  1. He won again today vs Wisconsin, plus Chad upset top-20 Frank Cousins...and to top it off, Luke teched his opponent. One heck of a day for the surging Welch clan. Just wish they were making Duane Goldman look good.
  2. Some hearty congratulations are due to this Castle stud for pulling off what has to be the biggest upset of the D1 season. The Boilermaker has been turning it on lately, but his 5-4 TB win over #2 James Green was nothing less than spectacular, and has to be the best win by a Purdue or IU wrestler in recent memory. Great job, and I hope this is a springboard to a strong finish to his season.
  3. Great job, gents. I dropped the ball on this and you guys picpicked it up and are doing really well. It's a lot of effort, I know
  4. Yes, I will get the NC rankings started up this week. Apologies for the late start.
  5. Red is unreal...he's starting to assert himself as one of the very best in the country. His list of high level wins just in the past half year or so is insane.
  6. I really hope everyone realizes what an amazing service this is. No other free website anywhere has anything remotely like this. To say this is a massive undertaking is an understatement. To echo the previous poster, it simply wont be a fully functional process unless every team participates after every meet. If they do, we will have, hands down (and it's not even close), the best state wrestling site in the country. 15 years ago, I wouldve never thought this was possible. Unreal
  7. I have to say, that is one of the most loaded Indiana teams at an out of Indiana event in a while
  8. I was definitely wrong about MN and IL. i wasn't too impressed with MN's middle weights on the first day, but they came ready to roll on day 2. Plus McKee pinned the double Fargo finalist, which really put IL in a deep hole. MN was tremendous on day 2 and they deserved the title. They said they will be back next year, which I hope is true. Great, entertaining tourney, for sure.
  9. While Lee was amazing, he was not the MOW. Hall wasn't scored on (no offensive points), and pinned every opponent in the first period, except for his two dominating tech falls. He is absolutely unreal. He made DeMoss, who was undefeated heading into their match, look very ordinary. He was co-MOW on the basis of sheer domination. Chad Red had 4 first period falls, beat several state champs, beat 2 Fargo champs (including a Fargo double-finalist), a multiple-time Ohio state placer (first period fall), and wrestled about as well as I have ever personally seen him wrestle. Hughes beat a tough IL state champ and a FLO champ by fall. The Flo champ, Moore of St. Paris Graham, is nationally ranked. Hughes was absolutely dominant, winning all his matches by clear superiority. As with Red, I don't know if Hughes can wrestle much better than this. Austin Myers completed his third year here undefeated, with past wins over Gelen and Tolley. He defeated MN state champ Cumberbatch this year. Neal Richards completed his second straight year of being undefeated. Bobby Steveson went undefeated, including wins over nationally ranked Wisman of VA, tough OH wrestler Patchin and Rypel. Although John Cook asked my opinion, it was his decision, ultimately, and I think he chose well. Every year, there are numerous worthy candidates, and this year it was especially true.
  10. I counted 13 nationally ranked wrestlers participating today. Konrath beat a nationally ranked kid from MN. Red beat nationally ranked McKee from MN. Drew Hughes beat an IL state champ. IL should take care of MN without too much trouble.
  11. Hard to have a better summer than he has had. extremely impressive performances
  12. Forest Glogouski lost his first match and came all the way back through the consolations to finish 8th. very, very impressive. Tristan Tonte also came back from a relatively early loss to place fifth in the freshman bracket.
  13. Fantastic work by Kayla. I can't wait to see what she does next. She is a great representative of Indiana wrestling
  14. it's still a quality event, but Sr Nationals used to be absolutely brutal. It wasn't that long ago at all. Rypel is a finalist in the soph division and that is quite a feather in his cap.
  15. You're right, Matt...this used to be a big, big event. I think they might've overdone it by adding the additional grade-level competitions. Going through those brackets, I was really struck by the low numbers and often underwhelming competition. This event used to be a murderers row at nearly every weight class. Also, Kain Rust is in this event.
  16. haha, ok hang on to the sour grapes comment and ignore a lot of factual comments. To compare Perry's style with Tsirtsis' is absolutely laughable. You brought up Tsirtsis in response to my opinion of Perry and now you're passively-aggressively claiming you weren't comparing them. I'm sort of unable to take you seriously. The more I read your responses, the more convinced I am that you just don't follow the sport too closely and that's fine. You're entitled to your opinions, even when they seem to contradict each other. I have fully acknowledged Perry's accomplishments, so, again, I think you're confusing your passion for Perry for my critique of his style...and not his accomplishments. Lastly, wrestlers like Burroughs, Dake, Taylor and Ruth have obtained massive amounts of mainstream coverage...so your final comments really show a lack of awareness of the sport. No big deal, but you're kind of all over the place and not really making a lot of cogent points.
