Little Giants Claim Runner-Up Honors at NWCA Duals
Story Links ROUND-BY-ROUND RESULTS The Wabash wrestling team captured its best finish in school history at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals, placing second overall.
The Little Giants earned a spots in the championship match after scoring a 25-12 win over Concordia-Moorhead before facing five-time Duals champion Wartburg in the finals. The top-ranked Warhawks claimed their sixth straight title with a 28-12 result.

"I can't say enough about how the guys competed today," Wabash head coach Brian Anderson said. "They believed in themselves this weekend and fought hard. This was a great performance for them as a team. A National Duals runner-up finish is something the program can feel good about and build from the rest of the season. I'm very proud of everyone."

Wabash faced a Concordia-Moorhead team that had posted wins in head-to-head meetings at the Duals over the Little Giants each of the past two seasons. Wabash trailed 6-0 after two matches before winning the next seven bouts to end the Cobbers' winning streak. Michael Venezia triggered the consecutive wins by scoring a 6-3 decision at 141 pounds. Tim Locksmith, absent from the Wabash lineup the past two years due to injuries, continued his impressive return to action by taking a 3-2 victory at 149 pounds.

"I felt great being able to help the team out on the mat rather than driving the van," Locksmith said. "As important as the 'behind-the-scenes' stuff is to the team, it's so much more satisfying being able to directly contribute to the wrestling team's success."

Nick Bova scored a 3-1 overtime win at 157 pounds to put Wabash in front 9-6, providing the first lead in the match. Connor Brummett made certain the Little Giants did not relinquish the advantage, winning 4-1 in his 165-pound bout. Ethan Farmerpicked up four points with a major decision at 174 pounds before Riley Lefever added another pin to his season totals, flattening his opponent at the 3:45 mark of their 184-pound contest to lock up the win for the Little Giants. Brett Thummpicked up the final victory with a 4-2 decision at 197 pounds.

"(Scoring the match-clinching pin) wasn't nearly as exciting as the energy I felt from our team, which kept building after each match and gave me the confidence to do what I did this weekend," Lefever said. It was such a great opportunity and capitalizing on it was something I could not have done without my teammates, our coaches, and our fans."

Wabash scored three wins in the final match versus Wartburg, none bigger than the victory by sophomore and  133-pound 2015 national qualifier Devin Broukal. The second-year competitor faced last year's national champion at 149 pounds, Kenneth Martin. Broukal, filling in for Locksmith in the heavier weight class in the finals, scored a hard-fought 5-4 win to score the first team points for the Little Giants.

"I didn't want my first chance to wrestle in the National Duals to end in a loss," Broukal said. "I had nothing to lose having bumped up a weight. I wanted to leave it all out there. After the match it was pretty exciting to see the team and fans cheering. Knocking off the returning national champ was definitely a confidence boost for me. I know there's no one I can't beat this year if I stay focused."

Lefever picked up a forfeit at 184 pounds prior to a 6-3 win by Thumm at 197 pounds for the Little Giants at 197 pounds.

The runner-up finish by Wabash followed a fourth-place finish last year at Duals.

It was a dig at the tournament host! Seemed to be a few of those favorable toward a specific team! Was asked by 3 coaches about the seeding! So to say the home team wasn't aware and didn't address it is sad, along with a few other questionable seeds!

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian University department of athletics is proud to announce the expansion of the department with the addition of men's wrestling beginning with the 2016-17 season of competition, director of athletics Steve Downing announced on Thursday.

"We are proud to continue the expansion of our department," said Downing. "We have added women's soccer (1998), women's golf (2004), men's football (2007), men's and women's bowling (2010) and women's lacrosse (2015) in the past two decades and the addition of men's wrestling just makes sense. It's an emerging sport across the nation and we are looking to bring in the top quality student-athletes who will not only compete for championships, but also be strong students in the classroom."

Beginning in the fall of 2016, the Knights will compete for the NAIA national championship as an independent member.

Men's wrestling is the 24th sport within the department of athletics.

what a great day of wrestling, I really liked being able to see all the schools 3A, 2A, 1A. Both my sons really enjoyed being able to watch some of the great wrestlers across the state that we normally wouldn't see until Februarys state finals. We enjoyed the big crowd of people going crazy when Lee pinned Bam! Hopefully are team will make it back for this event in the years to come if not we will still go for all the great wrestling. Not saying it wasn't crowded but I think most of us have been to ISWA meets & conditions have much worse. Why are people hanging out in the restrooms? I never waited in line. Smell? I guess I grew up on the farm. Thank you IHSWCA for keeping this event going!

