  1. 32 sectionals (same size as current)- Take only the top 2. Wrestle for True 2nd if 3rd placer hasn't faced the Runner-up. This gets you down to 64 (4 semi-states of 16 each)- Take the top 4 with a full wrestleback. Would need to wrestle the first round on Friday evening to avoid 5 match rule. State with 16, same as semi-state except place 8.
  2. I agree. He's done a ton for Region wrestling. He's coached a couple individual state champions. He started the Lake County Tournament. The Traicoff at Calumet has been a huge success. I've always been a fan of his passion for the history of Region wrestling. He has honored past Region state champs at the first Lake County Tournament, he honored Coach Richard Jay after his passing, and he honored Harry Colias after his passing. No doubt that Jim Wadkins is a standup dude. I don't think anyone believes that the removal of the sectional and regional from Calumet is, in any way, an indictment of him or his character.
  3. Calumet is not the only inner-city sectional in the state (or the Region for that matter) that has to deal with scratches and changes the morning of the tournament. Everyone else uses TrackWrestling without a problem. Calumet, for whatever reason, chooses to use paper bout cards instead. A few years ago, Calumet changed their name to "Calumet New Tech High School". They implemented one-to-one student laptops and an alternative learning and teaching style which was technology based. That, my friends, is called irony. To say the Calumet crew has experience which is "unmatched" is also a stretch. Merrillville ran a semi-state (4x larger than a regional) for 30+ years like clockwork. It would still be there if not for a disgruntled fire marshal. Lake Central runs a great event every December at their place called the Harvest Classic. There are other schools in the Region that know how to run a tournament and use the most current technology (TrackWrestling) to do so. Also, from a fan's perspective, I agree the extra elbow room is nice at Calumet. However, from most seats you can only see one side of the scoreboard, and at most, two sides. This can make it difficult for fans trying to follow scoring on 3 mats. There are also sight line issues where the mat closest to you is partially blocked when you're sitting in the upper bleachers. In addition, parking at Calumet is also a nightmare.
  4. On the other side of the spectrum, there is one 1st round matchup between wrestlers with losing records. Bloomington South Regional 132 lbs. Ethan Hensley (Bloomington South) 9-10 vs. Mitch Kaiser (Jasper) 11-12 The most combined losses in a 1st round matchup is 37. Peru Regional 195 lbs. Braxton Erb (Western) 16-24 vs. Justin Samons (Wabash) 23-13 Who will be the Cinderella story and have the most losses and advance to semi-state?
  5. I do know that Calumet was the last of the 4 Northwest Indiana sectionals to be finished on Saturday. LaPorte was done at 2:15pm. Crown Point was done at 3:15pm. East Chicago was done at 3:45pm. Calumet was done at 4:45pm. Calumet was also the only Region sectional to not use TrackWrestling at the scorers tables at matside. They were using paper bout cards and running the results to a central computer who was entering them into TrackWrestling. It seems most everyone else in the state uses TrackWrestling to score the bouts live at the tables. These two factors could have something to do with it.
  6. You tell 'em Streck! Hey SportsfanGMS, tell him what you said about college kids posting on a wrestling message board while away at school in the thread titled "discussion board topics 17 years ago this week"
  7. What does being in college have to do with not being the same person? Plenty of this board's members are in college.
  8. Vito, did you just like your own post (as sportsfangms) that Vito's head is going to get bigger? Having a conversation with yourself is one thing, but liking your alter ego's posts is a new level. sportsfangms = vito pepperelli
  9. Also true, which brings me to my 3rd ethical dilemma in the tournament series: When coaches from the Eastern time zone regionals send the semi-state formula to the Central time zone regionals that are still competing. I've seen a kid injury default, knowing that his draw would be better at the semi-state because his coach had the formula already. I believe last year the IHSAA prevented this from happening by holding the draws until the next day.
  10. 2 entries per weight per team. The maximum bracket size would be the number of schools in the Sectional times 2.
  11. Maybe so, but explain that to the 17 or 18 year old kid who has to watch the other guy walk in the parade at Bankers Life, and get the notoriety of being a State Qualifier from his classmates and school, and get an extra weekend of visibility in front of college coaches who may be there watching the State Finals.
