Good point.  Might lose those Super cushy seats that cost $900 for a Purdue game.  We could go to a 3 mat scheme.  Do we really need 4 mats for a 16 man bracket with no wrestlebacks over a two day period.  It would improve the audience to mat  time ratio for our premier wrestlers.  This would be an improvement.  The fan could focus on on 3 mats instead if 4.

If I’m reading this right the PA rule just affects 8th grade.  Which to me then would mean some parents/kids will just take the same step in 7th grade instead.

I think it would curb the issue a lot better to have it say anytime in MS (7-8, really even 6th) when being held back was at the request of parents rather than a school decision based on being majorly behind on grade level skills (not just lack effort causing poor grades).  Also, they may consider putting a watch on any kid pulled from regular school and going with the “grey area” homeschool for a few years.  Those programs don’t always advance grades at the same time period as regular schools so could be a possible loop hole in this rule. Finally, I’m not sure if there was a thought on age consideration here but most kids without a serious cognitive issue hindering their learning ability likely shouldn’t be entering their freshman year two ages above the average freshman age.

Holding a kid back in elementary due behavioral based maturity issues and/or educational growth concerns does occur occasionally. But those are   mostly over the students future educational needs which the school likely has also noted, as well.  That a different situation to me than a parent waiting until MS to hold a child back and there is no major learning based concerns the school (again skill ability not lack of effort).

And sure you may see a few over zealous elementary parents still try to gain an athletic advantage by holding their kid back in 5th grade due to athletics, but not near to the extent we are starting to see as they go through MS.

First, this is rhetorical. No need to start rambling off names of kids we all already know are supposed to be juniors and are freshman/sophomores this year.

But, I do know this has been brought to the ISHAAs attention and they are interested in a similar policy in the future. When? Who knows!

This has been discussed in other posts. So we do know it’s happening here in the Hoosier state. How much do you think this affects some of our younger kids success locally? How much do we think this starts to affect power house states who are known for this(OH,PA)?? Do we see them start to slide?

I’d say we can say goodbye to 3x MS state champs. I also remember Y2 posting a stat a few years back about freshman making it to state above 126/132. (Slim Pickens) So it will be very interesting to see how this starts to affect the wresting landscape.

PA is not backdating this ruling just 8th graders moving forward. Any chance the IHSAA back dates and kids lose Jr/Sr years? Or includes all MS years(6th/7th/8th)?

This should get interesting across the board.

The acadmies have been steadily improving the wrestling level at the youth and higher levels. Contenders alone had ties to 10 of the 28 finalists. Two weight classes had two Contenders v Contenders.

HCs are bennefitting from having kids enter their high school programs having years of training and success under their belts. It does help that the big three schools from this year are all in areas that are serviced by academies.

Those three schools are fortunate to be in great locations with access to academies and families who can afford the extra, more serious training opportunities. To keep the athletes all together working for the same goal is the HCs job. So there is something to be said about BB, CP, EMD, CG, and all others for keeping the athletes together and creating a program that people want to be a part of. I agree with the phrase "symbiotic relationship."

I don't know if "main cog" would be the description I'd use vs. complementary cog. The academy training in the youth level likely predominates but in high school age groups there's more of a symbiosis... The other aspect is the fact due to population density, these wrestlers' families often have choices for school attendance that doesn't involve long driving distances from their homes to a school or academy... So, the high school academic programs and the high school coach have to be able to meet the needs of the student athlete to achieve all their goals...

To attribute causation to academies for these high school programs' successes likely isn't sufficient.

When choosing a community to move to if sports has an impact

    1. does your coach help you all year or is only an October-February it’s a lot tougher to be a part time wrestler and have success

    2. does it create a better training environment in season Partners, weight program coaching or coaching plans

    3. does the school have a better academics then our current community

    4. does the sport have better overall community support

I think as a parent that makes the choice easy for me.

100% goes to Jake Hockaday, didn’t allow a takedown all State Series and didn’t allow a takedown to 2x State Champ Senior .

Gunner Henry has put together two the best campaigns for a light heavy and he is not mentioned enough.  To put things in perspective. His trajectory is on par with Shawn Streck.  His only loses at State are to Orlando Cruz and John Purdy. They graduate.  He has 2 thirds as a light heavy.  He should be nationally ranked I already complained to Flo.

You're good @TeamGarcia! The thing I appreciate is that you and Brewer don't hide behind aliases on these boards and i've always appreciated your humor, especially if anyone has ever met you personally, they'd realize how much of a quiet, soft spoken chap you are! Saw Blaze at the finals working and it seemed liked he had some of the best seats in the house this weekend!

I gotta add something here … NEVER ONCE have I brag about Brownsburg. My whole issue I had with these rankings at the time was unjustified for Revin and his credentials at that point in his schedule. JS .

Revin Dickman placed 8th at Ironman on 12/10, 2nd at Carnahan on 12/17 and 2nd at Brecksville on 12/30 - in 20 days... and then battle Rioux for 4 weekends straight. He definitely grew up fast his freshman year.

Hockaday didn't place at Ironman on 12/10, 4th at Carnahan w/ losses to out of staters, sick for Brecksville, beats Goss and Sessa at team state and then rolls through the tournament with ice in his veins for the final two rounds...

First one was bang bang on reaction time. Wouldn't be mad at either call.

The second one was correct, but blown dead late. First, the escape might have been a little quick. Then on Jones lateral drop, Clark goes way out of bounds and Jones has supporting points out too. Action stops right there. The mistake is he let the action continue and Clark jumped back in and then circled behind. Then he blew them out. But ultimately the call was correct. It's not college rules.

Actually, the worst call was not giving 2 to Jones at the end, not that it mattered.
