KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC) won a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on the first day of the highly- respected Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix.

In the finals, Howe lost to Ahmed Gadzhimagomedov of Russia in the finals, 2-2. The Russian led 2-0, when Howe scored twice in the final minute. The Russian won the tie-breaker by having the highest value scoring move, a two-pointer.

Gadzhimagomedov has previously won gold medals at the Ramzan Kadirov Cup, the Moscow Lights and the Intercontinental Cup tournaments in Russia, as well as the Copa Brazil and the Ukrainian Memorial International.

Howe scored a 5-2 win over Boris Makoev of Russia in the semifinals. Makoev was second at the 2013 Dave Schultz Memorial in the USA

Howe was an NCAA champion and four-time All-American, competing first for Wisconsin and then for Oklahoma. He was second in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

He was attempting to become the 11th American men’s freestyle wrestler to win this event, considered one of the toughest in the world each year. The last American men’s freestyler to win was Steve Mocco, the heavyweight champion in 2009. Five U.S. women have won this event, but Team USA did not have any women entries this year.

Eliminated were the two U.S. entries at 57 kg/125 lbs., 2014 U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) and Matt McDonough (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC). Both were past NCAA champion for the Univ. of Iowa.

More updated results will be posted when available, as well as the draws for Saturday. Thanks to United World Wrestling for photos and results.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2015, Castle High School will host Evansville Memorial High School in the 3rd annual Military Appreciation Wrestling match.  In the first two years, over $2,000 has been raised.  The first year, the money was given to Wounded Warrior Project and last year given to Operation Homefront.  This year, once again, the two teams will be giving to Operation Homefront (http://www.operationhomefront.net).  Their mission is to offer relief during a crisis, a place to recover after serving, and to recognize those who have sacrificed for our country.  Please join us at 6pm for this dual.

We will also be collecting items to send in care packages for soldiers who are currently overseas.  Items that we will be collecting include:Toothpaste/toothbrushes, Chapstick, Hard/Rock Candy, Decks of Cards, Dental Floss, Wet Wipes, Drink Packets, Deodorant, Pens and Paper, Crackers, and anything else you would be willing to offer to our soldiers.

I will use the Brownsburg Avon Match as an example. We try to make it a spectacle, a highlight dual. Avon is our rival why wouldn't we do everything we can to promote it from DJs and Spotlights to goofy over the top promo videos. We had the most fans in that gym than we have since i moved down here. It was the same thing with the Penn-Mishawaka Duals when both programs were at the top. That's how you bring average fans in and they come back for other dual meets. The Dual meet is the best way to push our sport forward from a Fan Perspective.

I couldn't disagree more. Growing the sport isn't about the die hard family, friends & fans. Those people will sit thru fire to watch a good wrestling match! If we hope to grow the sport we need to look at getting the "common" fan into the stands and the young athlete into the wrestling room. As the coaches said 6-8 long Saturday's each season are a much harder sell (for the common fan and young athlete) then those die hards who have been wrestling thier hole lives. Just my opinion.....

I would have to say that tonight's hangout was one of the best so far. I totally agree with what coach Tonte and coach Pendoski had to say about Team State and dual meets.

    Team State

Tonte hit it right on the money about the atmosphere of Center Grove. The way they brought each team in as a parade was amazing. It was something that wrestlers enjoyed, and really got the crowd ready for the day. I know this would be a little more difficult with 36 teams, but trying to make the event as big as possible is what it needs. One of the best things about Center Grove besides being able to see all the matches going on was the awards presentation. Being able to walk across that platform to receive a medal was a moment that a kid will remember forever. I really hope the IHSWCA comes up with a better way for awards instead of sticking the teams in a corner and putting the Trophy on a box of shirts. This tournament is heading in the right direction and I feel it is exactly what we need. And as Joe put it, treat it like a Super Bowl and it will become a Super Bowl.

    Dual Meets

I couldn't agree more with schedules needing more dual meets instead of spending Saturdays wrestling five times. Super duals have seem to hurt fan bases of programs, cause no one wants to go sit 10 hours on a Saturday in a gym to watch wrestling. The excitement that can be built in dual meets and rivalries are fan friendly. It was nice to see that two coaches that I have followed my whole life have the same mind set on ways to keep our sport strong and growing.

To be honest it hard to believe that a conference tournament as big as the Hoosier Crossroads isn't on Trackwrestling. Very disappointing!!!

Your right oversite here. BB will definitely be in the mix this year, but with loss of Lafayette teams and some teams being down this is not the tournment it's been in past. Hopefully some other schools can be brought in and strengthen things up in all sports.