  12. This isn't the only place where ethical dilemmas can arise based on the current construction of our tournament. Here's another I've witnessed: Top 3 kids in the Regional are all in the same Sectional. #1 is State Champion caliber #2 and #3 are fringe State Qualifier caliber. Nobody else in the Sectional or the other feeder Sectional are anywhere near the level of these 3. They are seeded 1, 2, 3 at Sectional A. #2 beats #3 in overtime in the semifinals and #1 beats #2 soundly in the finals. #3 and his coach now have an ethical dilemma. Do they finish 3rd and end up on the same side of the bracket as their sectional champion the following week at the Regional (and likely another 3rd place finish)? Or do they injury default and take 4th, thereby placing them back on the same side as the #2 that they lost to in overtime, giving them another chance to win that match and make the regional finals, and in the process ending the season of the Sectional Champion from the other feeder sectional? The names have been changed to protect the innocent, but this situation is another common one.
  13. This is why every year there are stories of kids who are clearly 2nd best in a sectional injury defaulting in the semifinals to "correct" the mistake in seeding at the other feeder sectional. They would then finish 3rd instead of 2nd because the 2 best guys at the other sectional were not separated like they should have been.
  14. Why not let teams enter multiple kids at the sectional per weight class, say 2 per weight? Or do something like Southern Scuffle where they allow a team and a half (21 kids total per school in this case). NAIA allows multiple kids from the same school to compete at the same weight. For team scoring, you could score just the top point earner to make things even. This would eliminate the "JV" stigma and allow more kids to get the opportunity to compete, while filling out sectional brackets that are full of forfeits. It would be much like how cross country or track has multiple entrants from the same school in the same event. I believe this would create a win-win situation for programs of all sizes. The "HAVES" with full JV squads would be able to keep those guys interested and working toward the goal of winning sectionals. It also helps the "HAVE NOTS". Imagine a team with 4 kids (a 106, a 113, and two 220's). Currently, the two 220's need to have a wrestle-off, and the loser has to make a decision to either quit the team or give up 65 pounds at the sectional. Under this new system, they both can wrestle 220. Nobody has to be out-sized and nobody has to worry about quitting because they didn't win a wrestle-off.
  15. Believe it or not, there's a lot of good wrestlers being produced in the Region that don't attend RWA. A pair of 2x State Champions and a 2x Runner-Up last year were not RWA kids (Covaciu, Streck, and Bam Lawrence). The Chesterton crew also primarily does their own thing and only supplements with RWA. Rumph, the Morans, and DeLaPena are not RWA kids. A lot of good coaches and good wrestlers being developed in the Region outside of Calumet Township.
  16. I've never understood the "More Weeknight Duals to Increase Participation Numbers" argument. If it's about limiting matches and injury prevention, I totally understand that argument and support it 100%. From a participation standpoint, however, the weeknight dual is not a brand new concept that will suddenly make wrestling more popular and save the sport. I'd bet that nearly every single school that sponsors wrestling in this state already has at least one weeknight dual at home on the schedule. I've traveled the state watching wrestling over the years and can tell you that the packed gym of community members and peers that is so often described to watch a wrestling match is the EXCEPTION, not the rule. There are a few top notch programs in this state that can pack a gym when they wrestle another top notch program. There are even some smaller schools that do a nice job of promoting their matches and getting people to come out and support (i.e. Bellmont and Prairie Heights). However, most duals around the state are attended only by the parents of the athletes competing. I was at a dual last year that began at 6:00pm and was over by 6:09pm. There were 3 matches (all first period pins, 7 forfeits, and 4 double forfeits). You mean to tell me, that if we have more of those, that will raise participation at that school?
  17. Please don't confuse "regionality" with Region Royalty. Region Royalty has no interest or comment on this matter.

  21. Maybe instead of poking fun at these excuses on a public forum, coaches could make wrestling more fun for the kids, while still working hard and improving. As an outsider not associated with any team, it's very easy to see which teams and coaches are having fun, and which ones are not. Maybe its on the coaches to figure out creative ways to keep the fringe kids involved and having a good time, instead of just saying "kids these days don't want to work hard."