  17. Perry has always wrestled in this fashion, and, just because a match goes to OT doesn't mean a wrestler isn't attacking. Perry, however, has two titles to his credit, and yet he's done it primarily by being able to hold down his opponents, generally without any backpoints or threats to turn his opponent. His style is the epitome of 'boring' wrestling. Again, credit is due for all of his success, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not exciting wrestling. I don't blame him for taking advantage of the rules, but a style like that is never going to attract new fans and viewers. There are others who wrestle in this way, but Perry is the worst offender, IMO. I get it, you like seeing a guy ride his opponent without turning him, for very long periods of time. I just don't happen to care for his style and there are plenty of other wrestling fans who agree.
  18. I think this might be a case of misunderstood intentions. I don't think meluv was taking shots at Northwestern's, or Findlay's for that matter, wrestling room, but his point is fair. Northwestern hasn't had decades of success, nor the ingrained wrestling culture that an Iowa or Oklahoma State program has. It's reasonable to assume that their room isn't loaded to the gills with outstanding partners like Iowa or Oklahoma State. That doesn't mean there aren't some excellent wrestlers to drill with, but at Iowa you have so many former elite level wrestlers that populate the wrestling room, in addition to in-state and out-of-state walk-ons....it's an embarrassment of riches regarding 'steel to sharpen steel'. Of course, being at Iowa doesn't guarantee you will be an NCAA champ, just as being at Northwestern doesn't mean you can't win a title, but the point is legitimate.
  19. Tsirtsis was amazing. He beat 4 2014 All-Americans, including the #1 seed, a national champ last year and, obviously, the eventual runner-up. His one non-AA opponent was tough senior Busler. Although he won several matches in OT, he consistently attacked in neutral during all his matches. I don't disagree that Perry was better than Howe when it mattered most. I just don't care for his style, even as effective as it is.
  20. unfortunately, I've seen a lot more Perry matches than I would have liked. I'm curious whether you have, because he frequently wrestles exactly the way he wrestled against Howe. Check out his matches on the road to his NCAA title last year.Nothing on his feet against better competition, backs up, backs up, out of bounds. Rides pretty much everyone for as long as he wants, seldom turns decent wrestlers, wins in OT via the rideout. It's highly effective, and extremely conservative and boring. No one said it's poor strategy, and he's not the only good wrestler who does it, but it's not the most enjoyable watching. Huge difference between aesthetically pleasing and effective, so I get why he does it, but there are plenty of 'experts' who cover wrestling for a living who feel the same about Perry. I would invite you to try to convince a new wrestling viewer that Perry's style is exciting.
  21. I had deja vu watching Howe's match. It was Jarrod King all over again. Howe moved forward, forcing the action, Perry backed up, backed up, backed up, stepped out of bounds. Reset. Rinse and repeat, then take one or two well-timed shots when Howe is expecting the same old retreat. Also like the King match, Howe's mat wrestling just wasn't up to snuff. Granted, Perry is one of the most dominating top-men I've seen at that weight, but Howe knew he wasn't going to win in on the mat. This may be just sour grapes, but Perry's style is absolutely dreadful to watch. Effective? yes. Worse than watching paint dry? yes. I'm sure he couldn't care less about opinions like mine as he's celebrating another title.
  22. Jason is clearly better in par terre, and I would agree that Alex's offense on his feet is a bit better, but Jason's defense in neutral is better than Alex's. The way he hipped out of Kindig's deep single was absolutely world class. No doubt that big bro has helped him tremendously.
  23. Micic is tremendous, but following Tsirtsis' accomplishments as a freshman is a lofty goal. On his feet, Micic will be just fine, but his mat wrestling needs to improve for him to beat the best D1 guys. He can get there, for sure, but I don't see him as being quite at Tsirtsis' level at similar points in their development. That's not an insult-Jason was the #1 recruit in the country and just put on an unbelievable display at Nationals. I hope I'm wrong, but it will be incredibly hard to duplicate what JShirts just did.
  24. Mr. Upside can beat anyone if he is on his game. Hope he avoids Beckman, but the sky is the limit for Quiroga. He seems to finally be healthy and is peaking at the right time. I can't wait to see what he does.
