  1. The topic of great coaching comes up all year long, and we certainly have some great coaches here in Indiana.  I thought I'd do a little research to see just how big of an advantage it is to have one of the top coaches in your corner on Friday night.  I used the "Team History" section of IndianaMat, and cross referenced it with the IndianaMat "Coaches" pages for each school.  While some of the data is incomplete, it can give us a pretty good picture of how our top coaches have fared on Friday night, and begin to answer the question of Leroy Vega or Darrick Snyder? Brad Harper or Bob Harmon? Tom Miller or Greg Schaefer? etc.  Also will help us answer how coaches stack up historically.

  2. 4 placers and 3 runner-ups isn't exactly a failure either. I'd say the only one who underperformed was Bam. Poynter lost to the eventual runner-up on Friday and Torres and McIntosh ran into 2 hammers. Cornejo is a top 16 guy but I wouldn't call his loss shocking. Rumph' 4th place finish was an overachievement in most people's eyes. All in all I'd call that a successful tournament run as a team, might even say they were dialed in.

I think you can make excuses for each one of those situations or you can look at it from the perspective of "did they meet their individual goals?"

Poynter was wrestling like a medalist with a win over Triana and a runner-up finish at semi-state and he'd beaten Mejia previously and failed to get a medal.  Cornejo was wrestling like a medalist being the only one all year to not be pinned by Hughes and his runner-up finish at semi-state and he failed to get a medal.  Murillo was facing a guy he had beaten earlier in the year on Friday night and failed to get a medal.  Bam was looking like the champ all year, coming off a runner-up finish at state and didn't get the job done.  Torres was coming off a runner-up finish in the state the year before and looking for a title and didn't get it done.

Rumph had a nice win Friday over Molloy in a match he wasn't favored in.  I'd say he overperformed.

McIntosh had a nice win in the semis over Vaughn to get into the title match.  I'd say he overperformed.

I'd say 2 of 7 left Bankers Life happy.  That's an under-performance in my book and far from "dialed in".

  3. Brayton isn't a lock by virtue of the 5-3 match against McIntosh.

Don't know about an advantage, but Leroy and the rest of the Portage staff had those boys dialed in at state last year.

I don't know how "dialed in" they were at state.  Poynter lost to Mejia Friday night.  Cornejo lost.  Bam Lawrence lost in the finals to a guy he had beaten previously.  Gaige Torres didn't finish what he set out to do, which was win a title.  I'd say Rumph and McIntosh had nice tournaments, but Portage overall had a very disappointing State Finals.

  4. Jones at 182 has a good draw.

Well, he's already lost this season to the Regional 4th placer he has first round and he's already been majored this season by his likely ticket round opponent...

    12/03/2016
    182
Joshua Bohling (LaPorte) over S. Jones (Lafayette Jefferson) (Dec 4-1)

    12/03/2016
    182
Varsity - Tyjonn Lockett (Merrillville) over S. Jones (Lafayette Jefferson) (MD 13-5)
  5. Hello Ladies and Gents,

The Mudflap is back!  It's time for one of my favorite posts of the year.  What is the over/under for Logansport Regional State Qualifiers?

Every year we go up North for the Semi-State and are treated to rude Region fans, hard cross-faces, bad neighborhoods, and a very short Saturday.  We were hoping that the shift in venue from Merrillville to East Chicago would improve our luck, but it seems the Region kids have an even larger advantage from breathing in the poor air quality of the steel mills.  It's almost like training at altitude out in Colorado.  That's the only explanation I can give.

I'll set the Over/Under at 5 Logansport Regional SQ.

(Ryne Webb, Clay Jones, Miles Krintz, Donnie Crider, Kelon Williams)

Let's hear your thoughts.  Who should keep the bus running Saturday at EC?

  6. Ah a fellow pottery fan, once you're gone glazing and firing that ball, you may want to "gaze" into it and modify your pick. I like Lee's chances, but McIntosh from Portage dominated the other young man you mentioned, so if he were to somehow beat Lee, which is doubtful, he'd also have to close a big gap and avenge a loss from the previous week.

Wrong Laughlin sportsfan. Lee and Brad Laughlin of Yorktown on the same side is who we are talking about.
