We should probably just class the individual state tournament. That would probably take care of things. I kid...

My major concern is Saturday meets...not so much in the safety, but in getting several schools together who may have varying degrees of safety measures. Hopefully our coaches and parents will react well if the host school has more stringent mask enforcement, etc. than their home school. Hosting a tournament is hard enough, let alone now, let alone if you are constantly having to ask people to follow basic safety guidelines.

One thing we are hoping to do is install 50+ hooks in the room so kids can hang their masks up and not just throw them on the ground between times of wearing them. Throwing them on the ground is not good when you can add any assortment of skin diseases to the mask along with your Covid! On top of that people need to wash their masks regularly, which I'm not sure everyone is doing.

Now on the mask issue. Masks are NOT a cure all, no one has EVER claimed they are 100% effective. Too many people think that social distancing, masks, etc are 100% effective and when they are not they claim they are worthless. Just because it isn't 100% effective doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. No vaccine is 100% effective, but it's still a REALLY good idea to get them.

The purpose of masks is to reduce the risk and more importantly to limit the amount of the virus that is expelled. If you have COVID or even the flu and the particles are filtered 80% through your mask the people than contract it through you will be affected way less due to it being a lower dosage of the virus. A simple test would be would you rather someone sneeze in your face with or without a mask on?

Lastly, if you look at schools and their COVID cases you see that they are very low. They have strict protocols and kids are wearing their masks PROPERLY, sanitizing, social distancing at a higher rate, etc. In the whole Carroll school district of about 6000+ students there have only been 20 confirmed cases between students and staff. In all honesty I'd feel much safer in a school than Wal-Mart or any other public place where people are casually adhering to the guidelines.

Praying schools can find a way to start up and get football going. This will go a long way to determine our fate.
Cases will continue to happen. My concern is that people will overreact when a positive case arises in the school.
The number of hospital admissions and deaths are the real numbers to watch.

I wonder how they will handle sickness protocols?  Like if a student has a common cold with a mild fever?  Sickness and time out until COVID is ruled out will probably cause a lot of issues.  There will be a lot of challenges for sure.

One good thing that I believe will come of this is that this generation of students will be a highly adaptable workforce when it comes to change.

I don't post often but when I do and there may be opposing views I post my name so there is no confusion where my opinion is coming from.  This is Steve Sandefer Sr.  Yes my son is the current head coach at Mishawaka, but other than that I am not an official administrator or coach at Mishawaka.  I proudly support our community, school and team.  I love wrestling and try to positively promote the sport at all levels....not just self serving to our own program.  As such I do have some disappointment and contention to see such negative comments regarding individuals within a profession that give so much to support our sport of wrestling.  The officiating crew that worked the Al Smith are top notch gentlemen that have given many many years of service to this sport.  Many of those being criticized openly on social media are Hall of Fame individuals that have literally been involved in promoting this sport most of their lives.
We will soon be reaching a crisis situation in our State if we are not able to recruit and develop young officials that will shortly be NEEDED to replace these lifelong veterans.  There is simply no way we can do this with the attitude displayed on social media by a few individuals that didn't have a match go their way this weekend.

To the simple fan or parent I can with almost 100% certainty guarantee that in the coach's meeting prior to the first match that this crew of officials explained exactly how stalling was going to be called.  Most likely with examples for each situation.  I can also assure you that 32 teams of coaches relayed this information to their wrestlers.  But lets face it....we are still dealing with high school kids.  They are still going to back up, play the outside edge, not circle in, lay on their stomachs no matter how many times a coach yells "UP", ride the hips while controlling on top without moving side to side.  The philosophy is increased action.  I get it....the call does not always go your way...but to get on a public forum and call out an entire crew for bias, call out the tournament director for being at fault, calling out a Hall of Fame Coach and official by name.....there is in my OPINION no place in this sport that allows for positive to come from that action.

If you are a wrestler on a team, a coach, a parent, an alumni of a program or just a fan...you have a responsibility to REPRESENT your program with the dignity and character your program deserves.  Again IMO that cannot be done by casting shadows over others in our sport that selflessly have given their dedication and time to simply give YOUR kids the opportunities that are necessary for them to compete in this sport.  Also keep in mind that in particular to the Al Smith Invitational...the key word is invitational.  It has always been an honor to be a team that is invited and Mishawaka considers many factors when extending those invitations.  This year was no exception and may have been the best overall field ever.  If you have valid concerns that you feel can make this a better tournament...by all means...use the proper channels and communicate that with your coaches and Athletic Departments to relay those concerns to Coach Sandefer and his Athletic Department.  Negative feelings in the heat of the moment simply shared on social media doesn't really solve anything or even make you feel better if you are honest.