I have attended all four IHSWCA Team State Duals and in my opinion the Ft. Wayne Coliseum has been the best facility. There are a couple small tweeks that I am sure the tournament director/coordinators will make that will help tremendously with seating. I received the impression from my athletes that the coliseum felt more like a state championship tournament facility than Westfield or Ball State. When we walked into the coliseum many of our wrestlers faces instantly lit up. I have always believed that if you treat a tournament like the super bowl then it becomes the super bowl, and for our kids the facility made that more true for them than in years past. Like I said, there can be some small tweeks made to make the facility even better like moving team seats to the center facing each other rather than on the sides of the scorers table which may allow the side bleaches to extend down further opening up 3-4 more rows of seating. Or moving the team food location somewhere else as well as the tournament directors stage which would allow there to be bleachers on both ends of the mats.

I think the venue was easily the best so far.  Our kids faces lit up when they walked in also.  This event needs to stay in this facility.  The seating and viewing problems are easy fixes with a few simple steps.

    1. move the team seating and the scorers tables to the INSIDE of the mats instead of the outside of mats....this puts all teams facing the crowd.
    2. move "tournament control center" upstairs overlooking the entire venue (They do it this way at Disney) or move it to a corner and move the team food "lounge".
    3. bring in the end zone bleachers that I have seen in other pictures of the expo center.

Bathrooms and concessions - are always a problem unless we are at Bankers Life, Lucas Oil, etc etc.  The prices will still be too high or whatever and the cleanliness of the restrooms will still depend on the person who used the stall just before you needed to.  Pigs will be pigs and the venue has nothing to do with that.

Thanks to the IHSWCA for everything they are doing to make this event the best event possible.  I can PROMISE everyone that they really do care and they really do want this event to be the best event of the year.  I can also promise everyone that they will make adjustments and if it is at the same venue next year that it will be a much better fan experience.

I was in "wrestling heaven"!!!!!!! I am a mom who has become a big big fan of wrestling. Watching my older boy wrestle was just the beginning and now I am watching my freshman. He has wrestled since kindergarten and now I am enjoying not only watching him, but all the other boys he has wrestled in the past. I thought the venue in Ft Wayne was awesome. It was filled with non-stop action all day!!!! For the first time, I saw teams like Bellmont, Prairie Heights and a few others from the north all under one roof and wrestling at the same place. I just went with the flow. If my sons team moved, I moved right with them and when it was his turn to wrestle, I found a place to watch him. There was so much energy in the room how could you not be excited!!!!!! It was an unbelievable day of wrestling with some of the BEST WRESTLERS in the state. I can't wait till next year!!!!!!!

With so many loaded tournaments during the week and then ending the week with the State Duals, I have to say that this is a great week to be a wrestling fan... Outside of individual state tournament excitement this has to be the best week of wrestling in the State...

Ending 2015 with Al Smith, Mooresville, Mater Die, North Montgomery and Connersville tournaments and then starting 2016 with Team State....

    Great scheduling!!!!!

I really liked the way the North Montgomery tournament was designed.

First day was dual format with all 12 teams separated into 3 pools then wrestling into final placing pools.

Day 2 was converted into individual style tourney with seeding based on the previous day's results combined with other seeding criteria.

Pretty cool hybrid way of doing it. I suppose it's not a new thing but I've never been to one like that. Kept it really interesting over the two days.

Many great matches, ranked and unranked.

Good job to Bloomington South for the win.

Wasn't there for the entire tourney, what are some of the matches that stood out?

Thanks to all the participating teams for taking a chance on our new format. Our tournament director, parents, Pendleton Heights (allowing us to use their score clocks), and our administration, and wrestlers did a great job running the tournament. We have a couple tweeks to make which will hopefully make the tournament even better. Maybe even looking to add four more teams next year and beefing up the awards as well. Excited for next year's tourney!!

Not a complaint, rather a suggestion.  Can we add a column for "previous ranking"  It's interesting to see who the big movers are each week and this is an easy way for people who aren't familiar with EVERY wrestler in the state to be able to follow those kids that have either climbed or fallen significantly.
