Both Spencer Lee & Zane Retherford qualified for the 2024 Olympics to give the US men's freestyle team a full lineup in Paris. Lee went undefeated in impressive fashion to qualify. Retherford lost in the round of 16 to the Mongolian Ochir who then pulled him into repechage where Zane went 4-0 to qualify. Let's go USA!

We have yet to hear of anyone that is transferring, anyone got any big names? What about potential freshman, where are some of the top names going to attend? I've heard a couple of state placers out of Delta may be on the move to Cathedral, little Salas (hammer) going to CP, I saw CP also picked a big move in transfer out of Tennessee.

I don't disagree that returning medalist &/or team members shouldn't get such a huge advantage with byes. Just seed the tournament but then use normal brackets. Make even returning medalists earn their spot every year. But I would hate the idea of replacing an individual who earned their spot with someone else simply because the powers that be think they are better, more experienced or match up better.

Anyone else mind boggled over this one occurring. There were rumors the last few days, but it still unexpected considering a prestigious alumni like Colman Scott with a solid coaching record quite a decent head coaching job to take the heir apparent role under Smith all this season. And now he’s passed by even if it was for Taylor. I feel bad for Scott if he didn’t do anything that blatantly made the school consider rejecting him prior to Taylor’s interest. Someone in the search process at OK St. clearly was looking for the magic (pun intended) beans that may knock Penn State down a peg. It would be safe to say this pretty much signals an end to Taylor’s international career. Who does Taylor bring in as assistance that can start chipping away at Penn State’s recruiting and training dominance. Does Taylor retain at least one OK St. legacy coach to help retain current top commits? Who may he grab from the recruiting or transfer pool over Penn State? Where do the rest of OK St. staff likely end up? So many questions and answers are not coming quick enough.

It is with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye to, not only a Beech Grove legend, but a legend in the sport of wrestling throughout the entire state of Indiana. Steve Nontell passed away this morning and if you knew Steve, you know how much he loved and advocated for our great sport. I know he’s up there sporting his orange pants as we speak. Ton of rumors are starting to heat up in the FW semi-state

OK thanks. Why am I not surprised. So even though Russia is banned as a team & their athletes must compete as individuals, they still hold spots as a team.

It's always true that the draw matters. For a variety of reasons, but especially if there's an opponent who is a bad match up for your wrestler getting knocked out before you have to face them. So many times that path to the finals makes a big difference in who makes it to the gold medal match. I feel like all of our gents can potentially beat nearly every opponent in each's respective weight class. Obviously it's very unlikely they will each beat every opponent but as Maligned said, the floor is high with this sextet. No one is a gold favorite, again mentioned by Maligned, but they are all capable of gold or silver, in my opinion. Lee and Dake would be my favorites to win it all, but Parris, Retherford, Snyder and Brooks are SOOO good too. Having 6 weight classes just creates a surfeit of talent at each weight. In this case, the end result is a loaded US team. I can't wait for this to start. There is nothing like the Olympics. Hope Kayla and Sarah bring home some hardware. Pretty crazy that one out of every 4 wrestlers on the men's and women's teams is a Hoosier. Very nearly 1 out of 3 wrestlers from Indiana if Nick Lee beat Zain.

I know this is from last year, but ending off the season we (Avon) had 7-8 ranked wrestlers, not 5. 106 - Mason Goelz (5th at state) 113 - Nate Rioux (2x Runner-up) 120 - Chase Kline (not sure what he ended at but I know he was ranked at one point during season) 126 - Luke Rioux (Champ) 132 - Quinten Shoeff (Qualified) 138 - Seth Syra 144 - Jaxon Davis (never got ranked but he consistently beat top 20s and few top 10s) 285 - Joseph (Oluwebenga) Orisadare (ranked top 20 but dethroned brownsburgs #5 in semi finals at sectionals) We also beat HSE for #4 placement in state. And went 18-1 up until team state, where we had some miss weight and it was just a terrible day for wrestling for Avon. But overall we definitely earned our placement.

Purdue's best shot to not be a mid to bottom tier Big Ten team is to make a hire like Oklahoma State did with David Taylor. Now Purdue isn't OK State, and has nowhere near the resources for wrestling, but they can still go hire an unproven young guy that has had collegiate and international success. I wish Purdue would go after someone like James Green and give him the keys and let him bring in his proven guys.

Here are the Team State Leaderboards through Sectional. I wrote in another thread. Two of us that do a lot of this are traveling and we're behind. About half of these scores have only been tallied by one person and have not been cross-checked for correctness. We will be much more "official" after regional. Also, these enrollment numbers are Department of Education numbers. They will remain unofficial until state finals weekend. If the IHSAA does its biannual enrollment/classification release by the state finals, we will use that data instead. If not, these numbers will stand because we are at the end of the 2-year cycle, and we want to use up-to-date data. Remember, in 1A these scores already matter very significantly because it's much tougher to score from here on out in that class. In 2A, scores mean something now, but teams with many kids left can still make big jumps. Scores after sectional for 4A and 3A mean virtually nothing. You need most of your team to semi-state to get one of the automatic 8 spots in 3A, and you need most of your team to the ticket round and state for one of the 6 auto bids in 4A. Congratulations to the NWCA Head Coach of the Year and Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year for boys Wrestling! Head Coach of the Year: Cody LeCount of Delta High School. Coach LeCount led the Eagles to an outstanding dual meet season, a dominant Hoosier Heritage Conference championship, a State Dual Meet championship and a 10th place finish at the IHSAA State Championships in Evansville. The Eagles has three place winners for the former Perry Meridian state champion. Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year: Brownsburg High School. Kyles Ayersman, Brian Smiley, Alex Skipper, Brandon Gay, Chris Doty, Drew Krietzer, Eric Lynn and Rick Tompson. The Bulldogs captured the IHSAA state title after a 13-1 dual meet season, a runner-up finish in the IHSWCA Dual Meet Championships, Conference, Sectional, Regional and Semi-State team titles and a national ranking of 18th. The program has produced at least one state champion for the last 10 years. Congratulations to Coach LeCount and the Brownsburg assistant coaching staff. I assume someone remembers hearing about this at the time: Cael Sanderson had very few of the matches of his 159-0 career where he didn't earn bonus points--and most were TFs or Falls. In his 40-match junior year in 2000-01, only 2 opponents held him to regular 3-team-point decisions--the legendary wrestler and fighter Daniel Cormier...and Penn true freshman and Lowell HS grad Marcus Schontube. In their match, Schontube took him down in the first period and got some decent riding time. He actually led 4-2 in the second period before the match went the direction of many Sanderson matches: with a lot of takedowns and opponent escapes. But because Schontube had built a little lead and shortened the match, he got away with only a 16-10 loss. A slightly annoyed Sanderson commented later about how the kid was "a funky dude" who scored "some goofy points." Ha! Interestingly, in Sanderson's freshman year, when he was still mortal and had seven regular decisions, he only beat Evansville Central grad James Brimm, 5-0. Also of note, the same year as the Schontube match, Sanderson owned a win over FW Dwenger grad Anton Talamantes. Talamantes, too, competed much better than the average Sanderson opponent by that time in his career, and "only" lost by major decision.

Seems like a D1-Big Ten scenario for a lot of one or two-time state champs who get scholarships, but seldom or never see the starting lineup.