Thankful for the support of our Superintendent and School Board as a few were in attendance, our Athletic Dept, Officiating Crew and table workers both days.  Our announcers Mike & Mike...Mike Reiser in the Cave and Mike Kensinger in the big boy gym.  Coaches, team, parents, fans & MHS Alum for helping to make this another great Al Smith!!  Remember I am just a FAN so don't hold my views against those that are working hard everyday for your wrestlers.  POSITIVELY PROMOTE THE SPORT.
    Steve Sandefer Sr.

That is correct as long as you have storage space available on the ipad you should be fine. We just got the program and after the first time using it this past weekend and getting use to the functions, we like it. It takes some time at first to set up, but once you us it a few times i think it will be easier and seem more user friendly.

@chambers, that's why we kept a paper running total on a separate sheet and had them sign that. Also for each dual there is a place to enter the name of the official, so my guess would be that if you have him enter his name that would count as well.
@CoachJoyce Doing multiple matches simultaneously is possible with multiple iPads. So us for example, we have 5 total iPads. I bought one and two other coaches each own one and the school provided us with two. So if JV and varsity go separate places we will send 3 iPads to one location and 2 to the other. So then when you upload them (as long as they are all on the same event) it all uploads together. So we could potentially film several mats at one time and then when you upload film from the iPad, it consolidates it under the same event.

As a side note, if you happen to miss a match or have technical difficulties and keep score on paper, you can later put the stats into MatBoss, you just won't have the video of it.

At DeKalb we started using it last year. It is a really nice program. I always like running the reports and being able to show data and sort it. Plus when tournament time comes around I can print out one sheet that has all the results for that kid throughout the year rather than going back through handwritten books. My wife does all our video and stats with it and if we have multiples going, we just have someone who isn't wrestling go to that match. We no longer have managers or a paper score book. Plus it's nice that you have a place to upload film and everyone can watch it. We do (for duals) keep a running total score on paper additionally, but we haven't run into any problems.

I too used MatBoss for the first time last year.  Myself and my coaching staff liked the data sheets we could present to our wrestlers, and that our guys have access to all their matches from their device.  The official can type in his I.D. number instead of signing in.  I also use a score book still, in case WIFI or Ipad goes down.

Been reading this thread a while now as its a topic I find very interesting, last night I was reading, a book, with pages, and words and stuff and it made me think.
I really don't think that my response here will help either side of the arguement, however shed some light coming from a different angle
Its hard for coaches when kids transfer away, no doubt, you put time into that kid and love them.  You take it personal.  I do too.  But just as some kids are born with more talent, and resources.  Some schools and coaches have more kids and resources.  Some great coaches are at schools with less resources and never get to shine, some not so great coaches are at schools with major resources and shine.  (and it works the other way too).  But in the end we take it personal.
------------------------ anyway,  lately been reading like crazy, and this was something I thought really helped me with transfers and such, as I think it describes me, and some of you, AND MANY KIDS, so bear with me   Its from DAVID AND GOLIATH from John C. Maxwell - i copy and pasted a chapter summary off the internet.    Caroline Sachs, an above-average high schooler, was trying to decide which college to attend, University of Maryland or Brown University. The challenge of picking which school she should go to was most difficult. The majority of students wouldn’t even think twice about it because attending the school with a better reputation would look better on a job application, right? No. The problem with the students who chose the better school is that they do not realize is they will be among other students who were valedictorians and 4.0 scholars, immediately making her a little fish in this big sea. By choosing this, Caroline becomes an average student, which was a completely new concept for her. In the end, the decision she made ended up causing her to drop her intended major because it was too difficult and pick up a new one. This major was less appealing to her, and was not her passion. Now don’t you wonder what would have happened if she would have chose to be a big fish in a little pond? So does she.     --  it might not sound the way i wanted it to, but the point of the chapter was that it is best for some kids to have the opportunity to be varsity for YOU at at your school.  I would have never coached football if i had not went to my hometowns school.......Yeah, my senior year I started on an 0-10 team - but i started and played.  I never would have made varsity at another football school.  What transponded from that is me coaching football to this day.  It gave me a chance.  Wrestling, same thing.... I was the only kid on the team that didnt make the finals my senior year at sectional - I got third.  Think if I would have went to one of the schools that I lost to, I wouldn't have made varsity.  I most likely wouldnt be coaching today.   Now, I don't know what to say about the kids that leave a program, many of us have had that happen. .  They are gone, and we all have trouble forgetting that.  But what helps me is knowing what going to my high school made me, and what it makes me do today.  When kids leave, that leaves an amazing opportunity for someone else to grow as it did me.  It made me a bigger fish in a smaller pond (starter at jennings county) rather than a small fish in a big pond......example: if I would have tried to wrestle for mater dei, i may have got discouraged never making varsity, and not coach today.   I've had kids lave, that the weight class was open to a kid that was academic all state when he got it.  Great opportunity for that kid to become the big fish.   It helps me anyway to find peace with it, and know I'm doing good, and that kids get good out of being the "big fish in a small pond" here.  I was.  And other kids will get to be.   I do believe in loyalty, and staying with a school (been at Jeff 17 years now despite chances to leave); but once a kid leaves, do the best you can with what you got and create an awesome opportunity for the next kid to be "the big fish".  Don't get so mad the kid left that you neglect the next kid or we WILL FALL LIKE GYMNASTICS.  Keep your numbers up despite the transfers, its your job to.   what a rant.  I really just wanted people to know I can read.

