A lot of the Tylin Thrine takes feel like forced hate. He’s a literal nationally-ranked state champion, and all season I’ve seen posters act as if he doesn’t stand a chance towards Hockaday or even Isaiah Schaefer when there was some talk as if he would go 126. Yet, a lot of those same posters were ready to crown Nick Lee ten years ago before he even had a title over Micic and then were totally confident he’d beat Red in HS after he won a title. Y’all had that amount of confidence for Lee either time, yet Tylin, a PROVEN state champion and upset specialist, somehow isn’t in the same ballpark as Hockaday? Now, if the match already happened or if the eventual result significantly favors Hockaday, that’s one thing, but to act like he has no shot before the match even happens despite his credibility is crazy.

I will say I have only watched Thrine wrestle at State and he looked amazing and like wrestling just makes sense to him. I am not sure how much off-season work or youth experience he has. But… I hate to tell some people that once in a while there are wrestlers that just get it and he looks to be that type of wrestler. I wouldn’t bet against him no matter who he wrestles. Especially in the big moments.

Who’s got some sleepers that are starting to make some noise and primed for some upsets this week and weeks to follow ?

who’s flying under the radar for a finals run or high placement ?

any predictions of upsets this week?

I was shocked by the wrestler from John Glenn HS almost stunning Demarco at the 132! No slander to Demarco he’s a TOUGH wrestler. I just had never heard of the John Glenn wrestler.

Are you talking about Walter Drews?

I know we do, but why do we place the "new" wrestler on the 6th seed line?

Because hypothetically they would need to figure out who the 7th seed would have been and that is not done in the seeding meeting. So we would need to seed the 7th in someway and they are the alternate. Which I think should be easy enough.

would be nice if they would separate the qualifier and the kids tournament.

I will volunteer to host it at Homestead if the dates are open here. Since it is a Sunday that should work. Our construction will be close to being fully completed next year and our facilities will work great.

  6. Here is a list of teams I am thoroughly impressed with this year and their performance and for the most part year and year out. There are others but off-hand these are the ones I know their coaches and what they have done to build their programs and the effort they have put in. In no way am I taking from the other teams. But what I am saying is these teams and coaches deserve huge kudos and not just talking about the depth of blah blah blah. And how they would own 1A. That's pure insulting and frankly shows some real ignorance.

    Adams Central - 370 enrollment

    Rochester - 505 enrollment

    Bellmont - 641 enrollment

    Garrett - 604 enrollment

    Columbus East - 1534 enrollment

    Jay County - 1003 enrollment

I know Columbus East is a little bigger but man I see them everywhere competing as a team. One year their wrestler might not be much and the next year you have a problem on your hands. Huge hats off to Coach Cooper.

    Define home grown

The same last names coming through that program for a couple of decades or longer.  And I don't think I need to define homegrown. Most people understand what it takes to compete at a very high level like some of these programs. What I am saying is some of these other programs are doing great things also with fewer resources.

Can we just change this to Joe and mike talk Bburg geez

Ha! Now you know how the rest of us feel with the CP and Bburg talk all the time. Most of us don't care how deep and great they are. We just want to hear about wrestling across the State. Just really hope neither team puts a 1A team together that wins 1A State. 😬

I apologize, it was not my intent to suggest they diagnose. I’m not suggesting anyone do anything, I am just asking what the protocol is. I’m just trying to understand how it works currently.
When a wrestler asks for a time out, do they have to say what the injury is? Can a ref ask what their injury is?

Again, I’m trying to come at this as a learner and understand what I’m seeing on the mat, not offer a solution.

Don't take any offense Kyle. Anytime you post something on here you will get positive and negative feedback. Scholar and I agree on many things. Not on this which is okay. In my opinion, something needs to change. It's getting out of hand. Maybe the coaches can wrestle to decide what happens. For every 2 years over 40, we get spotted a point. First one to 4 wins.

I'm sure we have seen a few cases of that being used similar to the inhaler situation mentioned previously.  But, policing those situations is hard and I'm not sure the refs want that judgment on their hands as Y2 mentioned earlier.

I would agree with that. I have a wrestler that usually needs the can in the first 30 seconds of his first match of the day. Nothing he can really do about it.

I just want to clarify what is being proposed here...

If a wrestler asks the ref to stop or pause the match for the 1st injury time, then choice of position is given to the opponent.  But if a wrestler is trying to keep going and the ref notices a possible injury so the match is stopped to check on the wrestler and that results in the 1st injury time, then no choice of position is given.  The difference is who initiates the injury time to be taken - the wrestler or the ref.

I can agree with it used like this.  But I don't agree with automatically giving choice on the first injury time for high school kids.

Yes. For example, if a potentially dangerous call is made while something is being tweaked and the wrestler needs time to recover then no choice of position is given. But if the wrestler calls for the time-out without any clear issue being presented then the choice goes to the opponent. The question then comes in what if the wrestler is throwing up or thinking they are going to throw up?

At our conference meet I coached in multiple matches where the opposing wrestling called for injury.  Then got up, walked over to his coach and drank some water, talked for about 30 seconds and then walked back to the circle and said he was ready!  No inhaler, no trainer, no blood, no rubbing a shoulder or any body part.

Yep. This is the stuff I am seeing frequently.

That would be a big lawsuit waiting to happen. No referee should be put into a situation to determine if a kid is hurt or not.

The simplest solution is do what college does and give the opponent choice of position. It's not a penalty, but gives the opponent an advantage.

Sorry I considered giving the opponent choice a penalty. I wasn’t necessarily thinking points. I was thinking an automatic stall or the opponent choice.

  14. I have coached a long time and I feel I am starting to see more and more wrestlers call their own injury time. Many times it is because they are gassed and need a break. Something needs to change with this. One of the goals of the sport is to break your opponent. I find anymore as soon as you break your opponent their knee or shoulder magically hurts. Something needs to change. Coaches need to also step up and not let their athlete pull this stuff. It’s hurts the sport. I know college lets the other wrestler have choice after this happens.

As someone who earned a college scholarship for wrestling, I often get wide eyed hearing parents that are actively seeking a college scholarship through wrestling, as most are not a high percentage of total costs, and many wrestlers who earn them don't complete all 4/5 years of the scholarship. So many wrestlers that are pushed to get a scholarship quit wrestling once they don't live in the same house as the people pushing them to get the scholarship. I'm sure this is a bit extreme, but 18 wrestlers joined my college team alongside me, and only 2 were on the roster the last semester of the scholarship/eligibility window.

Sounds right. The hard work learned from wrestling is what makes many wrestlers even capable of graduating college. I know it did for me. So in a way the "scholarly"ship has already happened and is sailing. Nothing wrong with a solid community college or trades school either to keep those silly student loans from haunting you forever.
