There's no Genius system...people are confusing things.
The Genius ratings have nothing to do with Team State qualification other than assigning quality levels to sectionals and regionals.
You earn your Team State spot based strictly on your individual tournament series performances. The same scoring system that suggested Cathedral would be a top 5 or top 10 team every single year it's existed is picking Cathedral to be the best team in the state next year by a good margin.
Strength of schedule does not lower or raise your Genius rating. Performing poorly against any team--whether bad or good--would lower your Genius rating. We only show the strength of schedule numbers of the sake of interest--they don't impact anything for any team in any way. They are a simple average of the quality of teams you faced. It's just the nature of things that if you face #50 in the state two times, your average "strength of schedule" will be higher than a team who faces #1 and #300. No one can argue that Cathedral faces a murderer's row all season long--but the AVERAGE opponent faced by Cathedral is lower than some others' average opponents. But Cathedral smashes those teams and that's fully incorporated into the rating. Their rating is NOT dragged down by facing those teams. And any numbers about any team's strength of schedule has ZERO IMPACT on anything related to Team State selection.

It's actually quite a bit different in wrestling because the score differential is the collection of 14 separate events that are all contested with top effort. In professional sports, where the margin between top teams and low teams is very slim comparatively speaking, it makes sense to limit point differential results because the assessment of two teams' quality difference in a 57-3 game or a 45-14 game is negligible since so much of the game was played with non-standard substitution, tactics, and effort.
In wrestling, we actually have to adjust the scores of matches between highly ranked and low-ranked teams so that the top teams aren't dragged down by "only" winning 84-0 over a team that is 100 points lower in the ratings.
It is actually a phenomenon that exists in every score-based rating of this type in any sport that certain teams are capable of crushing anyone that's a notch or two below them because of their balance even though they don't have the talent/star power to hang with teams rated right around them. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're "overrated" in terms of their rating "score" because the rating reflects their expected strength against EVERYONE--not just the teams right next to them. Win/loss based ratings will better reflect some of the slotting of what teams seem to "deserve", but will struggle to capture the true talent of teams that faced a very difficult schedule or teams that happened to lose a few close matches and are overall far less predictive of future results.
Vegas is able to set lines for specific matches that better reflect all of these tendencies because they can build additional elements into point spreads such as matchups, injuries, etc.; but again, they always use score-based ratings like Genius uses as the starting point. For your beloved Raiders, they would look at matchups and know you're actually a 60-point favorite against someone 45 points lower in the ratings but perhaps a 15-point dog against someone right near you. But those two facts balance each other out in assigning a "starting point" rating.

I was killing time watching matches on You Tube today and found Mason Parris frosh semi-final match against Chase Osborn in 2015.  I had forgotten how close, and slightly controversial that match was.  A quick recap:
Osborn controlled the match early with 3 take downs, getting in on a single leg fairly easily and finishing strongly.  Mason battled to stay in it with a mix of reversals and escapes.  About mid-way through the 2nd period Mason started to change the momentum.  Osborn got his 4th TD :30 into the 2nd period to lead 8-3.  Mason reverses to make it 8-5 at the one minute mark of the period.  The match was marred with several delays for blood time all the way down to :02 remaining.  It certainly disrupted the flow of the match. Mason let's him up to make it 9-5 and can't take him down buy fights off shots that were scoring early, ending the 2nd at 9-5.  Parris starts the 3rd period down and finally gets the escape @ 1:22, making it 9-6.  A quick low show from Mason nets a TD followed by a quick release making it 10-8 @ :59.  A standing go behind and a brief scramble and Parris ties it at 10 w/ :41 remaining.  More blood time at :32.  After blood time, MP let's Osborn up so they start neutral.  It's 11-10 w/ :32 to go.  Mason gets in a shot but Chase fends him off until Mason makes a quick move that would have resulted in a TD but he runs out of room and they go out of bounds at :19.  At this point Mason tried everything but Osborn is on skates.  Osborn backs straight off the mat and gets a stalling warning.  :08 to go.  More blood time. Same exact thing, Mason pushes, Chase backs off the mat. Parris asks for the stall call along with the crowd, doesn't get it.  Back to the middle w/ :02 left.  More blood time.  Caution on MP on the whistle.  Reset, add :02 back and Paris shoots, Osborn backpedals off the mat again.  No stall call again, to the dismay of a very loud crowd.  Final Score 11-10 Chase Osborn.
The match was a true tale of two halves.  One can 2nd guess whether Mason should have let him up when tied 10-10 at :30 left, but he had taken him down twice in less than a minute.  One can wonder if there was no blood time, how would the match have turned out.  But that's wrestling and Chase Osborn goes on to finish an undefeated season and a State Championship.  Mason wins another close match to finish 3rd and never loses a HS match again, netting 3 State Titles along the way.

I was bored on this fine Sunday, so I created a fantasy digest for a professional wrestling league. I understand that this probably wouldn't happen (at least any time soon) and it would take a near half-billion dollars to responsibly allocate resources, but with all of that aside, I just want to hear some responses on whether or not you would watch and/or invest in this league. Feel free to offer any other ideas. Just wondering what others would think about this.