Here's a thought that hit my brain a couple years ago and I'd like to know what other's think.
When a kid transfers school there's almost always three sides of the equation.  Parents say, "The IHSAA should let a family do what's best for the kid" and if the school a kid leaves decides to protest,  they're quick to say "that move was for an athletic transfer which is not allowed".  The school that receives the transfer says, "What am I supposed to do if a kid just showes up?"
My thought here isn't touching any of those statements.  We've all heard enough on Indianamat about this.
Here's my thought that I'd like to know what others think......
What is going to happen to wrestling in the long run as a whole if the number of state placing transfers continues?  Is wrestling going to become similar to gymnastics over time?  How are the small school/weaker programs going to keep up numbers of participants and quality of participants?  What about coaching at a smaller/weaker program?  Wouldn't it be more attractive place to coach if a potential state qualifier was in the room?
Here is gymnastics program from last year:  http://www.ihsaa.org/portals/0/Flip Book/2017-18/gym/index.html#?page=8
If we continue on the growth in number of transfers, what happens to the smaller/weaker schools?  How long before the smaller/weaker schools start to drop the sport.  Once that starts happening, I'm concerned it will happen with other schools quickly.  Are the number of forfeits from 1a schools increasing or decreasing in the past 5 years?  What happens when a school has 5 guys on a team, and no one to coach them?
I'm the Lorax.  I speak for the trees.
Are we ruining the future of Indiana wrestling with the amount of transfers?....but everyone needs a thneed, right?
If my daughter has a child that want to wrestle (of course I mean 30 yrs from now, after she gets her MBA, starts her own business, and then is allowed to date for the first time), will Indiana wrestling be a sport with 40 schools and the same 4 teams compete for a title?

Brigham is an All-state athlete in three sports: Football, Wrestling, and Pole Vaulting.  He represents the model our program will continue to strive for.  He is one of the most unassuming young men you will meet.  Humble and always looking for ways to serve.  Brigham comes from a long line of successful Kleinhenz athletes.  He did not start wrestling until his freshman year!  I believe all of the brothers wrestled and his sisters were managers for past teams.  Super family!  Angel Escobedo was the keynote speaker for the awards. Very cool!
A big night for wrestling in Columbus as Graham Rooks and Nick South shared the honor of best wrestler of the year.

The fix to filling weights is to have a good feeder program in place and hook these kids at a young age also getting the kids you have to get friends to come out.. If you look around the State i'm sure you will see the same thing i see in Delaware county. examples Yorktown not a large school but has been able to fill a team. Daleville i don't think even had a full team till now, but if you look at their elementary, middle school and even their high school now are growing. Cowan has a great feeder in place now and is growing fast. Delta is doing well with numbers. Monroe Central had small high school numbers but have the numbers now. Then look at other school with no feeder programs and they are the ones struggling. Is this a fast solution no but if your hurting in number there is no better way to get them then to start a feeder program.  It comes down to coaching staff and parents putting the work in and the kids will come. If you have a program in place but still do not have the numbers do something different. Summer trips are great. Do freestyle and greco for a lot of places i have heard they don't teach it because they are worried about it effecting folkstyle. All my kids have done freestyle and greco and it has helped a ton. Yes there is an adjustment period at the start but kids adjust fast. I see 7 and 8 year olds every year make this adjustment so it is not an excuse not to do it.  Dropping to 12 weights will only hurt the sport more because the schools that do have the weights to fill the classes now will only have 12 spots. That's 2 less spots and 2 less kids making varsity. Giving 2 kids a reason to want to quit. I just don't see any positives from this.
