Coach Peck reacted to TightCradle in What Leasons Are Being Taught Off The Mat
I actually feel like a lot of good things are happening off the mat.
This weekend was high emotion, and that breeds tension.
I saw kids that were finished staying to watch placement matches. Many of these kids weren’t from the same school, club, region or semi-state. I saw kids that don’t know each other talk and interact and support each other. I saw parents hug their kids and tell them how proud they were. I saw coaches tell a kid how much they’ve grown.
I would argue there is more of that than the opposite. Bad things get a lot of attention, but I think we should focus on all of the good stuff instead.
The future is bright in Indiana for wrestling. This tournament seems to get tougher every year, and that’s awesome.

#1 calling out individual kids is something that you need to refrain from or else there will be a forced vacation from posting.
#2 ask Coach Peck said, it comes up every year.
The solution is hairy as you cannot penalize a kid for being hurt with points. The way NCAA does it with choice of position for the injury time is the best way to do it in my gracious opinion. While this isn't a punishment via points it gives the other wrestler an advantage that they must make use of.

Every year for the last fifty (that is about my length of recollection) people always gripe about misuse of injury time. I think that sometimes injury time is abused, but there is nothing to be done about that except maybe scoring one point any time an injury time is taken when the Official determines a score is imminent. Other than that I fear we begin to penalize a kid who is injured and that should not happen. I thinik most coaches, if they wil admit it, have had a kid who faked it to get a rest. I remember once back in the early eighties when my guy was wretling in the Regional and in the middle of a flurry he began to scream. The Official stopped the action, and I quickly moved to him. I told him to lie still and asked him where he was injured,. He looked up and said, "I'm not injured coach I just need a break." I wanted to kill him, ir was embarassing eventhough no one knew. I told him to lay there until I helped him up. I got him up and had him walk around, and then he went back to wrestling. The "break" did not help as he got beat fairly soundly. THe next week at praxctice I made him run each day. He asked why and I told him it he needed a break during the match he must not be in shape. There may have been others, but nearly as blatant.

Angel and Lance Ellis.....my picks. Neither of them would strike you as dominating by looking at them, but they were so smooth, and had great internal wiring. Simply amazing.

I'm not hating at all. He did great! I'm just saying Waylon Cressell is a beast with a boatload of confidence haha. I think everyone shared the same level of shock/also not shocked feeling when Leavell pinned Shep.

I do not think he has been mentioned but a great wrestler and (in my opinion) one of the best coaches in taking a wrestler to a higher level quickly was/is James Tanniehill. Multiple time National Champion as a wrestler and coached many champions.

Really showing my age, but watching Muncie Central’s great Pete Lee (state champion and future Olympian) wrestle live in high school helped flame an early spark of interest in wrestling. I remember sitting a few feet from him on the bleachers at sectionals at Muncie Southside and just being in complete awe.

Harold Grundy from Indianapolis Arlington. Coached several years and although he doesn’t have a lot of accolades, he certainly helped save several at risk teens from prison or worse (including me). He would always say, “It’s deeper than wrestling.”

Coach Maurice Swain does a phenomenal job and I think is one of the best coaches in the state. I was fortunate to start my coaching career with him and I learned a lot in that time.