American Premier League (APL) is a professional wrestling organization consisting of thirty-two teams divided equally between the National Wrestling Conference (NWC) and the American Pro Conference (APC). The APL is the newest of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is the highest professional level of Folkstyle wrestling in the world. The APL’s 17-week regular season runs from mid-October to late February, with each team wrestling 16 duals with one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the postseason begins with an individual tournament series to determine the weight class champion, which runs concurrent to the team tournament series that will conclude with the World Finals to determine the overall team champion. The APL is governed by the Universal Federation for Professional Athletes, whose focus is to ensure the safety and fairness amongst teams and wrestlers.
    Weight classes
The Universal Federation for Professional Athletes is the organization that regulates the APL. The UFPA has set 12 main weight classes that are currently open to professional competition, ranging from 118 lbs. to heavyweight, which is set at 285 lbs. A wrestler may go up or down from a weight at the start of the postseason if he has recorded at least four weigh-ins of the new weight during the regular season. On the day of a meet, a wrestler may only go up one weight from the weight class he has weighed in at. (Ex: Wrestler normally wrestles 134 lbs., but plans to wrestle 148 for dual, must weigh in at 142 or 148 to be able to wrestle that weight.) Only two wrestlers can weigh in per weight for a team.
    118 – 126 – 134 – 142 – 148 – 155 – 163 – 170 – 184 – 197 – 235 – 285
    Teams
The APL consists of 32 clubs divided into two conferences of 16 teams in each. Each conference is divided into two divisions of eight clubs in each. During the regular season, each team is allowed a maximum of 36 wrestlers on its roster;[43] only 24 of these may be active (eligible to wrestle) on dual days. Each team can also have a 10-man practice squad separate from its main roster, but the practice squad may only be composed of players who were not active for at least nine duals in any of their seasons in the league. A wrestler can only be on a practice squad for a maximum of three seasons.
    Season format
The APL season format consists of a four-week preseason, a seventeen-week regular season (each team wrestles 16 duals), and an eight-team single-elimination tournament culminating in the World Finals, the league's championship dual.
    Preseason
The APL preseason begins with an intrasquad dual meet on each team to determine what wrestler will be awarded the starting job. Since a team is only allowed a maximum of three wrestlers per weight, a round-robin will be used by each team (privately) to determine the intrasquad competitors. Once the intrasquad meets conclude, the preseason continues the next week with a team competing in an exhibition dual against another team outside of their division. The third week of preseason will then see a team compete in an exhibition dual with a team who is in their division. The APL preseason will conclude with the Who’s #1 event to determine initial weight class rankings. A tournament committee will determine seeds based upon preseason record, head-to-head competition, and credentials (e.g.: Olympic, World, or NCAA champion).
    Regular Season
The APL regular season is conducted over 17 weeks with sixteen duals and a bye week. Each team will compete in eight conference and non-conference duals, with at least four duals coming from their own division.
    Postseason
The APL postseason begins with the individual tournament series to determine the official champion for each of the 12 weights.
    Individual Tournament Series
    Divisional Championship
The divisional championship tournament is an “all-in” format. Each wrestler from all 32 teams automatically qualify for their division tournament. The tournament has an 8-man bracket with full wrestlebacks with seeding criteria based upon having at least one match toward their record, winning percentage, actual record, at least one matches toward division record and head-to-head competition. Only the top four places will move on to the conference championship.
    Conference Championship
The conference championship tournament takes the top four finishers from each of its divisions and places them in an 8-man bracket with full wrestlebacks. Wrestlers will be paired based upon finish in division tournament (e.g.: champion wrestles fourth place finisher, runner-up wrestles third place finisher). Only the top seven places will move on to the individual world finals.
    World Finals
The world championship tournament takes the top seven finishers from each conference and aligns them in a 16-man bracket with full wrestlebacks, only the top four will place. The conference champions and runners-up automatically secure the top four seeds with the champions taking #1 and #2 and runners-up garnering #3 and #4. The conference champions receive an automatic first round bye and move directly into the quarterfinals. For placement, all bronze matches will be conducted at the same time across four mats in increments of four. (e.g.: 118-142, 148-170, 184-285) For championship bouts, an introduction ceremony will take place with wrestlers being brought out along with coaches. The matches will be wrestled under a spotlight and will be followed by a post-match interview, then awards.
    Awards
    -          Third and fourth place finishers will be introduced first, followed by runner-up, and then champion
    -          Third and fourth place finishers will receive bronze medals and plaque along with team flag and coaches honored
    -          Runner-up will receive a silver medal and plaque, along with team flag and coaches honored
    -          Champion will receive a gold medal, championship belt, plaque, bouquet, and championship ring, along with team song played and coaches honored
    Team Tournament Series
    Divisional Championship
The divisional championship will be awarded to the team who holds the best record in their division. The top six teams in each division will move on to the conference championship.
    Conference Championship
The conference championship takes the top six teams from each division and places them in a 12-man bracket with the top four seeds earning a first-round bye. The tournament is single-elimination and all semi-finalists will advance to the World Finals. Champions will toggle the #1 and #2 seeds in the world tournament. Semi-final losers will wrestle for third/fourth place to help determine match pairings.
    World Finals
The APL team championship will take the top four teams from each conference and place them in an 8-man bracket with no wrestlebacks. The finals will be conducted under a spotlight with team and starting lineup introductions. The match will be followed by awards.
    Awards
    -          The runner-up team will be introduced first, championship team will follow
    -          Runners-up will receive silver medals, a runner-up trophy, a plaque, along with their flag to be raised and coaches honored.

