  1. Probably an combination of things: Better overall competition, no travel restrictions, more notoriety overall as a state, Illinois has had great success at Fargo as well as cadet and Jr national duals, there are some really great coaches in the Chicago land area, etc.
  2. The extra point for near fall does encourage wrestlers to get better on bottom, there is much more risk created with the threat of giving up 4 than probably only 2.
  3. College out of bounds stall calls leave too much up to interpretation, see Garrett v Clark. 4 pt near fall makes kids want to be good on top, much more interesting. I would like to see the 3 pt takedown
  4. If the ref sees blood at any time by rule it switches to blood time, not sure why he gave "his time" but it sounds like the right call was made
  5. Columbus east 5 - all return next year as well Frontier 1 their first ever qualifier Kankakee Valley - 2
  6. Didn't Harper lose to Porras from Hobart his senior year? Kyle Ayersman was a 4xer as was with Streck
  7. Frontier picked up their first regional champ in program history
  8. Clay Jones Lafayette Jeff Indianapolis 157
  9. Columbus East advances all 14
  10. Wright 3-2 over Anderson Johnson over McCartney
  11. I don't think Black weighed in today
  12. I talked with a few high level state officials and they said that there was really no way an official could keep middle school teams from wrestling in fight shorts. many parts of the rule book aren't followed in middle school meets, time, weight classes, etc. Any middle school official who would try to stop wrestling because of fight shorts/shirt combo isn't worth hiring and doesn't have the best interest of the sport in mind.
  13. Great coach, even better person.
  14. AD's love state titles as well, this is a huge boost to their professional resume. Seems like a case of self-promotion taking the front seat here.
  15. Once you start high school you only have the next 8 consecutive semesters to compete. He will only have one year of eligibility left, this has been tried before by kids in other sports. I can't think of a time they were granted the extra year without it being a serious medical issue.
  16. It all starts with building numbers at the lower levels. What type of club program do you have in place for kids at the elementary level, do you run elementary camps or an entire club program? What involvement do you have with the middle school development? Do you have coaches in the building? What is your relationship with the football coach, this can be huge in working as a team to get kids out for your program.
  17. McCutcheon, another former HCC school, has had a runner up but never a champ.
  18. The problem with stalling is that everyone wants it called, against the person they are rooting against. Stalling is generally a no win situation for the ref as he is the bad guy anytime he calls it or doesn't call it. I think a push out rule has more to do with getting kids wrestling as opposed to extending the wrestling surface. Now that I hit a nerve with a lot of people lets just ask the question: Push out rule like international wrestling or move to college rules and extend the out of bounds? What is everyone in favor of? The biggest problem I see with a push out rule is when a wrestler stands up from bottom, there could be some issues in that situation.
  19. Harrison (WL) has probably had the most team success without ever having a finalist. Columbus East has been churning out place winners recently and still has no champ, there are several kids currently in their room that could change this over the next few years.
  20. This could be a big money maker for the ISWA, and increase membership. Run the start of the event the day after sectionals or regionals at four sites, anyone who was entered into a sectional is Ineligilible. Have the sites coordinated by semi-state, you have to attend a school in that semi-state to attend that event. Bring the top 4-6 from each site to the finals the next Sunday, that might conflict because of ms state but I am sure something could be worked out. Lots of kids would want to participate in this so they would buy USA cards and probably attend a few events after this. JV kids would stick around to practice more in order to participate. This could be a win for the state as a whole and the ISWA in terms of membership.
  21. If you want to be a world level athlete you should probably play multiple sports throughout your life. This has been a big topic, most of our world team has spoke on their experiences playing other sports. The focus generally changes the older you get, I imagine most of our state champs played a variety of different sports growing up. It isn't hard to imagine why a 110-130lb kid doesn't play football, especially at larger schools, and struggles playing other sports in high school.
  22. Again, if not perfectly fair for everyone we shouldn't do anything to make things more equitable for anyone?
  23. The area erupts all weekend, when four mats are going. Your argument says that Caden Rooks is a lesser opponent because he didn't make it to state, even though he beat Cavanah(sp) and would have qualified in a two class system. In a class system we would have much fewer Triana v Cummings, Rooks v Garcia, match ups in the round to go. So a few "lesser kids" get to state, but others don't get screwed by horrible match ups in the ticket rounds.
