In IHSAA world, where both seeding and wrestlebacks are evil. I can understand not seeding SS as you have regional 1 vs 4 and so on, but adding wrestlebacks would make it closer to having the best wrestlers advancing, not the luckiest draws.

I like how they match up 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.

But with the pitiful job they do of alligning which schools are in which sectional…. regional… and semi-states.  Wrestle backs are a must to make sure the best kids reach the state finals.

Gibbs versus May is just nuts.

Everyone knows not to talk politics, religion and class wrestling but with every post about how bad tickets are or the collapse of the NC SS. I thought I might change the pace. And for the record I still love Indianas one class wrestling tournament. But after seeing(everyone can name one)some of the first rd SS, round to go, and Friday night matches the last few years send kids home that shouldn’t be. Now watching Flo promote virginia(6 classes!), missouri(4 classes) or even Arkansas! It makes them look like studs when they are wrestling kids that wouldn’t make it out of the sectional in Indiana. But they still pump them up all the same. It makes me wonder, would it benefit Indiana(growth of the sport, athletes getting college looks, etc) to have classes in the wrestling tournament? Do any other states have classes and then an ultimate tourney with all the champs? Might be a way to evolve to something new, grow the sport, but keep the old timers happy with a true champ. Has there been any real discussion about this? Maybe roll it out when they sanction girls wrestling? This is probably been kicked around 100x so interested to hear the general consensus.

Arizona has classes.   Then they try to have a tournament of Champions (privately ran … not through the HS association) but they have had a problem with not all of the champs wanting to participate.   Not even half sometimes…

Speaking of stalemate position… anyone watch the Cast-Phillips match wanna weigh in on their opinion as to how quick a stalemate was called with Cast trying to get to his butt vs how long they waited/didn’t call one when the situation was reversed and Cast got hit for scissoring the head? (Before things go off the rails as they tend to do here, Phillips was the clear winner of the match and this situation had no real effect on the outcome, just looking for opinions)

I thought the Stalemate was a bit quick and I am Ben’s dad.  I think Ben would have still been able to hold that position, but it was quick for sure.

The head scissor was definely there, and I think Ben would have been able to convert that one had it not been BUT… I am a little biased.

I could easily see some frustration on the stalemate calls.

Cast is a stud.  I hate to see any Senior go down who has worked their butt off, but wrestling in Indiana is soooo Brutal and that is why we love it.

Silly question, sorry.  What is considered the ticket round? Also what is blood round?

Blood Round is a common term used to describe the round before guaranteed placement… This wrestling lingo term is used all over the US.

“Ticket Round” is Indiana Wrestling Lingo.  It refer to the second round of semi-state.  In order to qualify for state Indiana you have to win your first two matches to advance to state.  So if you win in the 2nd round of semi-state  “you punch your ticket” and qualify to compete at the state finals.

We’ve got like 10 state placers in our semi state, how does it happen we always end up with two of them wrestling each other in the blood round?

Now you know how we feel in Evansville…. It is just brutal.  The reality is you must come out of regionals a champ to avoid a death draw… but even then you are not guaranteed.

Last Year, we had Colin Knox a regional champ hit Delaney Ruhlman in the ticket round.  I do wish there were some sort of wrestle-backs at SS.

    Regionals

    Bloomington South
    J Conway

    Evansville North
    Hunter May

    Mooresville

    Landon Boe

    Jeffersonville
    Kade Law
    Ben Phillips

Loser of Phillips vs. Law will likely get a rough ticket round match.

Phillips is headed up to 170.

This is typical of Evansville semi-state.  Just a meat grinder….  But the real story is… Look at the quality of wrestlers coming out of Invicta this year… Phillips, Law, Conway and May all have trained there since middle school.  Coach Knable and Coach K are producing some studs.

  7. Dude... Serious mask “Dictators” in here.  Make slip below your nose you’ll get called out.  Quietly minding your own business and you mask is slightly down... hail the Mask patrol to the rescue... I get wearing masks to some degree... but these guys are just stupid about it.

  8. Conway vs  Rust...

this has already been mentioned.  But this is definitely a case that indicates a real need for wrestlebacks of some sort at Semi-State.

I feel like Rust had some tough calls at regionals in the match versus Conley.  Docked a point for hands to the face... no warning... looked incidental... then got nailed for a draping head scissor (with arm in) which from what I understand is legal if there is no pressure.  He cut Conley twice trying to make up the difference with takedowns... So basically Conley won 4-3 without actually scoring points offensively at all. Also Conley should have gotten hit with a stalling point IMO also...to send it to SV.

Rough Calls for Rust and then He gets Conway for the ticket round...

Don’t count him out though... He is gonna give Conway a run for the money for sure.

I was floored when I found out Cheatham was a second year wrestler. Seems to be a great kid and a freak athlete. Diamond in the rough for a college program if he chooses that route. Super high ceiling.

This kid is a stud... unbelievable progress in in just two years.  He trains in the Off Season at Invicta... Ya’ll better be watching out for these guys that are being molded by Isaac Knable.