No disrespect Fabio, but there is no chance the answer is clear if looked at objectively.  As Y2 said, it's like splitting hairs.  I personally went with Mason and here is why:
As has been mentioned football (and maybe other reasons) have limited his off-season tournaments.  But is there really any doubt in here that Mason would not have done just as well had he wrestled a full schedule?
And secondly, I think it is a different kind of impressive with what Mason was able to do as a freshman.  Look at this year's tournament.  There were 0 freshman state qualifiers above weight 152.  For Mason to go in and compete like he did at a higher weight as a frosh and finish 3rd to me is the tie breaker.  If he had :20 more he probably wins it all, but we all know about ifs and buts...  To lose 11-10 to an undefeated senior at an upper weight, but dominate everyone else as a frosh, is just something special in my eyes.
Again, we're splitting hairs because we just saw two of Indiana's best ever.  And how crazy would have been if Joe Lee stuck around and dominated 160?  He would have 3 titles, a runner up finish to a 2xer and all of the off season accolades.
I am just happy I got to sit back and enjoy watching both of them "work" and will continue doing so in the future.

piscis1956 reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: #MondayMatness: Yorktown’s McCormick has one last memorable go-round at State Finals
    By STEVE KRAH
    stvkrh905@gmail.com
When Trent McCormick became head wrestling coach at Yorktown High School, he was a teenager leading teenagers.
Over the decades, McCormick turned the Tigers into a mat powerhouse.
In his 30 seasons, Yorktown sent many wrestlers to the State Finals in Indianapolis. Fifty-nine times, they headed back to Delaware County as state placers.
Six times, they were state champions — Ross Janey (285 in 2010), Devon Jackson (138 in 2012), Rhett Hiestand (160 in 2014), Brad Laughlin (160 in 2017), Brayden Curtis (106 in 2017 and 113 in 2018). McCormick, 50, has announced his retirement and he steps away as the leader of the program with a memorable last go-round at the State Finals.
“We were a small team this year,” said McCormick Saturday, Feb. 17 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “There were a lot of studs on the team. We always like to say, ‘Steel sharpens steel.’ It’s been a long, grueling season and to have four state placers and six state qualifiers, I was very proud of them.”
McCormick, a state champion at 185 for Delta in 1986 and an Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Famer, took his boys back to the State Finals after winning the 22nd sectional, 13th regional and eighth semistate of his career.
At Indy, junior Brayden Curtis (40-0) bested New Castle junior Andrew Black 6-0 in the finals to become a two-time state champion on McCormick’s watch.
“He knows how to plan and he knows how to coach us mentally and physically,” said Curtis of McCormick. “He’s a huge part of my success as well as (assistant) coach (Kenny) O’Brien.” Senior Christian Hunt (48-1) concluded his Yorktown career as a state runner-up at 145.
“It was a great honor to go out and represent my school,” said Hunt.
“I definitely wanted to come out with a first, but second isn’t too bad.”
“As a senior, I wanted to send Coach McCormick out on a positive note,” said McCormick. “I did absolutely the best I could.”
Senior Alex Barr (48-3) placed sixth at 132.
Senior Zach Todd (42-8) came in seventh at 106.
State qualifiers were junior Eric Hiestand (42-4) at 152 and sophomore Holden Parsons (39-6) at 285.
The Tigers finished seventh in the team standings. During McCormick’s run, Yorktown has been state runner-up twice and won four team state duals championships.
A lay coach for 18 years who transitioned into teaching and has been in the classroom for the past 12, McCormick said he plans to spend more time with loved ones. He also plans to travel and that means going to West Point, N.Y., to see son Cael McCormick wrestle for Army. Cael was a three-time state medalist at Yorktown.
“I’m going to spend some more time with the family and not so much time in the gymnasium,” said McCormick.

I've been told that he doesn't plan on playing football. Now I'm sure that could always change. Regardless he weighed 218-219 most matches, I've been told his natural weight during football was 230 but all weight loss to 220 was pretty natural. In High school Parris has never cut weight. He may have in middle school but that I can't confirm. A lot will depend what the coaches want. My understanding is he was recruited to wrestle 285 for Michigan so I assume thats the plan. I'm sure he can easily come to campus around 240+ he's a hard worker so I'm sure he'll go what ever weight is best for him.
