia on Sat.

  5. Coop is a CIA kid.  So through the summer he frequently was rotating in with Silas, Winner.....and at times Dylan Lydy!  So he had 2 choices......Get beat up, or get better”. And fact is, the kid got better. Trememdous competitive heart.

He’s a great kid away from the mat as well.  Very genuine.  The Allred’s are big fans of Coop....and these early results have came as no surprise to us.  Don’t be shocked if he continues closing some small gaps and finds himself under the lights in Feb.

My son is lifting after practice daily..alternating upper and lower body. Will this help or hinder his performance if he does this throughout the season as well?

Jason.......as FCFighter indicated, everyone responds differently. Especially when factoring body types, genetics and other variables that should accompany any type of strength training regiment (in or offseason).  Specifically......sport specific exercises, diet, additional supplementation, tons of stretching, and most importantly adequate rest.

For my son Silas.....continued in season weight training has worked well.  However, we really transition from heavier lifts, to sets of no more than 60-70% of his max for higher reps.  We’ll also only do so 2 days a week.....in contrast to a full 5-6 days during National Season.

With Silas being young for his class (literally a grade ahead of where he could be).....strength gains were essential early on to ensure he didn’t get bullied on the mat. So we began the summer before his 8th grade year and haven’t looked back.  We started supplementing with 100% whey protein in 8th grade to assist recovery.  That’s still a staple.  He began utilizing creatine his freshman year.....but we’ve switched to a supplement called Mass Impact (Advocare) which consists of a healthy/safe mix of creatine, glutamine and other essential amino’s.  His body has responded well.  Eating clean and allowing at least 48hrs rest between training muscle groups has been what’s worked best for him.  I’d highly recommend tons of plyometrics, agility/footwork drills, and medicine ball circuits to well round and help translate new strength towards technique.

I can assure you that there’s no “secret sauce” for wrestler development or success.  A young athlete just needs to embrace the philosophy of “nobody will outwork me” and apply it to every facet of their life to become the best version of themselves possible.  It sounds to me like you and your son are on that similar path.  So just allow his body, as well as his mental motivation and overall drive to be the determining factor of when to push harder.....and when to ease up.  It has to stay enjoyable.  Because with the amount of pain a young man has to endure to become elite....the perspective of “why” has to be a daily reminder.  For instance.....It’s not conditioning, it’s 3rd period preparation.  It’s not about wins & losses, it’s about becoming the best “you” possible.  If you train the psychological side equally as hard as the physical......the winning will take care of itself.  And in doing so, you’ll build in your son the type of attributes that will make him a champion at life.....not just a champion at wrestling.

This is the dynamic that’s worked well for us. Hopefully some of this info can help you and your son inch closer towards your own mutual goals as well.

Really surprised he's not in Flo's new rankings this morning.

For whatever reason, 160lbs has yet to be updated.  Not sure if it’s a clerical error.....or maybe just due to that much shifting in the rankings.  The date directly above the ranked wrestler list shows when it was last updated. For 160.....it’s still showing Oct 9.  All the other weights appear to be updated last night.

Like yourself.......I fully anticipate South on the board.
