rookie78 reacted to cbultemeier in Prayers needed for a young Bellmont wrestler
Dear wrestling fans family and community. I am Corbin Bultemeier the father of Remington who was injured in a freak incident December 4th. We want to thank everyone in the wrestling community as well as Indiana Mat for the overwhelming support for Remy during this traumatic time. It has simply been amazing what prayers have done for him during his recovery. In the post below I will post his most report from Dr's today. Thanks again and God Bless you all! If you would like to follow the journey feel free to search and friend me on Facebook. I will gladly give you the opportunity follow along as his life changes directions. God put a sharp turn in the road but it wasn't a dead end.
Well we were able to meet with Remington's neurosurgeon, Dr. Fulkerson today. He reminded Remy that he was a very lucky young man....many with such injuries end up in wheelchairs. He was extremely pleased with Remy's progress and his x-rays looked great!
Unbelievably, Dr. Fulkerson released Remy without restrictions! Yes, after expecting Remy to be out of all activities for 1 entire year, he released him before we could even ask him what the future restrictions would be and how long. That includes skiing and tubing at the lake this summer (without kamikaze actions), shooting a gun for Turkey season, shooting archery for bow fishing as well as leading his new hunting dog Cabela and 4H animals.
As you can see, we have tried to focus on the positive side of the other activities that Remy enjoys. He's been Blessed in so many ways!
The one tough discussion that Remy had today was Dr. Fulkerson explaining the risk of impact sports in Remington's future. He explained that as an individual of a sports family and a son of a former coach, he recognizes the importance of sports in a young athletes life. He said he knows it's "everything" in the first 18 yrs. but emphasized the ability to be productive for the following 80 yrs. He explained that he can't totally say no to football and wrestling but stongly feels they should be out. He feels that the risk is too great for the reward since Remy's neck has lost so much of its ability to absorb the shock in such sports.
At this point, we don't have to go back to Indy until December. At that time, we will discuss whether the rods will stay in permanently or whether Remy will need to have surgery to remove them. His neck will be healed enough at that point that they won't be necessary and removing them will depend on how Remy's body tolerates them as he increases his level of activity. In this case, Remy will have time to see how he is able to function with them on a daily basis.
Again, God and his earthly healing hand, known as Dr. Fulkerson have been amazing with Remy in this journey. Not only did they save his life but restored his mobility in just 3 months. We truly believe the unceasing prayers from all of you have helped guide the healing hands of Dr. Fulkerson as he put Remington' s broken body back together. We will be forever be indebted to all that have supported us in this endeavor. Thanks again and God Bless all of you!
I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME.
PHILIPPIANS 4:13
"It's not about what I was, It's about what I'll become."
A motto that I came up with in the event that Remy's dreams must change.

I'm ok with class wrestling once Indiana population hits 10 million people.

rookie78 reacted to nmsmelby in Class wrestling poll
I don't know why we wanna class individual state, it makes zero sense to me. We already have a great system. Class wrestling is to get exposure to smaller schools, we already have that at team state. They should have it like it use to be where teams wrestled team regionals, semi state, then team state. That's the only inprovement that needs to happen. I don't care what arguement people through at me, nothing trumps the "true champion " arguement.

I guess all I can go by is what I know...which admittedly is not much. But I do think I kind of have a bit of a unique perspective because I'm that parent going through having my kid wrestle for the first time right at this very moment. So maybe to add some color to this, here's our story and why I think it applies...and why the class we are in has nothing to do with it. I've posted something similar elsewhere, but it's a good study in program building.
We live in Brownsburg. My son is a 5th grader and just started wrestling in November. He has been a football and basketball player his whole life, and is pretty good at both. Not the best, but above average and has always made the "travel" or "AllStar" teams for both football and hoops. Despite his success and most of his buddies continuing to play basketball, he made the decision this fall to give wrestling a shot (we steadfastly refuse to let our kids do 2 sports at once so that meant giving up organized basketball for a season).
That seed to wrestle was planted a year ago last weekend. I am also a football coach, and knew quite a few of our state qualifiers and wanted to support them at state. My son is the ball boy Friday nights and the tagalong whenever he can. So we went down to BLF last year knowing next to nothing about the sport, and watched our guys finish 2nd in state. We figured out that if one dude "tackles" another dude you're supposed to yell "TWOOOO". It was awesome.
Unbeknownst to me, that seed had taken root in my kid...until finally it was a few days before his tryout for his travel basketball team this fall. "Dad, I think I want to give wrestling a shot."
"Ok buddy...but you know that means you won't be playing basketball for your Hoops team, right? And you will be wrestling really good kids that have been doing this since they were 4 years old sometimes...so you are going to get your a$$ kicked. A lot. And oh yeah, wrestling is really freaking hard for anyone, let along someone just starting in 5th grade."
"I know, but I really want to try it."
So he dove into club wrestling...something that Coach Snyder and Weisjahn put nearly as much time, effort and energy into (if not more) as they do with the high school program. They INVEST in the youth (i.e. the future) as much as the kids going to State. My son? He fell in love. The fact that the high school coaches know his name and have taken an interest in him matters a ton. While i can't predict the future, and he's had some good success despite being a beginner...he may not ever wrestle for our high school. If he does he may never wrestle varsity. And that's OK...he at least has given it a shot. And while he may never make it to BLF, if things continue as they have then I have a suspicion he's going to give it his best shot to get there. The dude LOVES to wrestle.
The so what...and why it matters to this discussion?
Had we lived a few miles east in Wayne Township, where the largest HS in the state (Ben Davis) has a pretty mediocre wrestling program (apologies to Donald Campbell, who was great)...my kid would still be on the hardwood. If we lived a few miles southwest in Monrovia? I have a sneaky suspicion that there quite a few kids just like my son that watched their own destroy the giants...and are now dreaming of one day that being them.
I realize it could be interpreted that this story supports classes because in the Monrovia example that seems to say "winning state is important". My thought is that if Eli Stock beat Matt Pennedalot from North Central Southern Eastern (Clinton) in some "small school state" in a 0:19 fall...that is not nearly as impactful as those Monrovia guys BATTLING with whomever, whenever, and wherever in sectional, regional, and semistate.
Program building is sales. Coach Snyder went and FOUND kids in the hallways to wrestle. Anthony Cicarelli (state qualifier at 170) told my son on the floor of BLF on Saturday..."buddy, coach snyder came and found me my freshman year and got me to be able to wrestle here. Just imagine what you will be able to do starting in 5th grade." He and his staff INVEST in the youth program. The results are showing. It's not because we happen to be a "big school" that is "doing well". He found kids. He and his staff developed them. They bought in. The cycle is repeating.
My son's observation as we drove home from BLF, pumped up about watching our team win it's first IHSAA team state title? "Dad, you know what's really cool about wrestling? I looked at that list of high schools with state qualifiers in the program. I've never heard of a lot of those high schools! And some of the really good football teams hardly have anyone at all! That's awesome!"
Don't mess with the single coolest event in high school sports...one that planted a seed in my kid's head and heart that led him to a sport he absolutely loves.
Now back to some statistics.

if small schools want success start a club and build from there if that's what it takes. But I feel separating by class takes away from winning a title for all classes. Maybe I'm wrong if all the top kids wrestle year round and meet in the off season they know who's best I suppose but I still say it's not as special winning a title in a class system. I believe in 1 state 1 champion per weight. I watched my brother finish runner up over the weekend to a 2A kid. If it were classed he would have obviously won. I would have rather watched him get 2nd in a single class system than to win a "1A state title". Just my thoughts on it.

Just out of curiosity, Joe do you have any attendance numbers from states that are close to our size that have class wrestling? Not that it would be a deciding factor, but I just would like to see some comparisons.

I'm for keeping single class and adding multiple class wrestling for both the team duals and individual tournaments if the schedule could allow it. I'd treat the class individual tournament like Al Smith, Evansville, and etc. as a precursor to the single class individual tournament. I believe that the current class team dual has helped our AC program maintain and hopefully strengthen. Rarely will we have enough studs to overtake Bellmont for individual sectionals, so it was harder to get more kids to come out. When the IHSWCA came about and we had multiple top 2 to 4 finishes, I personally believe it helped gain more interest. Tony would be better to answer this, so I don't want to step on his toes on that aspect. As for single class team duals, I loved listening to our rivals Bellmont and the other power programs battle for the best team. So much tradition with Perry Meridian, Bloomington South, Mishawaka, Mater Dei, and others renewing rivalries.

Or explain how Yorktown finishes 4th as a team, Prairie Heights has 40+ kids on their team, and Shenandoah has 3 State placers?
It's all about the organization within your program, the support from parents in your program, and the quality of coaching at your school. I would take 0-1 State Qualifiers a year at a small school rather than 5-6 every year in a watered down State Finals. We have one of the best State Tournaments of any sport in the State, classing it will not get more numbers in the rural, small schools, it will just water it down.

rookie78 reacted to Linn's Prodigy in Article: 2017 Fort Wayne Semi-State Preview
Personally, I would like to announce my return to the message board. I'm back. Anyways, I think a couple of the picks are slightly off. You are missing a dark horse at 170 lbs. in Jonyvan Johnson. Hardcastle while tough, I don't think will be able to handle the heat. Also, in the descriptions at 160, Nick Potter lost to Baumgartner in the ticket round in the year of 2015 not Busse but I'll forgive you Y2. Also, whoever chose a freshman Winner over the seasoned and returning medalist Riley Rasler 1) has some massive pebbles & 2) is slightly delusional or a bit visually impaired. Here are the reasons why: besides him being a returning state-placer with only on loss to the returning state runner-up, he is tough as nails and has, I believed proved it to be so. Winner is a solid freshman, but we will see how he fairs getting thrown to the semi-state wolves. Also, not much can beat experience at this level. Enough said. Also, watch out for ole boy Josh Stephenson to open some eyes and make the finals. Finally, much respect for Joel Arney, tough as nails, but I have to give a shoutout to my boy Parker Bates. The spladle is a magical thing. Don't tell anyone, but Parker is much better than his turd brother Hunter Bates. oh well. Linn's Prodigy out.

What a tournament!!!!
Two undefeateds get their first losses of the year.
Congrats to Prairie Heights who outpaced the field today. They win their first ever regional title (hard to believe).
IMO, Prairie Heights has put the FW Semi-state on notice. Everyone on this team knows their role. The difference is team score started in the first round - the tossup matches all went PH's way. The matches they dominated ended in PINS. These guys are trained to head hunt. If you make a mistake and go to your back you are not getting off of it.
Next weekend is going to be a blast!

rookie78 reacted to maligned in Team State Duals #'s (those are not hashtags)
Probably Tuesday. It takes a lot of hours the first weekend to hunt down missing grade levels and other tidbits and to cross-check all of it for correctness. But anyone can go on the procedures doc and estimate their score very quickly. 3 possible scores for underclassmen. 2 or 3 for seniors. Give yourself a bonus for full or almost full lineup and you're done. If you've got over about 140 in 1A, you're most likely already in.
